What's going on with Ferrari?

Ferrari had a slow start to the 2023 F1 season but the inconsistent and poor form seems to be following the team throughout the season. Ferrari currently sit 4th in the constructors standings behind Aston Martin, Mercedes, and leaders Red Bull. With McLaren's upgrades giving the team a massive boost in recent weeks, could we see Ferrari drop further down the order? Why is Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz so frustrated? And what is it going to take for this team to be consistently at the front of the F1 grid? Enjoy.

When xavi told Leclerc "Good job, that's P7", that's when I lost all hope. Even leclerc was so frustrated on getting just a P7 but being told that finishing at P7 is "good job", that's a new low.

The Spaniards at ferrari are the reason why they suck. Xavi Padros and strategist Inaki Rueda make Manuel from Fawlty Towers look like employee of the month. They should've been given the boot the moment Vasseur entered Maranello for the first time.

Vasseur was the first team principal promoted outside of the house since Jean Todt and to me that summarises Ferrari's problem. They recruit lot of their staff locally from Italy and promote them in-house, which is good in a sense, but it tends to create insular culture that makes it difficult to acknowledge mistakes and shortcomings. They need to bring in more new blood who can set benchmark for how things are done in other teams. And not just at the top level of designers or engineers, but also on operations side. Ferrari did have a competitive car last year and I'm sure they can design one again, but it's the operational side and race management where they keep falling short the most.

Ferrari really blew it last year, that was their best chance for a title this decade. Lets not forget; their 2 rivals Mercedes and RB were fighting the 2021 title until the last race - while they began developing their car half way through the year for the new regs..... For me since I been watching F1 since the 90s, Ferrari are reverting back to the Ferrari pre-schumacher-brawn-todt. They gonna go through some barren years. And Leclerc reminds me alot of Alesi :(

Two things, their inconsistency and poor race execution can’t give the crew any confidence going into the next one. We all know what it’s like to focus 110% at not making mistakes the second time, but we lose focus on the bigger picture and end up making a bigger mess. Secondly, I fear it could be an Italian culture thing, or they rest on their laurels a bit too much sometimes. I don’t the car is a mile off, them, Merc and Aston have been trading 2nd fastest car many times this year. I pray for the next race at Spa, they can put together a good weekend, which will give them a confidence boost going into the summer break, then keep it up for the rest of the year. Leclerc’s contract expires next year and all the love for Ferrari in the world, will likely not be stronger than the urge to get into more promising machinery. They are lucky Leclerc loves the team and the brand as much as he does.

Personally, I'm not that disappointed in Ferrari this year as I was in other bad years such as 2020, 2019, 2016 or 2014. And the reason why is that I see this as a rebuilding year for the Scuderia, as Fred Vasseur just arrived and is making lots of changes in order to build back Ferrari to where they should be, hopefully for next year but if not possible, for 2025 at the latest. Of course there are plenty of things that are still awful, such as the strategy team or Leclerc's luck and reliability this year; but they have what in my opinion is the best driver lineup on the grid (up there with Mercedes'), and even with the salary cap being in place they still have one of the biggest budgets and some of the best infrastructure in Formula One. In the first opening stint, Carlos was quicker and had a huge tyre advantage, yet Ferrari didn't swap them around. After the first pitstop, Leclerc got a bit unlucky and ended up losing almost 7 seconds worth track time which he soon made up because he was faster than Carlos. Yet, Ferrari insisted on keeping Sainz ahead. After the second stint in the third one, Leclerc and Sainz had to move together using DRS and tyre management so that they don't get swallowed up by George but Ferrari being Ferrari, let them fight it out and Carlos ended up wasting tyres and losing position to George since he didn't have the backing of Leclerc's DRS and Leclerc tried fighting the 5 second penalty alone by blitzing a gap to Carlos in the early stages and using up all the tyres only to lose position to George after the penalty. The lack of strategic communication between the drivers and the team is visible more than ever and its getting to the point where since sometimes the drivers' pace is evenly matched, they always tell them to hold position when they should make the call to secure the place. Every single time this season when they've told either Carlos or Charles to stay behind the other, they fuck up the second driver and make sure to interfere with the first driver's smooth running as well. Carlos should not be the one making the call that if Checo is about to pass, he would pit. That is the strategist's job and the driver spending time even thinking about these strategies loses his concentration bit by bit. That is the literal reason why a strategist exists, so that they can reduce the load on the drivers. Leclerc really had to tell the team "Lets stay calm", bruh that's something that they have to be. Its normally the drivers who get excited and agitated because of the adrenaline and the team tells them to stay calm. Here, its the other way around. We have seen multiple instances of Xavi dropping the ball and not informing Leclerc when to push and even Sainz telling his engineer to give him the information 'quickly' because they don't have time to fuck around, and the team just fails to realise that. Its a core problem which just a few surface-level personnel changes won't fix. Ferrari is the biggest graveyard of this decade, with millions of hopes and dreams going to die here.

