Awesome vid and for sure could save lives,too many people go out into the hills especially in Scotland and don't realise how quickly the weather can change,stuff like a whistle, bivvy shelter, weigh grams and can and no doubt have been the difference in someone coming home to his/her family or otherwise. Top vid with a great message.
It's amazing how much you can fit in! Our biggest problem is our vlogging gear. It's always hard to fit out cameras, gopro, and drone in places that are accessible, without blocking other essentials like food and water. We're looking into upgrading our packs soon to something a bit better. Thanks for the video!
Thanks folks - I didn’t cover the camera stuff but have included links in the description of vlogs where I’ve talked about the camera clips etc etc I feel your pain though as the camera gear is usually the heaviest part of the kit ! Very informative. Great advice. It's good to see that you use dry sacks (I use the same EXPED ones). Keeps kit dry, especially down insulation and spare clothing, and helps organisation. I still can't understand why anyone would use a trash bag liner because in my experience they just rip.
The dry bags are a great idea Murray, my rucksacks all have water proof covers but as you hinted at when the wind is howling they are a total pain in the arse. Will have to invest in some once we are released back into the wild. Thanks for interesting video and take care . Atb Brian.

Great Murray, You did forget all the camera gear! Before I retired from SARDA (search and rescue dog association) I used to give "talks" to various groups, I found that emptying your winter rucksack was one that kept the folks really interested. Not only my personal gear/dogs gear but also gear for a rescue. Watching what you have in your rucksack makes me think I still carry too much (just in case) thanks again for your videos. stay safe as the hills await's

Enjoyed that Murray, thanks for sharing. Same back pack as me 😀 and I tend to do similar and use dry bags of varying sizes within my backpack. The only other thing I carry is a small knife which can come in handy and if I know it's going to be wet the proverbial flask of hot coffee or chocolate.
Interesting to see inside the bag :) Good idea about boot laces, think I might add some to my bag. Other things which I like to have are a small foam mat to sit on (insulates you from any cold damp ground while eating lunch, was only a few quid from Decathlon I think) and a little leatherman PS4 squirt multi tool (which I've only ever used for adjusting my walking poles, but feels nice to have a few tools available). Also got a bunch of other rubbish which I should probably just get rid of but can't bear to leave behind 'just in case'!
Very informative Murray and you’ve just reminded me to order a water bladder! Must admit, I did order some dry bags after my last walk in the lakes prior to lockdown. The wind blew my rain cover off the bag never to be seen again 😑

I use dry bags in my pack too - it works great for Scotland's frequent rainfall. That rucksack looks pretty good. I'm currently looking for a replacement for a flimsy Montane one I've just sold. And the hydration pack looks really good too... This video could end up costing me a few quid Murray. ; )
Hi Murray, I'm a what if kind of guy and carry all of the above except the battery charger. Rely on a buddy for the GPS, sometimes get the mickey taken for whats in the rucksack. I find the goggles are handy if the rain is blowing into your face......stay safe

Near identical kit for me Murray 😊. Only other wee things sometimes a fold up foam mat to sit on and a few wet wipes, hate having sticky hands for the rest of the day after my lunchtime orange ! 😆 Also handy on these C19 days...

Nice one murry I dont use the waterproof bags been thinking about it for a while my ruk has built in cover I also have a dive beacon which basically when switched on it pulses. Never had to use thankfully but a piece of safety carried
Cracking video and really informative, as usual. I'd love to know more about food and water you take and how this differs on day trips versus overnight wild camps. I'm especially interested in what you think is the best way to filter/treat water from sources high up. The less water I can get away with carrying and the more I can source and filter/treat high up the better! Also the wee food packs you sometimes use with the jetboil, any good? A wee Sunday video on this subject would be very interesting I think. Cheers and keep up the good work 👍

I have given five people a lace in the last thirty years. Its funny when you say carting extra could be overkill. My over kill is a lighter matches and waterproof matches. As you well know wind and wet is the biggest problem for Scotland's seasons.

