Every shop should have a shaper!

But did I buy the shaper?? or something else in the shot?? 😱😱😱. All the best, Matt 👍

HNY mate 👋🏼. I’m tonguing for that boiler Matt… It would be cool to see the loco on air…. let alone in steam 🤞🤞 You’re one of the happiest blokes on RU-vid…. a great contrast to all the know-it-all ‘snarlers’ 🤣 Anyhoo…. I hope you have a fantastic 2024.🎉 Go hard ……. Robert

Happy New Year Robert, thank you for your support of the channel and my projects, it's much appreciated. Well the video will come this year on the boiler. I always live by "everyday is a school day, there is always something to learn", I do everything as Ive been taught in industry, it maybe right or it maybe wrong.... but I have fun doing it, and thats more important. I'm also happy to say when it went wrong and if I've not done something before. All the best, Matt 👍

Filming is brutal. Anywhere you can skip the obvious stuff will be good for us and good for you. And if your shop is anything like mine, you’ll use the new secret machine a couple of times then go back to the Bridgeport because it’s so much faster and easier to use.
@MattChiversWorkshop

New machine will probably end up a semi restoration project as its painted in a hideous colour and then a play machine. All the best Matt 👍

All the very best for the new year Matt. I think you will find that a shaper is a must have tool. (There is a law about it somewhere...) Was that a gauntlet that you have thrown down?? Tell you what, why not plan a visit down south to see someone else's Tink in steam...
@MattChiversWorkshop

South??? of England?? Are you suggesting I go Moors Valley then?? 😉😂. Did I buy the shaper or the CNC lathe?? 🤔. Happy New Year my friend. All the best, Matt 👍

For your handwheel, just just buy a blank one of your choice, drill an appropriate size hole, add a drive pin, and Bob's your uncle. In the US there's an amazing source called McMaster-Carr which has an extensive selection. Hopefully there's a similar supplier in your country.
@MattChiversWorkshop
@MattChiversWorkshop 9 месяцев назад
Hi, Yes we have similar firms, but I'm sure nowhere near the size of McMaster-Carr. Probably going to be the best option though. All the best, Matt 👍

Matt A massive thankyou for ALL your videos esp. the steam engine build. Over Christmas I watched all 55 episodes [far better than anything on TV] and was only disappointed when I'd finished the last one............what to do next ?? When I was doing my Technology O level back in 1964 my teacher asked what we all wanted to do as our 2 year individual assessed project. Of course I said build a steam engine; its only now I realise what a favour he did me in declining my request!! So now I'm happy to watch your skilful hands at work honing many pieces of metal to make a living machine. Very best of luck for '24 and just keep 'em coming. Doug
@MattChiversWorkshop
@MattChiversWorkshop 9 месяцев назад
Wow, Thank you Doug, that is some watching!! I really appreciate the dedication and kind words. Steam engines take many years one average, think at one point model engineers took an average of 22 years to complete their models 😱. We don't have that long 😂. I have further projects to get on with. All the best for the year. Matt 👍

@MattChiversWorkshop I am really looking forward to the piping videos, nobody seems to go into detail about that aspect of the build. I built a Model works A3, everything was going great until I got to the pipework.. then it went t☆ts up. Turns out I was crap at bending pipes..... 🤣

Happy New Year Mark, hope you have a great year. Its not my workshop 😉, if I had that much room.... I'd probably be building a 2ft gauge loco 😂.. and I'd be even more broke than I am now! 😂😂😂. All the best, Matt 👍

Don't go to simple on the machine tool side of things, some of us don't know one end of a DRO from a feedscrew! Also, don't forget about the plastic kits, we don't all make massive metal models 😁.
@MattChiversWorkshop
@MattChiversWorkshop 9 месяцев назад
Hi Mike, Yes I have all the plastic kits to do as well, I'm on the verge of releasing a brand new model to the collection!! I was hoping to get it done before Christmas but time ran out. All the best, Matt 👍

My Harrison has a knock once in a revolution in low speed. Never harmed it in 20 years. I believe it is one gear The handle for the mill, ebay.
@MattChiversWorkshop
@MattChiversWorkshop 9 месяцев назад
I'm confident its not a gear, the noise is definitely coming from the bearing at the headstock next to the chuck. I've seen somewhere that there is adjustment that can be made on the bearing. Worst case scenario is new bearings. I'm not too worried about it though. Yes I've been looking on eBay for a handle. All the best, Matt. 👍
@union310
@union310 9 месяцев назад
@@MattChiversWorkshop If you purchase bearings you require goldline they are not run of the mill bearings in a lathe. The adjustment is inside the headstock on a locking ring on mine.

Exciting new videos coming by the sounds of it. I’m guessing you’re going to weld your own steel boiler. Also guessing that you will need to get the right welding ticket?
@MattChiversWorkshop
@MattChiversWorkshop 9 месяцев назад
Hi Mark, I'll reveal all in the video. All I'll say is having the right welding ticket is only the tip of the iceberg for this one. All the best, Matt 👍

@@MattChiversWorkshop Inspection? NDT? Dyepen? Guess you won’t need to go to x ray?
@MattChiversWorkshop

On the welding side, there is a lot of hoops to jump, but there is one big issue to start with before you're even at that stage. You'll have to wait and see. 👍

I’d really love to know where to get affordable Bridgeport spares too! Anyone have any tips?
@MattChiversWorkshop
@MattChiversWorkshop 9 месяцев назад
The two firms over here in the UK that supply Bridgeport parts charge extortionate prices for parts! I've considered buying parts from US, sure it would work out cheaper, even with the shipping. All the best, Matt 👍
