Watch as I unbox my new Billingham 445 (amzn.to/32igLwq) camera bag and move out of my old Think Tank Photo Retrospective 30 2.0 (amzn.to/2QrsweN) messenger bag.
My computer is 15.4" but after reviewing the 16" specs and the bag, the 16" should still fit in the front and back of the bag as the 16" is only 1/4" (8mm) wider and 1/5" (5mm) deeper. The back pocket for instance still has 5/8" (16mm) of room in both directions with my laptop inside and the front pocket has even more.

The leather locking straps wear in to where it is easy to open. Your bag will just get better and better throughout the years! Being British I started my career with the Billingham 550 series back in the early eighties and the last one I bought was the Hadley. They are gorgeous and stylish bags but I use inserts from other bags in them because inserts have never been their strong point. I would suggest getting a nice fitted neoprene cover for your MacBook pro and that will be enough protection for use in the front pocket. Enjoy your new bag!😀🙏🏾

Thanks for your kind message and insights. I was actually thinking the straps would wear in nicely and I think I will get on ebay and see what I can find for the laptop. I just hope what I find looks as good as the bag! Cheers!

The 445 models has enough space for 3 or even 4 cameras and about 4 of 5 lenses can be fitted inside the bag and if you got a laptop as well is can be fitted inside the bag as well and these are the classic bags made from 1970s and are still the best model been used By lots of photographers

I stopped using mine because there wasn’t a trolly strap that would let me put it over the top handle of my carry on.

Thanks for the video, John. I've just picked up one of these bags off eBay for 60 quid. It is pretty much in a spotless condition - probably about 20 years old, with some signs of wear, but doesn't seem to have had much use at all. Your video was very useful as it enabled me to work out if it would be suitably sized, or not for my Nikon kit. Nicely done, indeed! Cheers! 👍

I have this Billingham 225 and it’s really heavy for my shoulder when loaded, the pockets are not exactly easy to use and the zipper scratches as I pull gear out when it’s on my shoulder. It’s a great looking bag and that “Made in England” label gives me a bit ego boost. Hope you enjoy the bag better than me.

You have to check the 28-70 2.0 RF .. and you will leave the 50 , 85 and the 24-70 at Home! That was happen to me a couple of months ago .. I still love more the think thank bag !

The 207 is nice, as is the Leica M bag. Own a Pola too, all black nytex. That is also the best choice, durable and light. A Manual…… ?pfffft. 🎉

I like what’s in your bag John. Any chance you’d switch completely to the mirrorless if you get a second R5 or would you keep your 5D Mark IV? Also, is the R5 that amazing, that you’d want 2? Really cool video.. I like the way you started this one

Thanks man! Making fun of our President at the beginning was something I was unsure about doing! I am pretty sure I will get a second R5 and sell my 5DIV my only DSLR. The AF and the in viewfinder cropping in the R5 is just revolutionary in the studio. Plus who doesn't like more MP!

I didn’t anticipate your response especially with your ecosystem of EF lenses. I understand you’re an early adopter. You also said you want to get the sigma art 85 RF Mount does that mean you’ve changed your mind about the canon 85 f2 and are okay with waiting till mid next year for the sigma RF?

I don't really get this idea that the RF lenses are supposed to be so much better. I think if you're adapting top quality lenses, the images should still be top quality. Maybe it matters for slow shutter speeds or quickly moving subjects? Why are they supposed to be so much better? The EF SIgma Art Lenses and all of the EF lenses I have on the R5 work great. The AF on the R5 with EF lenses is much better than the 5DIV, so overall I am not sure there is a reason to switch at the moment. The complicating factor is that I still need EF lenses for my cinema camera. The one video I saw about the 85 f2 basically referred to it as a prosumer lens that will be great for parents who what to upgrade from their kit lens.

You truly have a well rounded collection of sharp EF glass, I personally wouldn’t worry about buying RF lenses in your shoes. However, from my experience with the L series RF lenses, I can confirm they are a step further than the EF versions in terms sharpness and image quality. Holding on to your EF glass is definitely a wise and logical business decision. I would advise you hold on to the Mark IV too to be honest.

Thanks! I just might, well until there is a response from Canon about overheating, but then again it's not like I can just order a second R5 and have it here tomorrow. IDK if you have seen this before, but this is a great resource for comparing lenses before you guy. I love my 445 but I'm thinking of moving up to the 555. At the moment I carry my lens and cameras in the 445 then carry flashes, meters, chargers, etc in the 335. I use 4 lens inserts, the wide ones, at the bottom of the bag. Over them I use flaps and put two 1Dx's on top. There is still room for another lens in between them. I use to use Domke's which are still great but after a few years look like a pair of old jeans.

Good to know! Currently I’m using a Tenba bag because it has a trolly strap for my luggage. Navigating an airport with the Billingham bag was a real hassle and it’s a shame they don’t have one.

John Gress then you need a Billingham to Tenba video! Ive used the waist belt on the Billingham bags. They work pretty good on luggage. Another alternative is to take your bag to a dry cleaner, tailor, or cobbler to add a piece of material to the bag as a trolley strap. I hope you use a luggage with wheels on each corner it makes the task a bit easier.

Hey man I have a 335. As much as the material is waterproof, the design of it is flawed. The main flap doesn’t really covers the top of the bag, leaving the main zip on the right and left of the bag exposed. I have my Hadley and have been in a heavy downpour without issues but I don’t have confidence with my 335 in a rain because of the exposed zipper. And yes it’s heavy, and with all the gears the bag can swallowed, it is definitely not the bag to be carried over on the shoulder.

I do most of the time on most of my lenses. Using them wasn't very practical when I was shooting live events in my previous life.

I did keep it. I have an ongoing video project where I need my thinktank backpack, so the Billingham hasn't gotten much use. But once the movie is over, I will go back to it.

The Think Tank is called "best photo bag of the world"... and that´s bullshit. I´ve got the Retrospective 30 Mk 2, and to be honest: This bag earns a lot of sympathy, but in a lot of details it's not usable for hard jobs. The dividers are criminal thin, and not practicable. The laptop compartment let misses 2 centimeters in the hight... my old 13" MacBook Air does fit, but it's endangered by the other equipment. At least: If the bag is full and heavy, it can easily can fall over. My new Billingham 307 is not perfect in this point, but much better. And superb good at all. Ok, it costs much more, but it´s worth every coin. Not the Think Tank. There is only one unfulfilled wish to Billingham: A bag which can handle 2 Cams (pro or with grip), one with a 70-200/2.8 and another with a bigger Zoom like 24-70/2.8 or 24-120/4.0. Ok, i now, lot of people prefer smaller equipment now, but its a standard setup for press photographers...