I stitched a deep cut on my arm then I was shown a way to use a suture with duct tape where you don’t suture the skin you use the tape either side and stitch the tape together to close the wound until you get to a medic without risk of damaging the delicate exposed tissue. Tapes amazing for multiple applications.

Me and my pal climbed ben lomond this winter and it was a white out, we became lost on the summit, vis was around 4/5m we could have used one of those shelters and a gps haha.

pity the tourists can't watch this last year well 2019 I was coming down the Ben with my then 9 year old and they were starting up in pumps tea shirts and clutching a bottles of pop ! and we had sat in all the layers on the summit, that's the beauty of the out of the way hills not so much chance of seeing the unprepared
Great video, Murray. What are the gloves and both over trousers you are using? Gloves especially are hard to find that keep your hands warm while also being able to work camera and phone.
Hi Philip - thanks for the comment . The gloves here are seal skin winter gloves and just some thin cheap camera gloves I got from Amazon . For camera use the ones with retractable fingers are really good - I have the thin ones here and also thicker ones bith from Amazon. The winter ones were good and relatively cheap but are starting to fall to bits now (well used though !!). Great video yet again. Exact same kit as me except I have a Swiss Army Knife, ( lighter for singing rope or cords : ) I also stick a few needles and a reel of thread in my First Aid kit, amazing how many times I used or lent it, not for suters so far! Keep up the gear good work and as ever thanks : )

Hi - you can get all different sorts and sizes :) I have a wide variety of sizes and they usually come in a pack of different sizes . In terms of the tent - I’d recommend using the cover made by the tent company for the tent - I do t do that because I lost mine 🙄😖 I’d loose the rain cover TBH I don’t tent to get o. Question for you..... I've got a similar daysack to the one in todays video which has a piece of memory board material in the pouch where Murrays platypus was. Which side of the board does the platypus or camelbak go?

Hey Murray, how do you store your reservoir after use? For a number of years now I have been storing mine in the freezer between uses under the thinking that it will stop bacteria forming.
Hi Nick, I've heard of that before - a good idea... I don't put mine in the freezer (mainly because there not much room and the wife might shoot me!!lol I tend to wash it , then open it out dismantled and leave it in a state where it can dry. @@ScotlandsMountains Ha ha. I used to use the whole cleaning kit, however then saw the freezer thing mentioned somewhere, so now myself and my wife put ours in the freezer. Doesn't take too long to defrost either.
@@NickHansonPhotography maybe I'm a dirty pig but I just leave mine in the rucksack full of water and change the water before I go out. Been doing it about 6 years and seems fine. Hopefully if the waters clean nothing should be growing in it in the dark. Either that or I've got a good immune system.

You may be one of the lucky ones that don't need them............ But one item l need (and spare incase of breakages) and funnily enough, never seen them in a kit review............. reading glasses 😉 The map, compass and Viewfinder are useless without them 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Getting old l guess.
One reason I gave up on contacts. I have worn glasses for 40 years and am quite short sighted. I tried contacts and initially they were a help on wet mountain days. Then I started needing a reading correction as well as a distance correction. with regular glasses on, I can just lift them and bring the map close in to read it. With contacts, I have to have reading glasses. Once on Helvellyn, I had misplaced my reading glasses and could not read the map at all. I eventually found then, but initially had to borrow a pair that were close enough to make do. From that day on, I have stuck with regular glasses. I am used to rain, but winter rime ice in freezing fog is a real pain with glasses.... Also, I have a spare compass after pulling mine out only to find a perspex plate with a round hole in it. The useful bit had dropped out...additionally, get a fluid filled one. I have also sat on a summit watching the needle of a cheap air fillled compass spin like a propeller. It was blowing a houlie, but it took some care sheilding to get a bearing and safely leave the summit.
