I have repaired my evap canister on my old 2000 Hyundai accent by cutting it open just as you did and yes that flimsy filter was torn , I went to wall Mart and bought a thin piece of very thin cloth like fabric and a piece of window screen and cut it to size and crazy glued around the edges then added the screen to each side , I refilled my canister with activated charcoal ( you can buy in the pet department) then plastic welded it back together with a little epoxy resin to help .. This fix worked perfectly !

Brian, this goes to you and those people who dare to get out there and get things that interest them done. I've felt shy and awkward most of my life, and as a result gave up on activities that I genuinely enjoy because of embarrassment or being afraid of failing. Watching people like you share what they learn and being curious has helped me get out of my shell more and try things I thought I couldn't do. I'm like a little kid with big sparking eyes looking down the internet tube in amazement. 🥲Thank you for all your work and for sharing what you care about and enjoy with us..

I had a 06 Tahoe come in for a p0446 vent performance and it wouldnt take gas easily so I checked the vent valve and it was clogged with dirt, I replaced it and sent the vehicle back out. It came back the next day with same concern I ended up pulling the tank down and found all of the evap lines full of those charcoal pellets from the canister that was a first for me never seen one break down like that but it sure was a lesson for me especially with having to drop the tank, clean the lines and replace the canister for free it’s definitely something I will check from now on

Helpfull video! I had done my evap canister in the same way, removed the charcoal and cleaned the inside filters with brake cleaner and then refilled with the old charcoal (only 160.000 kms old), soldered back with hot gun (PPR plumbing type). Finally removed the 0420 Catalyst system efficiency below threshold code and NOT reappeared again. Period 😂

Dude! This is the best! I've wondered what the inside of these looks like, not at all what I imagined. I thought it would look like a glasspack muffler with larger chunks of charcoal held back with perforated walls. Didn't imagine it would just be filled with fine granules like that. Pretty sure mine is clogged. Wonder what would happen if I cut mine open carefully, emptied the contents and put it back together, hummm...

Tried this out today, I had an on going Stoopid P0441 on my '96 Lexus ES300 ( Camry 3.0L), maybe 4+ years, always passed the bloody Kommunist Kalifornia mandated smog check, barely. I have done this for my '85 Porsche 911, Swapping the foam membrane with Cotton Swab Pad from CVS. Great thing is their 4"x4" pads are actually 8'x16" sheets folded in half twice and half, perfect for the 5.25"x6.0" base of the Lexus ES300 canister. I used my SawSaw to cut the bottom off cleanly, surprised how well it worked. As you found, the foam membrane was soaked and certain areas dense due to fuel/deterioration. I also used a hole punch to make holes in the original membrane to use it's sturdy structure to support the flimsy cotton swab. JB welded. No leaks :-) I will report if this allows proper flow for the EVAP system. Thanks you Master Brian for the inspiration!

Loved your video! Just when I am about to cry, you made me laugh with your humor. I have an evap system issue. My 2007 toyota rav4 will be going in for diagnostics next week. hopefully it's only the leak detection pump that needs to be replaced due rusty water in the canister and not a replacement of the charcoal filter or I am looking at about $1500 in repairs. Old age pension doesn't go far these days. Thanks for this video.

@Old man Goat Depending on the mileage and condition of it, if it's "only" a 2007, and that's the only major problem for it, it should still last a while longer with decent maintenance. My only question is if the EVAP canister is necessary if emissions are no longer being tested, and if it impacts any other aspects of the vehicle, other than emissions.

I brought the canister down off of my 2007 toyota camry v6 by the way. Bright red moon roof. How’s it going? I normally don’t subscribe to these videos but your the only one to actually take a couple apart to see how they work and why they fail. I just got a 2003 Hyundai Sonata and the people I got it from said they were having difficulty filling the gas tank. I had a good idea what the problem was and figured I could fix it myself without having to do too much. It’s strange, I have had fish tanks much of my life and used many different filters. These air filters are really similar to a canister filter for a fish tank. The charcoal is exactly the same, only on a car it’s filtering air and vapor. Unreal how simple these things are yet cause lots of problems. It seems they could easily come up with a much better design as shown from Hyundai to Toyota. Both could do slot better. Although if these things didn’t fail, we wouldn’t have videos like this and people wouldn’t have to spend millions on auto repairs on parts designed to fail. Thanks again! Hopefully if I have other issues your channel can help! Take care, stay safe and healthy!!

Hi there, very interesting to see what's in it! Could this part or the valve also be failing causing the car to have trouble idling but without causing a failure code in the ECU? My car runs on LPG (liquid gas) most of the time by the way, could that be causing this part to dry up or get saturated faster maybe?

So, two chambers so that if the user overfills his gas tank on a hill the raw gas only gets into one side, then the other side has a chance of pulling off the evaporated fuel into the intake with less chance of inhaling charcoal pellets? Are the two chambers connected by an internal pathway or is there a tube connecting the two? Does the vent always lead to the same chamber as the tank, with tubing to the purge solenoid on the other side? Or do I have it backwards? I would have thought failure would be saturation of pellets, not degradation of a flimsy filter. As you say, pellets draining out either side is a sure sign the filter on that side has failed. Nice video, Brian.

Great videos man! Just to throw in some usefulness, I have Actually had success reusing the charcoal canisters (on GM trucks and SUV') by removing it and blowing compressed air in the fuel side you will see all the dirt and debris come out the other. Tap it on the floor a few times and repeat. As you said it saves about $150. Granted my symptoms were a Tahoe that took forever to fuel up and was not throwing codes. Now that we have seen the inside, My guess is its probably just blowing that foam out lol. Either way it's been over a year and the fuel issues have not returned. Keep up with the videos man! Subscribed!
@Hedgehodge-
@Hedgehodge- 4 года назад
I'd be worried to blow any compression through that, would just shred that old brittle foam and sure, it probably works after that, because it's letting all those carbon pellets fill things it shouldn't (airflow). I rather cut it open and redo the activated charcoal and filter kit from like rockauto/Amazon and black silicone it shut or some crap with a clamp. Good stuff, thanks, I'll do that kit I see and measure the charcoal

I believe most of the time, the canister somehow gets a vacuum leak either from the canister itself somewhere or hoses. Also could be the solenoid that opens and closes the valve that's gone bad. Ideal to test and use soap/water mix to identify any leaks in the EVAP system.
@reck0n3r

This might be a dumb question, but is the EVAP canister (I have an '01 Toyota 4Runner) necessary to have if they're no longer doing emissions testing? I'm getting the codes pop up for mine, but not sure it's worth it to even have a mechanic go back there and look (would have to remove the spare to get it out) if it's no longer a requirement and has no other impact on wear or performance. And then the $300-400 to replace the thing. Is it necessary? Great video! Thanks

That was definitely a crash and roll! lol Yeah, EVAP systems are a necessary evil, but kind of a duplication of resources to the extreme. If only there were a way to simplify vehicles to have power from one big source that had filters on it and then you could channel and store that power in a clean safe way in our vehicles. THAT would be awesome! No more catalytic converters, evap systems, EGR coolers, DPF's etc.

If the charcoal becomes overly saturated with fuel it will cause them to fail. This can be caused by an over filled tank. If you compared the old one with a new one there was probably a noticeable weigh difference.
@briansmobile1

That's correct. Modern gas can'ts (cans, but they can't) don't work on a '99 Elantra filler neck. It fills the purge line and EVAP can full of fuel.
