I love ultralight packing! Some tips that helped me in the field: - Keep your batteries warm at night (they die a lot faster when they're cold) - Take a small bag of dry rice to fill your shoes with when they're wet. Wet shoes are a nightmare to get dry again when in the field - Always take a towel with you, it WILL come in handy, every single time - Download your maps before you go, so you still find your way everywhere offline, when there's no reception
All really great tips, thanks for sharing! I’ll add in addition to the rice, save all of your silica gel packets from packaging you receive! Comes in really handy and can sometimes be more effective than rice for smaller objects.
You travel with a bag of rice? I find that my shoes dry faster from body heat when worn than anything else, and with quality wool socks I find my feet don’t get cold.
For natural deodorant, the only one I’ve found to work is Arm & Hammer Essentials. It’s usually in the men’s section, even though I’m a female, I feel like they have very neutral scents (and actually my husband turned me onto it! lol). Great video!
I recently got a pair of camp/beach type of shoes that I’ve been really enjoying for outdoor stuff. I can definitely see the appeal for the right trip!
Everywhere I've been there are shops. For Nepal I didn't even pack a razor. Cheap enough to get a barbershop shave (better than you could ever do yourself) every other day. Clothing is something one can buy in most places. Before the flight out drop off your t-shirts and sarong to a charity clothing bin. Never skimp on shoes, especially if you have big feet. Happy trails.
I have a few channel videos which I not only like to watch but I like to just keep it on as background noise as im doing my assignments or editing, this is one of em.
I watched like 7 of your videos in a row and just realized I wasn’t subscribed!!! My bad. Awesome stuff man I like how you show how to pack for us normal folks that don’t have the need for giant film gear.
I have that same phone stand! Also, I use Native deodorant and I think it works the best compared to other natural deodorants I’ve tried. It isn’t the cheapest but, it works well.
Another great video! Enjoy your trip. I been traveling so much again and I couldn't be happier. I got my wife and 7 year old son traveling with one bag as well. Wife and I are using the calpak stevyn duffle bags and our son is using his carry on size rolling luggage. he loves being able to finally help us with his luggage. i will say, the duffles we have are great for road trips no matter how long the trip. But my wife and I only complain is that even though we packs light, the bag is to heavy for us to carry all over the airport. As much as we want to do the one backpack travel we will be investing in rolling luggages before the end of the year.
I feel the same way about my Pakt one duffel. Absolutely love it for road trips, but always end up grabbing a backpack for air travel instead. Glad to hear your back and traveling again!
I have had really good luck with the Bravo Sierra deodorant, it is a mostly natural product i believe and it has performed really well for me over the last year
This was posted 2 years ago, but just watching now. Have you tried Pradalab deodorant? It’s natural and works for 48 hours! The small container is still too big for my minimalist travel, but I just put some in a smaller container and good to go!
I am bit confused about the focus on merino wool clothing. This is nice when you hand wash these clothing, but if you want to farm out washing of these clothing then they will be shredded. Wouldn't you be better off with more durable synthetics for travel.
I wonder about this all the time too! I use wool for damn near everything when I travel/hike on my own and I’m in control of my own laundry, but when I travel for work, which is about 6 months of the year, I’m too busy to do anything else than drop it off at a cleaner, and like I don’t know if I trust the little old lady that does my wash in Cusco or Kyoto to understand the care instructions of THIS t-shirt is different than the care instructions of THAT t-shirt.
@@kentroklus My concern is about travel in both South Asia and South East Asia. In those countries, the wool clothing may not survive the washing. Same may apply for some South American countries as well.
This is my exact reason why I don’t own wool clothes as well. I would love to use them but I use laundrettes all over the world and they would get ruined and lost often. Instead I still stick with “normal” cotton clothes. Cheap, easy to replace and I don’t mind if they get ruined/lost.
