Well belonging to this topic I can tell a little story that seemed to me marginal but in retroperspective tells a lot. I worked in 2006 for about two years in a social organisation called kolping work. In that organisation mostly unemployed teenagers temporarily found work. In that time I was there too as an adult working and guiding them and the most teenagers were so called russian-germans. And I have seen a bigger group of them and one guy mostly silent and always a little bit in distance of the big group. One day I asked one of teenagers of the bigger group why there is a problem or what is the problem and they anwered me well "he belongs to us ... well he is ukrainian, but somehow he belongs to us". I always thought what a strange answer it was, but since 2014 upwards I understood more and more what or better to say who was or had the real problem. So to me the relationship between russians and ukrainians is almost for a long time not better and now even worse then between turks and kurds except individual relationships.

Right now tensions between Russian and Ukrainian people are high, but before 2014 I think a lot of Ukrainians had Russian friends and vice versa. The last thing the Russian government wants is for Russian citizens to see their friends and family in other post soviet countries doing not just well but better than the Russian government is willing to do for Russian citizens. Plain and simple.

I am sure it will probably take several generations of Ukrainians to at least partially forget and forgive the Russians for the atrocities they committed over hundreds of years, especially during the brutal Putin’s invasions. “Why do you care”…. Control, insecurity, ego, collective mental illness. This reminds me of my estranged husband. I left 3 years ago, didn’t take him to court because we get along mostly still and speak on respectful terms , made child support optional, He sees our son whenever he has time, didn’t ask for alimony, didn’t ask for his stuff. When I ask him to make it official he says “I don’t want to leave and I don’t want to be left.” He said this while he was engaged to his coworker, while still married to me. That ended without a wedding… Control, ego, insecurity can make one do some strange illogical things. He is one of the brightest capable people I have met, yet strangely illogical. Collective control, ego and insecurity is hard for a husband like Russia and China from Mrs. Ukraine and Mrs. Taiwan.

seeing how many invasions into Russia dating back over the past 3 centuries involved campaigns through either Ukraine or Belarus, not to mention the borders of both countries being fairly close to Moscow, ignoring these regions would be a great strategic blunder. Even if an outright occupation is untenable, having a hostile state on their doorstep is unacceptable much like how China having North Korea acting as a buffer against the South and the United States is preferable to a hostile state not too far away from Beijing geographically, further reinforced by the fact that Korea was the springboard from which the Japanese invasion into China was launched.

Hello Konstantin . A happy new year from Manchester in the UK . I follow your channel since before the war . First I have to say , you now have become a very good broadcaster. Always the numbers and facts by hand to give your arguments strength. You have become the Russian version of Our broadcaster James O‘Brien . Always speaking truth to power . You both in a podcast would be a sensation . As a German , I see a hell lot of similarities between the Hitler Regime and the Putin Regime . They have definitely studied Goebbels style of propaganda very well . And many people run in the trap . Not only the Allies , also the most Germans believed that the Wehrmacht was highly motorised . The Wehrmacht used in WW 2 much more horses then in WW 1 . Because you only ever saw motorised German soldiers . The same similar is the corruption in the high ranks . And very similar , in 1944 not long before the end of the war , Germany produced the biggest numbers of military equipment of all kinds . All the city’s bombed , but all resources was put into the war economy till it imploded . I see in Russian the same happen . They are now on their highest military production level since decades and will run out of workers and material after some more month . Let me finish with my best wishes for the new year to you , your family and the breakfast people .

In the 2019 Ukrainian election, Moscow Kremlin did actively back Zelensky-a native monolingual Russian who rose to fame performing comedy in Russian language on Russian state television-to defeat more nationalistic president Poroshenko. Zelensky ran on a platform of rapprochement with Russia. Early on, Zelensky was in fact soft on Russia and tried to make concessions to Moscow over Donbas with the Minsk Agreements. This led to a popular uprising of Ukrainians in the streets protesting against Zelensky in Oct 2019, dubbed the _“No to capitulation!”_ «Ні капітуляції!» (Ni kapituliatsii!) protests to get Zelensky to back down from what was seen as capitulating to Russia only 5 months after becoming president. There was also an episode where Zelensky, seeking to appease Russia in negotiations, personally traveled to the front lines in Donbas to try to order Azov Reg’t troops to retreat from their positions and withdraw-however he was laughed at by the Ukrainian soldiers who were not willing to surrender the land they had fought so hard to hold on to since 2014. Zelensky was even playing down the threat of full-scale Russian invasion that U.S. intel was warning about for weeks right up til the invasion actually happened in Feb 2022. The current Kremlin propaganda line that Zelensky is some kind of Russophobic Nazi ultranationalist warmonger and Western puppet who was installed by Washington, is utterly ludicrous.

