Hi Philip, great video! Mavic 3 pro has been out for a month now and now sharpness or noise controls... Do you have any update from DJI as to when/if we'll ever get it on the Mavic 3 pro?
But DJI can’t tell me that I have to sell my Air 2S for 600 Euro and buy a Mavic 3 for 2k because they are not able to fix the max speed via firmware update.

Thank goodness you do still upload proper professional videos, so sick of seeing 'shorts' and tiktok videos being advertised. Philip, waking up to find you have released a new video is like discovering your favorite TV show just dropped a new season unexpectedly. It's such a joy to go with you on the journey as you discover all the nuance and detail that you do. As a new Mavic owner you've given me much food for thought with this video and your previous two, and also opened my eyes to what this tool is capable of. Thank you for your efforts, it continually inspires me.
Of all the creative content I've watched on RU-vid... yes, all of it (and I've watched probably an unhealthy amount), I find myself entirely mesmerised with the artistic creativity and mind-blowing knowledge you have and share. It's almost like, through your videography skills combined with your style and pace of delivery, you are able to unveil multiple perspectives of our natural surroundings that, for me at least, have become visually hidden in my perceptions of the environment around me. I don't know if it's just me, but I find myself sitting quietly for 5 minutes or so afterwards to allow my mind to process everything I've just watched and heard. So, this time, instead, I thought I'd mention it here.
Phillip; I will be a brand new subscriber of your channel starting today. This review was, BY FAR, the most comprehensive, intuitive, relentless and genuine video I've ever seen regarding these tools of creativity. Many channels miss this, with flashy videos and intros and sponsorship deals negatively impacting their audience and, in my opinion, considering them dumb. We are creatives, we need tools and our tools need to work. This video is the perfect example of knowing and supporting your audience. Thank you Phillip- and cheers. I wish DJI pursued more firmware updates for their older models.
I once used tripod mode, and got comfortable pushing the sticks all the way forward/backward knowing that the software would prevent things from going too fast. Then the software glitched...and my little Mavic Air launched at me like a demon from hell. Since I was flying it toward me, infront of a client, indoors, no one noticed the blood as I grabbed the air before it hit anyone. Always good to have my little towel with me to wipe away sweat. Sometimes blood too.
Philip, I didn't know about you or your channel until I started searching for the reason they sped up the OG Tripod mode and renamed it "Cine" mode. Thank you for what you did to put this into motion. We all owe you a big "thank you," for your persistence.
I used to think the Tripod mode was useless until I educated myself. I found that I really miss it on the Mini 3 Pro, particularly because Cine mode is still very fast when flying low and close. I purchased the cinesticks from Scotty makes stuff and now I’m able to get better slow shots. Downside is having to carry an extra box and being careful not to lose the parts.

Without people like you providing professional feedback these companies would be continually putting out products that don't cater to their customers which always leaves a bad taste in your mouth, especially in an industry where our tools aren't cheap. My solution for slow flying on the Mini 3 Pro is no sticks on the N1 controller and domed nuts on the RC controller threads. Makes it much, much easier to hold a set control input.
I love the image on the Mini 3 Pro since the last update. -2/-2 all the way. It just shows that the default settings where creating problems where there where none. I mean the images is very detailed without the added sharpening but it's so much more pleasant. It's also very clean without the noise reduction. It seem the NR was not only removing genuine detail from image but also adding some trance digital noise on top. Now I find that the image quality especially when shooting in 50/60p matches my regular camera so much more. It definitely looks like something that cost a lot more than what we paid for it.
I spent sooooo long explaining the issues to them before and after my initial review because it was a mess. I don’t know if any of that helped but I am shocked they brought it in. I think they are genuinely concerned the average user will freak without lots of sharpness and noise reduction.
@@philipbloom I would understand if they'd freak out by giving an option that makes image worst but easier for editing. Thing is as you well know the image is now incomparably better in every way without doing absolutely anything to it :D The strangest thing is that soon after they added the same thing to Avata and it made putting a GoPro on it completely redundant :D

What a bittersweet bit of news. I’ve been watching this saga unfold since I got a Mini 3 Pro in June of last year and signed the petition (I believe). So, yay, they’re listening, and adding the ability to fly really slow on the drone I own (but not others?) someday (maybe?) and they’re totally gonna fix that spotlight issue (right???) Oh, DJI - the amazing company that brings us incredibly intuitive counterintuitive tools that are simple yet frustrating to update with firmware that might make our drones way better or completely unusable. I had to do the same thing with them to get offline maps back. 7 months after the promise and a year and a half after I started my monthly campaign it finally came last year. Unfortunately it's not as good as it used to be on the Mavic Pro. But I'll take it. Lol

