How often do you change your strings? Tell me more About how you work on technique - Like a series on each etude and what it helps with? Tips to overcome technical issues

leahjkk great ideas! The longest I go is 6 months before I change new strings, but it depends on how much I’m playing. I usually try to change every 3-4 months thanks for the ideas Leah! I went through Rode piece by piece when I first learned it, so know I know what to play through if I want to brush up on second position, for example. The whole book is technically challenging so you can’t go wrong with any of them!

I am intrigued about your tailpiece! How come you use a harp shaped tailpiece? Great video!

Mary P Z Dixon hi! This viola came with a tailpiece shaped this way that I chose to upgrade. It makes the low end resonate more and the metal makes wolf tones go away!

Super video! Really interesting. I’m an adult learner of viola and it’s been a year and four months since beginning now. My instrument belongs to my sons school (there’s a group of us parents learning) - it was new when I started, but recently the strings have a resistant, scratchy (whistley?) feel, is this a sign I need new strings? I practice 60 to 90 mins most days of the week. Something has definitely changed, but as a noob it could equally be my playing! 😂😊

KathrynClark That’s awesome that you’re learning to play!! It’s hard to say if you need new strings or not without hearing you, but if you’ve never changed them that’ll definitely help! I never go more than 6 months without changing mine and I play a lot so I try to change mine every 3-4 months. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the advice, yes that's great! Yes there started off with 11 Mums learning, now down to 5 as some people have moved away or dropped out. Our teacher is getting us to compose one of our Grade 1 trinity pieces at the moment (the other two are from the book). Yikes. We are doing it in D Dorian, (modes are new to me - would never have done that in a million years if it wasn't for our teacher.

I prefer the Concord over the Bam myself. Bam cases are beautiful on the outside but very dark and dreary inside, and very industrial looking. Also the bow spinners are on the left hand side which drove me mad. If you really love your viola get a custom made Mustafa case which comes with a lifetime warranty. Really beautiful cases but definitely not cheap.

Humidifier? Did I miss that? Maybe violas aren’t as fussy as cellos...

Margaret Conley I actually don’t keep a damp it on me anymore. I’m not traveling to very cold places so I don’t have to worry about it too much!