Carlos was quicker for two laps… he wasted his tires keeping with Leclerc shown by his want to pit really early, saying Ferrari didn’t swap is stupid, leclerc was also faster then in the 2nd stint but Ferrari didn’t do anything,

I have been a Ferrari fan my entire life because of my dad. My dad first took me to the F1 race in long beach...like.. 198..3? Maybe 84? It depresses me to see my #2 Driver (Peres is my #1), Leclerc struggle so much! He should be a world champion by now. I blame the team, the toxicity, the terrible race tactics and shit choices the team makes when it counts. Not to mention the car (I own a Ferrari), can be a nightmare to deal with. Come on SF! get it together!

Whenever I think of the situation at Ferrari it is hard to not put some blame on the drivers. Ferrari is a pretty big seat to fill, much like the second seat at RB. I think many drivers let this pressure get to them, maybe not every weekend but many weekends. I like Leclerc and want to see him do well, but he can't seem to get the most out of the car every weekend. I always wonder what Ferrari's results would look like if Verstappen or Hamilton were driving for them.

I wouldn't say I'm a Ferrari fan, but last year was fun wondering if Charles or Carlos would be bringing the fight to red bull and there was an early chance for Charles until things unraveled. Max is a machine and very impressive, but it'd be nice of the top teams were all fighting back and forth and swapping top 10 positions (McClaren, Ferrari, Merc, Red Bull, AstonMartin). With McClaren's updates it seems both Alonso's and Ferrari's hopes for the seasons are dashed.

I don't think Ferrari are capable of understanding and fixing the issues of their cars. It's been a long time since we saw them becoming faster during the season. In 2017 and 2018, most wins were in the first half of the season. Yeah, in 2019, they won everything they did after the summer break, but I think that was due to the engine, not improving the overall car itself. In 2022, it was the same as 2017 and 2018. Even last year, I was sure we would drop behind RB during the season. It seems like what is the speed of the car at the start of the season, that will be the speed during the whole year.

Not just the team its the mentality that needs to change. What made Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher winners because of their mentality and their thirst to be at the top. They constantly stayed back and worked on the car alongside engineers there was no time to rest. Guess what after silverstone, charles leclerc goes and watches wimbledon!! Thats the problem they dont bother looking whats wrong with the car. Leclerc is a great driver but his mentality needs to change.

This is how I see it as well. This season should be used to learn from it and do better next year. It sucks majorly but I also don't think the drivers are the problem. I also believe due to the issues with the car, we have these weird strategies (or lack of) to be honest. It's also interesting to compare to AM; they were great at the beginning of the season and have now fallen off a bit. Btw a really level-headed analysis from a Ferrari fan. I really like that you don't shit on the drivers.

From what I've heard, Binotto tried changing too many things at once, so they didn't know what was working and what wasn't. Also, it seems that they don't have a good strategy team--maybe they switch the strategy team up every couple of races. So, instead of letting a set team learning from their mistakes, they get new people who go through the same mistakes as their predecessors.

Okay but you didn't really say anything. The floor, the engine, suspension, side pods, etc? You said nothing substantial. They have downforce, thus the tire dag, their rear end hooks up on exits, there is some instability for sure at high and medium speed. The package is not working and they're chewing tires. Drivers, not the best, not consistent. Remember the Haas is eating tires as well sharing many of the same parts.

