You forgot one important thing, Edd is a germ phobe, the head coverings could just be to prevent his head from getting dirty and to protect against things like lice.

That could be.there are several examples where he is scrubbing, washing his hands, or wearing gloves. However this still doesn't explain the strands of hair we see.

Rather than the hat itself being a "comfort object" perhaps the act of wearing something on his head brings him comfort. He is depicted throughout the series as having steriotypical obsessive-compulsive traits (orderliness in his room to the point of labeling everything, etc.) So maybe when his head is uncovered it causes him discomfort, and we the audience misinterpret the other character's reactions to his hat being removed. Just a thought

I mean... I was a nerdy tomboy with two friends who were boys. I guess I just imagined he was a girl because I connected with his awkwardness and thought he was hiding his hair the way I did to pass as a boy when I was younger. A lot of people don't assume he's a girl but in fact assume he's a trans guy.

I wonder if he got so badly injured in dodgeball, that he had to have surgery on his head. He may have gotten bad head damage from hitting it against the wall while playing and passed out. It wouldn't surprise me if he was taken to the hospital with how protective and perfectionist his parents are. Edd may have had to have surgery on his head for an unspecified reason (stapling the skull back together, injecting the brain, simple surgical cuts, tubes inserted, etc.) But surgeries such as this, especially in early childhood, come with both physical and emotional scars. Edd may wear his hat to hide the past from himself, or so people won't misjudge his intellectual level just from a past head wound. An extension on this is all the notes with instructions his parents leave in the house. Perhaps Edd DID have some minor brain damage, and forgot to carry out simple every day tasks. The notes were meant for when he was little to help him learn to be independent. But with his parents' anxiety on whether or not he will forget again is why they keep them up to this day.

Maybe he had hair before but the surgeries is what caused him to lose some hair (which could explain those lines of hair that is peeking out of the hat). It could be a huge scar with stables along with a hairstyle that doesn't match. He probably was put on medication that caused some of his hair falling out or not growing back because of the injury he suffered. Again, this is a theory with somewhat of a good speculation, not just some idea.

Double D mentioned in a episode that he had history with dodgeball and said he was experiencing flashing lights I think? I can’t remember the episode, but when Eddy got closer Double D started to cry hard and even Eddy stopped and questioned why Double D was so scared of dodgeball

I actually had a thought about this, and here's how I came to the brain injury theory: When Double Dee came to the cul-de-sac, Ed (who's his age) is wearing a diaper. That likely means (especially since it's the 90s) he's less than 5. But he was unsupervised (they all were) meaning he's older than 2. I'd put him at about 4(ish) (maaaaybe 5 at a stretch) which means he can't have been in school yet. HOWEVER, the boys never saw the "incident" or else Eddy would have known not to joke (he's a jerk, but even he knew when to stop) So if the dodgeball incident happened, it would be in preschool (I never went and even so I'm from a different country so I'm not certain if gym class happens in preschool) From that I've come to this conclusion: Double Dee was injured in a preschool dodge ball incident. Because of this, he's had to have ongoing treatment. The cost of the treatment would explain why his parents were so absent (work), and the injury would explain his parents - Sticky notes are to help his memory. - His IQ is because of all the hard work they've put in to keep him from falling behind. - Routine, like sticky notes, help with any memory issues. - He's physically weak because they are careful that he doesn't do any sports (actually does anyone ever see him in gym class? I'm not certain) - They're obsessive because they're scared they'll lose him. So that's where my thoughts came from, in short, anyway.

Ronan Shepherd The short version is Edd had a brain injury causing memory loss and difficulty creating new memories. So his parents implemented routine into his daily life to help combat the memory loss.

And what if he has a never-healing wound that could get infected if left unprotected? It'd make sense, seeing how afraid he is about bacteria and filth in general. It could be covered by his hair so Sarah may have not noticed, or it may be too dark inside his hat for her to notice. It may also look cool to Ed, as much as it may look as it hurts (which makes more sense than just being a scar), and it would kind of shock Eddy too the first time he saw it. Also, it fits pretty well the dodgeball theory.

My theory is that there is absolutely no head outline under the hat. Judging by the two times Ed and Eddy saw Double D without his hat, Eddy took on a more shocked reaction while Ed stayed calm given how much horror comics and movies he surrounds himself with. Plus, it'd be another 4th wall break joke that Danny Antonucci loves so much. He's literally making fun of how he never designed Double D without the hat. The guy's a freaking genius.

My theory: Double-D's family are scientists they were experimenting on chemicals and a young curious Edd wanted to help. Then a freak accident led the chemicals to splatter on to Double-Ds head and left some nasty third degree burns. After recovering from the accident, his parents advised him that he keeps a hat on to hide those scars

I think other than double d having a scar that he has like "emo" hair. Most guys I knew had medium length hair wearing beanies like that. I think that he has medium length hair and doesn't cut it shorter because then his scar would be exposed, however, lengthy hair is "a hassle" or "hard to keep up with" since double d is a very clean person. Long hair would be annoying to deal with and would cause him stress to style or take care of so instead he just hides it since he can't cut it.

My theory is that when he he was little he he had gotten a head injury during a game of dodgeball and that it left scars and bald spots around the scared areas and that his parents had gotten him the hat to hide the scars and moved to Peach Creek so that he could have a fresh start where no one would know about his dodgeball accident, but overtime his hair grew long and since he couldn't go to the barber shop to get it cut due to the scars he want's to keep hidden and that his parents probably don't know how to cut hair or simply don't have the time to or maybe cutting it would irritate the scars he just pins it up all up and under his hat and used the hair pins to pin his hat to his hair to insure that it will stay put.

