Things to do in Kanazawa, where you can see beautiful historic Japan, temples and shrines without the crowds of Kyoto.
Continuing my series about places from my Japan wishlist, where I'd most like to go in Japan, Kanazawa in Ishikawa prefecture's often known as little Kyoto. You can explore historic, preserved streets, see old houses, geisha and samurai districts, Japanese gardens, temples and shrines. In the video I share why I'd like to go there and how to get there on the train from Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya and on the Hokuriku shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo. There are lots of things to do: teahouses in Higashi Chaya, Kenrokuen garden, the castle park, Nagamachi the samurai district, Myoryuji (also known as Ninjadera, the ninja temple!), Utatsuyama Park, a sake brewery, kimono rental and where to get gold leaf ice cream. There are also ideas for day trips from Kanazawa around the Chubu region.

We went to Kanazawa just three weeks ago, taking a route that was Tokyo to Kanazawa and then on to Kyoto and back to Tokyo by JR trains. The contrast of the three cities were wonderful. We especially liked Kanazawa which had been recommended by a Japanese Freind. One super useful aspect is that when you are fed up with walking (which as you said is great to do around the city, gardens and temples, there is an easy to use bus loop that goes past all the tourist spots. Buy the ticket at the bus station within the rail station for a hop on hop off service. The market was great with superb food stalls and little mom and pop restaurants. Another local specialty is sweet making - with a museum to the craft. The station has an excellent Japanese sweets food hall - also not to be missed. Thanks for the video!

That sounds fantastic! It's great to know you enjoyed it - I hope I can make it there one day! I'm sure that route will become more popular with the Hokuriku Arch Pass when the regular JR Pass price goes up in October. Did you stop off anywhere else on the way back to Tokyo on the JR trains or do the rest of the journey in one go?

@@cakeswithfaces Thanks - no just Kyoto direct back to Tokyo. Sadly only enough time for the three cities, but it would have been lovely to stop in one of the towns by Lake Biwa which you pass in its entirety on the way from Kanazawa to Kyoto.

A recommendation for a place to stay - my wife and I stayed at the Square hotel. It is very close to the fish market and Castle, very reasonable price and the staff is very comfortable with using smart phone language apps. Lastly, it has a laundry facility on the top floor, which we used to clear out our laundry bags. Hope you get to go soon.

The castle and the Garden are must sees. The indoor Omicho fish market is possibly the best one I've been to, its great for rainy days and had the best Sushi and Korroke I've ever had, my hotel was literally 2 minutes away. Both Geisha districts are very nice to photograph. The station has a cool clock that displays the time using jets of water, and the Tori gate is impressive. There are lots of streets that escaped destruction in WW2 that are really atmospheric to walk around at dusk, with tight little alleys, wooden bridges and tiny shrines tucked away. I took some great low light photos walking around them. Its a nice stop for a couple of nights, I think that's enough to see most things. I stopped on the way back from Osaka, I think it was the Thunderbird rapid express train not the Shinkansen, I did it on a Hokuriku Arch Pass, a little cheaper than a full JR pass.

@@cakeswithfaces It's a long way around using the arch pass to get to Osaka, but it saves around 40 pounds iirc, and if you do a stop on the way out and back its a good option. Have you been to Kobe? If not its a good day trip/overnight from Osaka. Chinatown, the tower and harbour are great.

@@Gazereths1234 No but if I went back to Osaka or that area, Kobe would definitely be on my list. I like the look of the waterfall and hikes/cablecars in the mountains at the edge of the city, on the way up to see the amazing view.

@@cakeswithfaces It's a great place. I only stayed for a day and had huge blisters at the time so didn't do any of the hiking/mountains etc. I just went up the tower at sunset, had dinner in Chinatown then had a wonder around Kobe Harbour land. The waterfront at night with the ferris wheel all lit up is a great view. I just got your travel guide in the post this evening its great!! I've only read the first 20 or so pages but have learned things already. hmmm,... Kanazawa is beautiful,... the gold craft goes into everything from utensils to food,... hahaha! the gold tea room is a reconstruction of the one made by Toyotomi Hideyoshi,... yes, it's cheezy! (^_^) . Sadly not much is left of the castle but the associated garden is really nice. The old neighborhood homes let the tsubame build their nests in the front eaves so the birds are constantly flying through the streets. I think that the Maeda clan did an especially good job of administration and luckily this place didn't get fire bombed during the Pacific War.

Actually when I was researching the shops in Higashi Chaya I saw a photo of a birds nest in one of the old wooden buildings! :-)

@@cakeswithfaces um,... it can get kind of filthy, even with a piece of cardboard placed underneath. Though,... way back in the day folks would let the birds build the nest inside the house,... (-_-) ... hmmm,... if you visit here in Winter you can eat kan-buri,... it's Winter fish so there is extra yummy fat! (^_^)

@@cakeswithfaces Yes I enjoyed Kyoto but when I got there early in the morning I was physically & mentally tired. Got there by night bus at 6 am and couldn't do the check in till 5 pm. Used the bit of strength I had left to walk to the hotel.

@@sailorfan86 Wow that sounds intense!! It can sound like a good plan to have a long day and make the most of your trip but it can be difficult! Reminds me of when we landed in Japan early in the morning but couldn't check in until later - sometimes all you want to do is take a nap!!

@@cakeswithfaces EXACTLY I was so " DEAD " that I agreed to go to an internet Café where they smoked just so I could rest. That was traumatic. ^-^

Thank you! Your videos are excellent. I have been to Japan and can recommend some places. Going to kanazawa on my next trip next sept. I have been to Tokyo, nikko (highly recommend!), matsumoto (recommend the castle, beautiful), takayama, shirakawago, Kyoto, Osaka, himeji (highly recommend the castle), nara (it was ok but just ok), and mount koyasan (a must see!!!!). This is a must see place and definitely try to stay 2 nights & wake up very early 5am appx and go see the cemetery when its 100% empty. Be careful of bears though. Bring whistle or bell. Heard there are bears in the area. We didn't see any. Amazing place though. A true Japan experience!

I have a 'Q & A pt.2': My favorite Tokyo tour site was 'Toei Animation Studio and Museum' located at Nerima. Do I pay for the ticket 🎫 to get into the museum? It was a 'free admission' while you bring your 'passport 🛂' & the securities will give you a 'free passes'. Is that true? Indeed.