Imo it is about empire and "sphere of interest". Ukraine voted by 92% to be a sovereign nation, choose its own destiny. Russian speakers were not banned from speaking Russian, just Ukrainian was the official national language as its national identity. Ukrainians chose to look to Europe and democracy. The Maiden Revolution was sparked by Putin, not the US, when Putin interfered in Ukraine's internal affairs by trying to block the move to closer ties with the EU, instead wanting Ukraine to join the Eurasian Economic Union. It is nothing to do with "nazi" everything to do with a neighbouring country wishing to pursue its own future, having experienced a past of Russian oppression and subjugation.

I often wonder how prosperous and powerful a country like Russia could be. With the massive amounts of natural resources, a large population and technologically capable Russia could be on par or in front of many powerhouse economies. If only Russian people could see that their political system is not designed for them but for conquest and control of other countries in order to project power to the world and their people. A very archaic idea and definitely one long forgotten by most of the world. I say to Russia, get your own house in order before criticising or interfering in anyone else's house.

Russia is extremely wealthy and prosperous - for the oligarchs and their families who own everything. They have every bit as much money as any Western billionaire and live accordingly. No matter how rich Russia becomes the people will always be poor, suffer, and barely have enough food to eat. The Russian ruling class subsidizes food to keep the common people fed so they don't rebel but otherwise they don't care about normal people.

Well that was an impressive report and discussion. I totally agree with your statements but usually connect the attitude old soviet collectivism, not so much the statehood but the pride of being one of only two superpowers. It clear that Putin and his government are still living in the soviet mindset and thinking that east europeans states are still under Russian control or at least influence. From a psychological viewpoint it is as simple as the old patriarchal husband that never could accepts that the wife divorced him. 2014 Maidan was a shock against Putins governments mindset and prompted actions to try to preserve as much of the mindset as possible - but even more shockingly, Ukraine fought back. After that it has been a long preparation to try to take over Ukraine by any means. I remember when Putin during the talks about Minsk agreement stated that he, if he wanted to, could take Ukraine in 2 weeks. This is why it's easy to see a pathway for Putins actions. If he managed to take Ukraine he would start planning to take the next former soviet country in order to restore and protect this mindset. If Russia wants to change I think Russia needs to wait until the older generation will stop confirming these essentially stupid ideas that preserves a false idea of the right to be guardians of the former satellite states. Perhaps send a therapist to the government to help them deal with the divorce. After all it was 30 years ago.

I probably haven't gotten to the part yet where you say that in the past Russia tried to get rid of the Ukrainian language. Right? I think that happened. It sounds like something Russia would do. I just had supper. My brain wants to go to sleep. Of course those of us here in The Evil West can celebrate any holiday we want to. Christmas, Passover, Ramadan, Diwali (I didn't hear about that until maybe 8 or 10 years ago), Kwanzaa (is that new or ancient? I never looked it up.) Personally I like the Last Great Day - the day at the end of or after the Feast of Tabernacles ( or feast of booths or Sukkot). It gives me hope for the future. The lion laying down with the lamb and all of that peaceful stuff. That's my favorite religious holiday. And I also like Thanksgiving. By the way, I'm Christian, not Jewish. (I don't celebrate Purim, but let's hear it for Queen Esther, anyway! Good job!)

Konstantin, I have always thought that putin had it in for Zelensky because when Zelensky was doing comedy, he had made fun of putin, and it is very obvious that putin doesn't like to be mocked or challenged in any way shape or from. As a result, (putin we will call him "putler" from now on) "putler" felt he had bigger balls than Zelensky and could take Ukraine easily, because putin never really saw Zelensky as anything more than a (hated) comedian. It's GREAT to see President Zelensky continue to stand up to "putler" when no one else seems to want to. God Bless President Zelensky and the Ukraine people!!

Why should Ukraine loose this war from Russia? Russia lost the war they created in Afghanistan, the much larger Americans army lost the war from a much smaller Vietnam. With the support of the west and sanctions in place ,they can win and create a much safer Europe and World. After 3 year this world largest army has only occupied 18% of this much smaller country..

I think the problem is mainly that a lot of older people in Russia still believe that the Soviet Union never fell apart. Putin has crowned himself the leader who will raise the Soviet Union from the ashes. A nice twist if you look at older videos from the turn of the millennium when he promoted more Western politics. The Russian idea of diplomacy has always been in the spirit that if things don't go well, they will go badly with the help of the army. This is a generational problem and it will take a long time before the Russians recover from this utopia, if ever.

It’s such an obvious “tell” that even Stevie Wonder in a Texas Hold ‘‘em Poker Game, would see it. They have no right to complain now!
