In this week’s episode, we discuss what's in and kicked out of my camera bag for landscape photography in 2020. I just returned from a fantastic week of photography in Arizona and figured it would be a good time to create this year’s what’s in my camera bag video, but with a twist. Over the last year, I’ve made a concentrated effort to reduce the amount of gear I carry in my camera bag. I’m not getting any younger and my back certainly isn’t getting any better either, so carrying as few items as possible for my landscape photography is of the utmost importance to me.
In this video, I review what’s in and what I'm eliminating from my camera bag in 2020. I’ve added and changed quite a few items in my photography kit this past year and at the same time also reduced the amount of accessories I'm carrying as well. I focused on removing many redundant items from my camera bag in order to not only reduce weight, but to also free up space within my bag. Another area of focus for me over the past year was identifying my rarely used landscape photography gear and I was quite surprised just how many items fell into this category. And, as you can imagine, these are the items that are no longer in my camera bag moving forward.
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that photography is an exclusionary art, it’s just as important to focus on what you exclude as what you include in your frame. I think packing your camera bag can be looked at the same way. What’s not in your camera bag is just as important as what’s in you camera bag..especially when it comes to landscape photography as the amount of gear you're lugging around can directly impact your overall enjoyment while on location.
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.
Thanks for watching everyone!

What are you kicking out of your camera bag for 2020?

At January I added the Rode video micro for my vlogs ✌🏻👍🏻 And a new ND filter 1000 from Gobe And the sigma 70-300mm lens. I don't think I need anything for 2020 for now 😄

Like you ..the gorilla pod. Also my HiTech filter system. I have been using the Kase magnetic filter system and found it fits my needs 95% of the time. About 4 filters with some step up rings and I am good to go. Saves space and weight.

I have to say you seem to be carrying an enormous amount of kit (Stuff) for day shooting. It was the same for me a few years ago so I got rid of everything (Canon 5D MkIII + lenses etc etc) Just kept my tripod and converted to Olympus Micro four thirds. Best thing I ever did and now I carry a small Thinktank Turnstyle 20 sling bag which contains all I need for day shooting. OM-D E-M1 Mark III (no need for filters now). Panasonic 8-18mm wide angle lens, and Olympus 12-100mm Pro lens. I still take a tripod but the IBIS is so good I hardly need it. I don't carry a computer with me thank god!.

2:38] I love this video, in a certain way. It really brings me back. If you have ever carried a mortar tube through the woods after you have already completed a fire mission, you would simply fold the legs of your tripod [bipod] and throw it up against your shoulder and head off, so you don't have to first disassemble then reassemble your most mission critical piece of hardware for when you are called to fire your next fire mission. The bullet-blockers up ahead will really appreciate the extra twenty or thirty seconds you've bought them before the HE arrives on target. BTW, I was alway the bullet-blocker in that scenario. "HE quick on target..!"

I've commented before, but I may not quite so much in the future. That statement needs an explanation, so....... I watch most things you do, and enjoy the subjects you talk about a lot. The presentations are so good that there are rarely any questions to ask. It's all done in your relaxed manner with no hard rights or wrongs, just general guidance. You share your views, and leave the people like me to make up their own mind. So there you have it, in general, no need to comment. Just to reassure you though, we are all there; watching and working it all out! (A thumbs up from me), where to next I wonder.

Thanks Mark, I find the cable/shutter release critical to carry. I find it kinda of difficult to time crashing waves and wind blowing leaves with the cameras self timer. I like most viewers here don’t shoot RU-vid videos so I don’t need to carry all the extra video stuff. That frees me up to carry a snack, first aid kit, survival gear, Bowie knife, Glock...

I find my best photos come from having bare minimum photography stuff and more outdoor gear. I end up deeper into the back country with capability to handle overnight stays, long miles, and extreme weather, if need be. There's thousands of photos from popular scenery that requires 5-6 miles or less of hiking, so I go deeper.

I spent a month in Newfoundland and since I drove from South Carolina I took everything including 6 lenses. I actually used my Sony A7R2 and a 70-200mm f4 lens for every single shot. I also drove to Del Rio Texas to shoot the the Union Pacific Big Boy steam locomotive. Again, I took everything, but my trusty Sony 70-200 f4 lens never came off my camera even for night shots in the rail yard. For local photography I don't even carry a bag. Just a couple of batteries in my pocket and my camera with my trusty 70-200 f4 mounted on it and in my hand. No neck strap and only a wrist strap in case I lose my grip. I don't feel that I have missed a shot as a result of this methodology.

@@emekappa - Last year the Union Pacific RR ran their restored 4014 steam locomotive on a grand loop of their system over 4 months. I met the train in Del Rio Texas because I didn't want to shoot in dense forests. There were thousands of people along the route and we actually chased the train for about 100 miles stopping at different locations for shots. I was also given special permission to shoot inside the yard well into the night using a 600ws Good strobe. we had a GREAT time and was perhaps my best vacation EVER! The locomotive is currently in Utah and another tour has not been announced. You can google the Union Pacific RR for details. This is one of the worlds largest steam locomotives ever. It is fully restored and operational and a thrill to see in action. My wife couldn't understand why I wanted to go all the way to W. Texas to see a stupid train. When she saw it, she understood and was thrilled to participate in the chase.

