@janb3625
@janb3625 День назад
@@tedteddington6223 Clearly we're talking about dictating things at gunpoint, not about dictating things in general. Every country can try to dictate policies, that's not the problem here. For example, when Poland exited USSR, the west dictated a switch to open market, and Poland agreed. To this day we debate in Poland if the switch could be done better. But there wasn't a military threat from the West, we just wouldn't get some of the incentives. Nobody had a problem with this. Also, maybe you are not aware of the local sentiment that is the basis of the comment. The sentiment is, Russia has been hurting eastern europe for decades. Almost every person in eastern europe has a family member in last 2 generations who died due to Russia. When someone here says "Russia has no right to dictate us anything", we mean it in this particular context.

May I respectfully point out to the ambassador, who is surely far more knowledgeable on this topic than I am, that NATO didn't strongarm any of the former Soviet Republics or Soviet satellites into joining. They asked to join for safety because of their experiences with the USSR. Also, Finland and Sweden would still be neutral and outside NATO if Putin hadn't invaded Ukraine.

The Russian apologist fails to recognize several key points, including 1) if Russia is so worried about NATO, then why have they emptied their military bases along the NATO border? They've moved all their kit to Ukraine . They clearly know that NATO will never invade Russia unless Russia attacks them first. 2) Surrendering to Putler will NOT result in peace, but instead will allow Putler to recover and then continue the war on some lame pretext like he did in February 2022.

I think it’s a little more nuanced, the Russians appear to fear Ukraine joining NATO but not say Finland. So there is another conversation going on inside Moscow other than the direct threat of NATO. So NATO didn’t provoke this, this is purely a Russian projection. They fear a democratic Ukraine doing well inside the western “umbrella”.

Chamberlain declared war in 1939 and he died in 1940,with hindsight I feel he acted responsibly for the British and the title of "appeaser" given to Chamberlain is not really justified as Britain was not ready for war in 1938.

If you go look up NATO / Ukraine relations, they had intentions to join all the way back to the early days of Ukraine's independence from the USSR. In December 2013, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland, was in Ukraine speaking with your US Ambassador. It was caught on audio and posted on you tube. It was reported by Reuters in February 2014. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A conversation between a State Department official and the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine that was posted on RU-vid revealed an embarrassing exchange on U.S. strategy for a political transition in that country, including a crude American swipe at the European Union. The leaked conversation appeared certain to embarrass the United States and seemed designed to bolster charges - from Russia, among others - that the Ukrainian opposition is being manipulated by Washington, which President Barack Obama's administration strenuously disputes. A senior Kremlin aide accused the United States of arming Ukrainian "rebels" and warned Russia could intervene to maintain the security of its neighbor. Make of it what you will.

@@ChristineRead-ck1uq I heard the conversation. It consisted of foreign (US) diplomats in Ukraine speculating on who they'd like to see gain office in Ukraine during a period in which the Russian-backed president, Viktor Yanukovych, was being removed from office by the Ukrainian parliament for ordering the police to shoot demonstrators. Foreign diplomats talk about politics in the country to which they are posted all the time. I am sure that there are 1000s of conversations among foreign diplomats about whether they would like to see Biden or Trump win in November 2024 and what the outcome would mean for their country. The former UK ambassador fails to recognize that the then Soviet leadership, the Politburo, GRU, KGB and etc, clearly understood that NATO was never a threat. As a point to the ambassador, yes Russians in the countryside who are poor back Putin because they are kept poor and largely ignorant of the real world. I know of Russians in the UK who dare not tell those people the truth because if they repeated it inside Russia they could be at serious risk. People in, for example, Moscow or St Petersburg know more, are better travelled, and support Putin much more superficially in the main.

I listened to an interview with Stephen Kotkin and he said something that really stuck with me. "Putin is expressing "great concern" about the human rights of russians abroad. He is not the least concerned about the human rights of russians inside of Russia." It's the height of hypocrisy. It's just another excuse to expand.

He doesn't need to be concerned about Russians in Russia, because they are happy and have better lives than people in the UK and USA. In the west out governments hate us, tax us so much, then hate us some more

Ruzzia knows that it would be impossible to invade Ukraine once it joined NATO, that's what it was important for Ruzzia that Ukraine stays out of Nato and a possible country to invade in the future.

The former ambassador may well be right that Russians were outraged at the idea. And? Simply giving the kremlin cover for their acts is irresponsible given that Ukraine is NOT THEIR PROPERTY.

The people who live on that territory should be able to decide what they want and I'm certain it wouldn't be a continuation of this war.. The Ukraine conflict is as much about civil war as a struggle between the Kremlin and Kiev and its Western allies, a fact that seems totally forgotten from any media reports..

Countries are begging to join NATO, NATO doesn't force anyone. In fact it is rather difficult to join NATO so the the whole schtick about NATO expansion is complete BS.