@@JackBarrBaxter That's interesting! I'm sure that is definitely a factor as well. My understanding is that it has most to do with brain size VS. body size. For instance, humans have a brain 4x bigger than expected for an animal of our size. Elephants are smart and have large brains, but their brain is in size with their bodies.

Double D showed many symptoms of having OCD within the show. Having an obsessive preference of something covering ones head could be related to his constant need for organization and cleanliness. The shows characters had thorough character foundations and structure.

Kids can be cruel, so *IF* double D DID have scaring on his head, it's possible that he had, at some point, experienced some extreme bullying because of his scar (s) and took up to wearing a hat as a result.

Fun fact: That's actually a Game of Thrones hat that I turned around. Had to do something to celebrate the premiere this week even if was the only one who knew at the time :) Honestly, I don't know how Double D does it, it was like at least 30 degrees too hot for me to be wearing a hat like that and he does it ALL THE TIME Hope you all enjoyed this week's episode!

Pastel It could be very different, thus warranting a 'cool' comment from the dimwitted Ed. And it could have his hair seeming like it is being pulled or tugged on resulting in him asking if it hurts. Not the best explanation, but it gives the theory a bit more logic. @@Wheezy_beezy This one is actually even easier and practically a non-issue thanks to the episode "Momma's Little Ed" showing Edd's devotion to his parents. Ed and Eddy forge sticky notes that Edd's parents use to list his chores around the house, and NONE of them are things Edd would ever even THINK OF, let alone do of his own free will... and he does them with little complaint. So the thought that his mother would have him do his hair every day would be an easy assumption for this theory.

@Julianna Coskey So in the Jewish religion, all Jewish people are supposed to cover the top of their heads at all times. It's a sign of devotion. Only really old school Jewish families cover their heads at all times tho, mostly they only wear head coverings at religious festivals and the like

Furthermore, from what we see in the series, it seems fairly clear that despite being _very_ busy and often being out of the house or even _out of town,_ Double D's parents love him _very_ much and he himself is 100% aware of and convinced of that fact. If he needs a comfort object for any reason, it's _not_ as a substitute or a supplement for parental affection.

The issue with debunking aspects of this theory is that the artists and creators of the show probably weren't constantly thinking about the logic of whatever is under Double D's hat. The show was never serial, it included lots of slapstick and fantasy phsyics (like when they built that elevator to the Moon out of old boxes and junk), and there could have been multiple discussions among the artists as to what was actually under there. They probably never decided enough to animate the continuous logic of what is under it. For example...when Sarah climbs out from under his hat, they weren't thinking about what she may have seen under it..only how funny the gag was. That's the main issue with theories of shows without continuity. The logic of their world is always different.

well said. that is the problem with a lot of theories on cartoons and animated shows and movies. i like hearing them but everyone uses this realities logic rather than the shows reality logic. i also don't understand why people think hair and eye color count with animation. like drawing and models birthed each other rather than being made by artists.

That is very plausible and as an artist myself I agree as I have experienced this, I have multiple original characters that I draw constantly and 1 of them was designed with a beanie on his head and I always draw him with a hat on, there’s no real reason aside from the fact that it is an integral part of his character and it is out of place thinking of him without his beanie. I’ve even put different hats on him but just never drew him with the top of his head exposed. I tried drawing him without the hat once and even after 2 hours of trying to draw the top of his head nothing seemed right until i eventually gave up and just drew the beanie back on his head

I think the dodgeball incident is completely unrelated to why Double -D wears a hat. I think it’s likely that Double-D was born with some deformity on his head, got surgery when he was an infant/before he moved to the cul-de-sac and wears a hat to hide the surgery scars. He still has enough hair to use hair pins to pin his hat to his head.

The show actually slipped in the clue in the episode Run Ed Run where the Eds are using Edd's hat to fly which reveals a yellow ball or something which makes me fully believe the dodgeball theory. I thought it couldn't be that obvious at first but they actually show whats under his hat which they never do anywhere else in the show which makes this the most reasonable answer

I don't think it was a dodgeball incident, but I do think he has scars, but it could be at birth, or soon after birth due to a bacteria such as Malaria. He does mention in an episode... "Do you realize you left my house unprotected from winged insects..." - something around those lines. As far as his fear of dodgeball, it could be DD being extra, he does exaggerate... a lot of kids don't like dodgeball anyways, Jimmy is scared too...

A fun kernel of info, answering the theory: If you're an Ed, Edd n Eddy nerd, you probably heard of the unproduced scene in the Big Picture Show. It was a campfire scene where we would actually know the backstory to Ed and Edd. Ed's backstory is fine and all, but we're gonna focus on Edd's backstory. According to the crew, Edd used to be in a school where they permanently injured Edd during a dodgeball session, thus leading to Edd actually constructing a machine that would function like the Ultra Machine from pre-videogame developer Nintendo, except with dodgeballs. However, seeing the disaster that his machine made, he was so internally scarred that he moved to Peach Creek. There we go, that officially answers the theory. As for why the campfire scene was cut, the team had already spent their budget in the scenes earlier, which is why the scene never made it to the final movie.

That's hilarious. I have a scar on the top of my head from playing dodge ball. I went under a metal table to grab a ball in the 5th grade and when I came back out I hit my head on the corner and sliced the top of my head. Lots of blood. It's not noticeable and I forgot about it until last summer when I shaved my head.