I don't send washing out but use a laundry/delicates bag for woolen stuff. It can then go in a wash with other stuff. The benefits outweigh the risks.synthetics have to be washed daily. the exception is outerwear shorts (like sports shorts). With Nylon they're durable, and with woolen underwear don't need to be washed often
Have you ever tried cream deodorant? You can get one in the US. Or melt down the remnants or a piece of deodorant (cup in a microwave) and pour it into an old, empty chapstick tube. It slidifies again and weighs nothing. I did this for backpacking.
Not too bad considering it’ll last indefinitely! Be sure to shop around a bit too if youre thinking about picking one up, seems like the price was pretty varied depending on the store.
You should try Uncle Harry’s tooth powder. I’m not affiliated with them, I just enjoy their tooth powder since a little goes a long way and my mouth feels cleaner using the powder than using toothpaste. The essential oils in the powder are also very refreshing. I tried crystal deodorants awhile back and they didn’t work for me. After trying other natural deodorants (some worked better than others), I developed a sensitivity to the baking soda found in many of them, but applying coconut oil on top helped with that. I decided to give crystal deodorant another try and it worked this time! I would get some irritation from it too, so I also applied coconut oil after using the crystal deodorant and since coconut oil has antimicrobial properties, it’s been a good combination.
I’m so glad you’re digging the beardbrand utility bar, it’s still a go-to for me. Most of my utility bars last at least 3 months for me. I also have the same experience with natural deodorants as you do so until I find something or create something myself-Dove is my choice.
Kicking myself for taking so long to try it, haha. Nice to hear from someone else in a similar deodorant situation too, feel like all those options work for everyone but me sometimes.
I’ve grown to really love my Zion pants from Prana, got them for hiking but theyre incredible comfortable and technically capable for travel. They have a pretty strong lineup of women’s options available, I’d take a look at what they have!
Try each and every natural deodorant. Is super good and my husband work in a restaurant 10 hours and come home smelling good. We try every natural deodorant and this is the best one you can find it in amazon.
You don’t need deodorant. Of course, it does mean that you have to throw away all your shirts that you’ve ever worn with deodorant and buy new ones that you never use deodorant with. Because the deodorant gets into the fabric and means that you need more deodorant. But I haven’t worn deodorant for over 20 years and have never needed to, although I don’t eat meat . I do keep a pack of antibacterial wet wipes with me and usually use these before I put my T-shirt on. Once you realise this, it’s a game changer.
I do! Depending on your budget and weight/size restrictions I have two that I really like. If you're okay with inflatable and want to save some money/weight/space this one is really solid: amzn.to/3n671Ug If you can afford the extra space in your bag for a non inflatable I really like this one too: amzn.to/3yPETar
It’s been several years since I’ve tried, I didn’t have much luck but native is by far the most recommended to me so maybe I should give it another shot.
@@joshfenn I had been using it for several months, and then had to switch scents, recently tried a third, and not only had the reoccurring issue but broke out from that particular one. Unfortunately I’m back on the hunt.
I do the never ending travel! We have the same for the soap bar ;) ... Toothpaste I want to try the powder one, at the time I use Colgate without anything bad it in, the Bio version ... But it is not carry on compatible!
@@joshfenn oh Beautiful Portland. I used to live there and haven't been there for a long time. But this year it is on my list, so I will go to pdx and see my Beautiful gorge ❤️😉
Hey Josh, I'm trying to decide whether it make sense to buy a camera for travel or just upgrade my smartphone. The iphone 12 pro max is temping. What are your thoughts on the comparison between the iphone and something like a point and shoot or mirrorless camera + kit lens for travel?
I think it just depends on your travel style and photography style. If I’m going home to visit family, or just having a more ‘touristy’ sort of trip sticking inside of the city I’m really happy with just the phone. If I’m going and doing more outdoor exploring though I really like to bring the big camera when I can, I mainly enjoy nature/landscape photography personally though. Hopefully this helps a bit!
After trying a dozen different deodorants, I found byHumankind to work for me. Everyman Jack worked for a few years but my skins microbiome changed several months ago and it stopped working.
I’ve been leaving the big camera behind more often lately as the iPhone cameras improve, especially aiming for an ultralight setup like this. It comes with me sometimes though! Just depends on the trip.