@@emekappa - This is the Union Pacific 4014 steam locomotive built in 1941. It is a fully restored and operational steam locomotive. In late 2019 the 4014 made a grand tour of the UP main line in celebration of the "Golden Spike" at Promontory Point joining the Transcontinental Rail Road. The grand tour took nearly 5 months to complete with many stops along the way. There were thousands of people along the tracks waiting for a glimpse of the train in action. We met the train in Del Rio Texas and chased the train for about 100 miles. This was a real thrill and perhaps my best vacation EVER. DJI is making drones that are under the weight for flight restrictions. And i think you only need your phone app to control it. Lightweight and good solution to bringing a drone everywhere in case you need it it. if you don't use it too often then keeping one fully charged battery in it should do its job. been debating the drone situation alot myself lol

Nice video of what's in your bag. The Shimoda is a nice pack, but I found the ThinkTank Backlight Elite 45L to be even better. The ICU accessed through the back panel can hold all your gear you mentioned, including your filter and other stuff you keep in that awkward top pocket. Everything is right there that you need for shooting. The bag also has a top pocket easily accessed through a zipper. I would encourage you to do a side by side comparison with that bag or any other. I don't think it gets the exposure that it deserves. I think it beats packs from F-Stop, Lowepro and Atlas as well.

Hey Mark! I hope you don't mind that I leave some feedback based on my own experience: 1) Have you considered upgrading from the A7RII to the now cheaper A7RIII? It would allow you to travel with less batteries since it uses Sony's latest ones; 2) Have you heard of magnetic filters? Kase has a few. Filter systems like yours seem to occupy too much space and weight; 3) I also stopped carrying my gorillapod around since it was one of those "just in case" items that quickly fill up our bags. Just from watching the video it seems like you cut down on lenses but there's still a lot of stuff that you bring "just in case" that add up for a lot more than a smaller lens like the 55 1.8 you have. Keep up the great work!

I have to agree about the drone that it can take up a lot of room with all of the different things you need for it inside your bag, but I have to say, try the mavic mini. It shoots plenty good video footage and photos and it takes up a fraction of the room as other drones. Plus, it's not even $600 for the drone and a few batteries!

Time for a garage sale! I used to drag along most of my lenses but like you, I’ve gone to carrying one extra lens and the one on the camera. A couple of lens cloths,a blower, a couple of screw on filters or my Lee kit, and my tripod. A lightweight backpack with some padding and my iPad and off we go. On rare occasions I regret not having a certain item with me but not often enough to consider going back to lugging a larger bag around. I’d enjoy seeing your iPad editing workflow. Cheers Mark!

I really liked the snow setting. I was planning to go to some of the new places I've discovered around here this year, to shoot them in the snow. I learned that from your videos! To select places to shoot and shoot them in a variety of seasons, and weather conditions. Unfortunately, the snow never got up here to Virginia Beach. :( Maybe next year! I've been shooting pictures since 1970. That was during the ancient 35mm negative film and slide era. I've been wanting to digitize my slides and negatives before they fade away. So, after doing some research I bought a Wolverine Titan Film to Digital Converter and started digitizing my slides and negatives. It does a really great job! But now I am working on the post processing of my photographs from years ago. Something I could never do before we entered the digital and computer age. A lot of work! But enjoying the memories!

Hi, Mark! Even if you removed many items from the backpack, it still seems to be big and heavy. I do not know what you could eliminate now, but I am convinced that in the next evaluation you will think about when you last used each item and you will be able to optimize the number and weight of items carried each day. Maybe you'll start with batteries. Don't you have too many for one day? 😊
@MarkDenneyPhoto

Unfortunately the Sony a7rii is awful on the batteries, but I could probably shed maybe one😄

Is it just me or were the first 2.5 mins of this video ASMR-like? 😅 You've listed down a couple of items that's going on my shopping list! 😂 The shower cap and headlight would have been useful while I was doing waterfall and aurora photography in Iceland.

+1 to see you edit your photos on the iPad. Also, Lumafusion is more than capable in editing video. If highly recommend giving it a good try as it can really help with the portability of the iPad . Great videos. Keep em' coming.

I really enjoy the out in the field kinda video you did this week and last week while on location. Recently went out for my first shoot using my Canon T7i & 18-55 Kit lens, exploring and finding composition was alot harder than I thought but nonetheless it was fun, due to the trees not being as green or simply not having leaves I had to get creative. I had a hard time finding good leading lines and something to anchor the photo but still decided to shoot as much as possible just for the experience. I did also attempt a long exposure but I didn't have a ND filter to help reduce the light coming in which I know you mentioned can be done in post, but other than that I had a great time and your videos and tips really helped me out in the field.

The last video I saw from you, probably last year, you said you bought the Fuji for video and starting liking it so much that you were using it as your primary camera. I guess you have gone back to Sony which is heavier and more costly. Probably b/c you can print bigger....Stay safe during this strange time...I will stay with my XT3 for all...cheers

I've stopped taking a tripod with me as I hardly ever used it thanks to the IBIS in my camera. I never photograph waterfalls or water generally so I rarely need to slow the shutter speed down. The iPad Pro is a game changer, right? I haven't taken my laptop on a trip ever since getting the iPad Pro. By the way, Lumafusion works better and faster on my iPad than it does on my 2015 MacBook Pro.

Also please keep in mind that you MUST have a pilot license for the drone if you are going to use the footage on any youtube channel or on any social media that promotes you in any way. Also your drone now MUST have a transponder (if it is over 250grams), which is not something included in ANY commercially available drone. The FAA DOES look at people's youtube and social media to find offenders and there could be a fine up to $100K! Obviously these are rules for the United States but make sure you know your local laws!