Thank you Phillip! DJI has some overall appealing products that I would otherwise probably buy and use, but flaws like their insistence on over sharpening make them unappealing to me. I am genuinely amazed that they have added the ability to turn down sharpening and noise reduction. I very much agree that they should bring both image control and slow flight control to their most recent models and then I’m likely to buy and use one.
I had no idea that the speed could be set, so I am really happy that I clicked on this video...what a cool function. I now I will be using that on my Mavic 3 Classic for sure.
Also loving the image of the Mini 3 Pro after the late October 2022 update. With sharpening and NR set to -2/-2 the image has way more detail, way less noise, way more shadow information and also looks much smoother. I can also boost the ISO over 400 without the image falling apart entirely, even 1600 look super clean. The Mavic 3 cannot even compete anymore.
If you have to boos iso to 400 you might as well switch to 50/60 fps set iso to auto and adjust the ev compensation until you hit 500 it just above. Then you'll be in the second iso and you can just lock exposure to get cleaner image.
Congratulations for your adopted cats. They deserve a better life that only caring people can give them and congratulations for your videos, always interesting to watch even being a little longer than average RU-vid videos. I seriously thought I was going crazy when I thought spotlight mode was getting way worse. When I got the Mavic 3 I was finding it way to fast and "jerky" when it used to be a lot smoother.
Thank you for making YT a whole lot better. Yours is one of those channels whose content is peripheral to my work but where I learn useful info and absorb great amounts of art and craft.

Oh they're doing the same thing with remote id as they did tripod mode update. At first it was to be all drones. As per my correspondence with them on that. The air 2 and prior drones aren't really in their plans. They basically said we have until September to see what we will do, but you can buy a module if not. Read between the lines on that statement.
Thanks for trying, but it's been noticeable for a long time that DJI has no interest in fixing the product you bought. They only listen to us when it comes to the next drone they want us to buy. They release a product then leave it to die within a year.
Thanks for pressing for tripod mode. It looks really useful. I'm new to video with a ton of stuff to learn, it can be hard to know where to start. With many years experience in stills photography some things like composition, framing and telling a visual story I'm comfortable with. Spent a lot of time and money getting to grips with sound. Bought DaVinci Studio as a NLE with most potential, but have yet to get beyond very basic editing. I know I need to practice, practice and some more to gain familiarity then eventually skill. Yet to start colour grading so you can see my ambition easily outruns my knowledge and skill set. I bought a DJI mini Pro from Wex just before last Christmas and intended using it for mostly video and photo shots, but sent it back, unused, early Feb for a refund as I hadn't found the time to learn how to use it. I intend to re-buy later, when I'm less busy (I have other hardware too that I really need to spend time learning how to use properly first). One concern I had re drones was the legal position on where you can fly and limited proximity to people, property etc that's permitted? In simple terms I'd appreciate knowing how you overcome this to really make the most of the mini pro's new tripod mode potential for jib, crane and gimbal like shooting? In practice is it all a compromise that means a gimbal and slider ate still pretty useful tools for dedicated camera ovements?
Really contemplating that Mini 3 Pro. I have the Air 2s and it's great and so is the Classic which I just picked up to replace it. However, the size of the Mini 3 Pro makes it seem like I would actually use it in situations where I wouldn't want to bring the larger ones, and as a result get better stuff. Hmm, decisions...
I picked one up a while back and find myself reaching for it now almost exclusively. The size was the most appealing initially but it’s much better than just its size. BTW… really enjoy your channel. You may have been the reason I bought a danged holographic fan. Lol

Great video Phil. I was one of the fools, an early adopter of a Mavic 3 to replace my Mavic 2 pro and my pain over the first year was as palpable as your video explains so graphically and surprisingly politely! I use it with a mini 3 pro commercially and for my own RU-vid vids and whilst I totally agree the mini is fantastic, it cannot compete with the Mavic 3 in breezy conditions, range and in anything other than good light. As you mention well, the long lens offers a whole new world of creativity. The flow of impressive but much needed updates to the big drone have been welcome and you explain the progress really clearly. But my respect for DJI as a company is at an all time low. The magic 3 is a fabulous drone now 15 months later, but will I ever be an early adopter of the next amazing flying machine.....no. really good work campaigning Phil, but why oh why should it take that? Hopefully, shots like your opening one will be possible without having to hold the controller once DJI releases the SDK to companies like DroneLink. I read that the SDK release is imminent
I barely use my 2s anymore because the shots I'd like to get with it are the exact shots that you like it for as well. I want to be able to fly it slower more easily. It's a great drone besides that. I also feel like the footage falls apart pretty easy while grading. It seems to macro block easily.
As someone whose waited forever to purchased a new drone since the M2P is fantastic by most accounts. I appreciate the thorough overview of all the gritty details between these two models, which has made the purchase so hard! and I'll still be waiting it looks like...

