Unemployment will hit every age group. I'm in my 30's and am likely to be unemployed at the end of the work furlough. I will probably become self-employed if I can't find a job quickly. But what I won't do is sit around on welfare whining that its someone else's fault.

My current job wanted someone with 8-10 years of experience when I first applied for it. I had none. I got the job. Make it clear to the company what value you will bring to them and what sets you apart from the crowd. Why that company needs to hire you as an employee and not someone with years of experience. Show initiative in everything that you do and do your best to stand out. Eventually you'll be walking into interviews asking the interviewer why you should choose to work at their company.

There is a contact centre in my area, it is one of the biggest employers here. Very high staff turnover when I was there, the biggest jobs were very stressful for minimum wage. There was also no job security or guarentee of hours, if you got a job there you would start through an agency and your contract would allow the contact centre to get rid of you without any notice. They might not all be like that but when the majority of people I met doing this job were doing it to make a few quid for the summer or to survive christmas it doesn't seem like it's a very good thing if you are thinking of long term.

@amandahunter4034
@amandahunter4034 4 года назад
It's the combination of the pandemic and then Brexit that is going to create terrible pay and terms and conditions for many jobs. It's not going to be worth doing most of them, and people may as well be self-employed. Why work for an employer when you can make the same or more money and have more freedom working for yourself? Younger people are in the best position in some ways because they can be a lot more flexible about where they work and can move around the country. Plus, they have more experience with technology and can adapt better to new situations. I think young people shouldn't lose heart. They nearly got us a great Labour government instead of this Tory one, and can do it again.

@bakersmileyface
@bakersmileyface 4 года назад
Honestly it's a stupid question. There are plenty of jobs out there and young people can get hired without problem. It's just that many of us don't even try anymore. Take this guy for example. His job offer was withdrawn and he just accepts that? Why? I could think of several ways to try to convince them that taking me on is in their best interests. Maybe it would work, maybe not. But I'd leave that company with a good impression of me in case they do change their mind in the future and it won't hurt me at all. On top of that, he should be applying for way more places if he wants to get a job. Just one job offer withdrew and he's already blaming the government? There are literally thousands of jobs out there. If he's telling me he can't get a job with his qualifications then he's a liar. I'm living proof that young people can get jobs even without an education.

The whole economic model must change. Perhaps training young people in the care sector for the elderly might be a good start as ageing population outnumbers the young worldwide. Training young people to do fruit picking or cleaning is also vital as no one is capable of doing the job. And bring back all British call centres from India to the U.K. that’s another occupation the young can fulfil. I guess it’s up to the young people how they wish to see their future in U.K. otherwise things will just continue passively until it becomes the next issue. Perhaps make the U.K. into a huge factory hub in order to compete with Vietnam, Thailand and India. We also lack in recycling capabilities and infrastructure as I’ve found out we’ve been sending all our recyclable rubbish to Turkey where it gets burnt in their own country inhaling fumes of our toxic waste.