Last season's inconsistency, durability issues, and miscommunication etc etc caused a rot that is still in the woodwork which isn't going to be treatable for some time. An issue for me is Ferrari's inability to recruit the top staff talent and being the only teams not to be based in the UK, is a disadvantage right now - an engineer for example having to up sticks with a family etc to a different country where English isn't the first language must play a role? Carlos seems more openly disgruntled with decision-making and strategies compared to last season in my opinion, and Charles just doesn't seem the same guy pre French GP 2022, where it was the beginning of the end for me. I'd love to see Ferrari truly compete on a consistent basis and take it to Red Bull, a great Ferrari team is good for F1 but drastic changes have to be made within the organisation.
@thebeardedgingerontheinter3256
If leclerc stays at Ferrari it will be a what could have been story for him. I find it pretty ridiculous that Mercedes even with a terrible car still out point them. And McLaren can pretty much go from the 8th fastest car to the 2nd fastest. There team has to many issues from pit stops to strategy and even just communication with the driver.

In my opinion, Ferrari need a real force of personality that can push through their self-importance and ego as a team to reshape them. Because it's happened before, twice in fact, when the team seemed to be trailing. Niki Lauda joined Ferrari after they came 6th in the Constructors and was willing to tell Enzo Ferrari, to his face, "The car is shit". With a lot of feedback from Lauda, Ferrari narrowly missed the 74 championship with Reggazzoni and then in 75, Lauda and Ferrari were on top of the world. The next of course was Schumacher who not only had the influence to develop the team, he knew the people he wanted. If I'm not mistaken, he wanted Ross Brawn at Ferrari after they worked together at Benneton. I like Carlos and Charles, but neither of them have that level of influence. I think Carlos is trying, with him effectively dictating his own strategy every race but I don't think he has the same development influence. And to be frank, at this stage I'm willing to say Charles is a great driver, but I don't think he's a good team leader.

That's what I'm thinking as well. Those Italian Knuckeheads need someone aggressive and strong to swoop in there and throw them off their mentality. Charles and Carlos just aren't the people for that job. Sebastian Vettel wasn't strong enough, you could quickly see the resignation setting in. Only Drivers with absolute Belief like Schumacher or Lauda were actually capable of that.

Driver management is also an issue. How many times have we seen situations where the driver behind is quicker but they are told not to attack. I honestly believe in a top and consistent car, Leclerc and Sainz are just fine. But we aren’t in a top car and should forget about driver management and just focus on the results. In Hungary, Sainz should have been let by as soon as possible to take advantage of the softs and give Hamilton a headache.

I think the problem with the team is that they are spoiled by choice, they can get just aboout any driver, can study any which way of airflow, and can always afford to pay for mistakes on track that cause damages however, now that they had to scale down, due to cost cap, they're like okay well were do we NEED to focus on as opposed to WANT, and that indecision is what is leading them to this, because they probably did R&D other aero designs and they're like well the times are similiars so let's go with this one, I assume the upgrades in Barca was just like "well what if we try this" and it was basically more of the same so it's like "well which one of these works best then? " its always easier to scale up than down

It's the team mentality. Schumacher brought his team with him and hadn't left the garage until they did exactly as he wanted the car to be, and there was a success. When he left, I might be wrong, Ferrari fired some of the people who were crucial in that winning era and hadn't done anything significant since. They don't consider their driver's input and opinions, they just have that weird "we are Ferrari and we are above it all - everyone loves us" mentality, and they are not seeing that times have changed. Drivers are more involved in strategies than ever, and their input is respected in other teams, but not here. It's not enough to change a few people or drivers, it's that philosophy that needs to be changed.

I think by now Ferrari has become synonymous for 'bad strategy calls'. But one thing that I think we should analyze on a bit broader scale is the Ferrari power unit. All teams using Ferrari this season are a dissappointment, especially in race trim. Maybe it's power distribution, but for some reason Ferrari, Haas and Alfa Romeo all cannot maintain whatever decent results they show during qualy. The drop-off is huge. Another issue is language: most people there are from Mediterranean countries communicating largely in Italian. But in public they are required to speak English which I find a little disciminating against the two Italy-based teams and Alfa Romeo which is a German-Swiss-Italian co-op. Let people communicate n their own language if that increases the chance for better performance and better results. Third and final: Charles Leclerc. Despite him having flashes of absolute speed, as a personality he does not come across as a team leader; not the sort of person (or driver) one wants to build a team around. I feel Carlos Sainz does have that personality and his strengths are in consistency and overview, rather than instant raw speed. But Ferrari as a team are more like Leclerc because it has been built around Leclerc: occasional class, but mostly unpredictable, dodgy, irregular, inconsistent, uncertain, a bit flingy.