Phillip, I started watching your videos many years ago when I stumbled upon your Letus Extreme DOF adaptor review. Fast forward to now - my Phantom 4 Pro is getting old, and it's time for me to get a new drone. Thanks for all the informative videos over the years, they have been very helpful.
I mentioned it before, but you're a 'thumber' of the sticks. Pinching the sticks makes life flying drones much easier. It's a hard habit to break, but once done, it's a game changer. Only way I can truly explain it that it's the same mental rewiring for back button focus, but look at the benefits once it becomes natural.
I'm sure it can be said that these drones are more for cinematography, but I wish they would make the little remote like Skydio has. I have the Mini 3 Pro and want to use it to follow while mountain biking. Aside from that, nice drone.
I have watched almost all of your RU-vid content and commented on how beautiful they are, how calming and serene almost melancholy they are… you are indeed a wonderful cinematographer. The issue that I have, and it is entirely my own, is that there is a disconnect as a result of my lack of understanding of the basics of photography / videography. That is entirely on me. It doesn’t spoil the enjoyment of watching your content… it just saddens me that I don’t have that extra understanding or someone as good as you to teach me. Nonetheless, I am always so pleased when that notification pops up with your next film… and slavishly I watch along and love the experience with just that tinge of regret that I don’t have the knowledge and therefore experience required to get the most of my Mini 3 Pro. Oh really, it’s my lack of knowledge and awareness around ISO versus FPS etc… I think it could be described as a misspent career in which I chased being the best at my work rather than pursuing the things that interested me. All to no avail… or at least not nearly as fulfilling as I had hoped. Retired now, though young to be so, but burned out and tired… I had such big plans but burn out is very real for me and so I just enjoy content such as yours…
@@TiredOfAllOfThis ISO is the sensitivity to light. Don’t know if you’ve ever taken film photos but your bought 100 for bright days, 800 for average to low light and 1600 for low light. The higher the ISO the more film grain you saw. 100 being perfectly clean. It’s the same here with the drones. 100 is where the mini 3 pro is the cleanest, each time you move up to the next one that is a stop of light and the camera is boosting the signal to get there which adds noise, just like film. No you normally want to hide that noise, DJI were doing it with a heavy hand with the mini 3 pro and it totally destroyed the detail, they compensated with this by adding sharpness but all they were sharpening was mush. That’s why it’s best to do it in post production but it that requires knowledge and some skill to get the best results. That’s why I asked for them to do it to give people the option to be in control. The difference is huge if you do it well. Frame per second just means how many frames (photos essentially) are captured each second. If you capture 60fps then tell your editing software to play it back at 30fps then you have slow motion. When shooting 120fps the drone does that for you so it plays back as slow motion. Does that help?

The noise reduction for 4K is easily the biggest problem the drone has. Sadly you won’t get dlog on the top camera. The sensor can’t cope is what I was told.
I hope you convince dji to remove noise reduction in mavic 3. This should be a semi-professional drone and it's not. We should also have access to sharpness settings as in mavic 2. DJI is doing worse and worse work. Its really sad!! thank you for your contribution in improving dji's work and good luck !!
It's there. iZotope can work wonders. It has gotten much better over the years but not cheap. Another option is ADR, added dialogue replacement. Tell the talent beforehand, and bring them in in post to re-record dialogue.

What a fabulous video came across this by chance, inspiring and makes me want to learn more, so many generic videos out there and this is so much more in depth. Shame I have do so much of this on a budget and cant yet afford all the kit like lapel mics and extras for the software, will get there but the list of kit is extensive especially when I already have a fortunes worth of kit for my design and photography.

Concerning the noise inconsistency between the center and edge - perhaps it's not a difference in noise reduction, but rather a difference in how the camera amplifies the center vs. edges to counter the lens' natural vignette. Since it would needs to brighten the corners more, they end up noisier.

Excellent video... As usual, what a shame that DJI always seems to concentrate on the next release and fails to properly polish the jewels it has already produced. What's even more of a disappointment is the fact that they almost totally ignore the top-notch customer feedback. Arrogance perhaps? Or maybe they are well aware that the tech-junkies who are their main customer base will simply shelve last year's model in favour of forking out another small fortune to be able to flag the fact that they've got the latest and greatest.
when you are just curious what this man has to say about those two drones but you stumble upon a bbc documentary about these two drones. the only thing missing is sir David Attenborough narrating it.
What is the difference between FilmConvert Nitrate and Cinematch? Both of these do color grading? If so, why would I choose one over other? Appreciate your help in advance.
Thank you for all your efforts to make these drones better. It is all confusing to me however which drone has which features (or lack of them). I guess I'll have to put a spreadsheet together and list each feature. Very confusing. I don't understand why DJI does make these features available on all of their drones. I really have no idea which drone is best at this point for cinematography.
It’s frustrating for sure. The best for pure image, dynamic range and ability to withstand the wind then the Mavic in 5.1K, but then as you’ve seen it gets confusing.
It's always the same: a technology start to makes leaps in development and you start to think "I can't imagine where we will be in 5 years from now" and everytime 5 years later the products start to decline slowly 😄
