I don't do competition angling but do a lot of boat fishing and one important thing i carry is a small first aid kit and remember to charge it every year

Yep , fair comment . As a guide coach I also carry one . Didn’t add it to the vid as I wanted to keep things tight .

Always interesting to look through another anglers tackle - thanks for sharing Tim! Being an non-comp angler and just getting started (with a limited budget) if you were limited to 4 lines (fishing from an anchored boat), what would you choose? For weight-forward lines what length of head do you recommend? Cheers!
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 2 года назад
Thanks for watching . Ok as a beginner I would always suggest short head lengths as the require much less line to be aerialised and load the rod . So anything from 35 to 45 ft . Floater is your most important line in the box , you can turn this into a midge tip by using a shop bought poly leader , then a fast intermediate , a di 3 sinker and a fast sinking di7 would about cover you from a boat in the UK .

@@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 Thanks Tim! This really helps! Good idea about the floating line and a poly leader - lots of midge tip/sink tip options there!

@@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 Hi Tim, sorry to be a bother but could you help me with front end tapers? Being a 7 1/2 foot, double taper 4 weight, small stream trout guy, I have no experience with washing lines or the fly lines to throw them. I would like to cast a washing line, or an indicator setup or a modest lure (a 3 to 5 inch streamer) and guess that they all would require similar energy and taper to turn over - is this reasonable/possible all with one line? After hours of looking at lines with short tapers that claim they can cast small birds half way across to ocean and lines that claim to be as delicate as a damselfly I don't know what I need or who to believe. Would you please recommend suitable taper(s) or a couple of example line that I can use for reference as I search for lines available here in Canada. We have Airflow, Rio and Scientific Anglers products here. So far, I think the Rio Aqualux II would be a good intermediate line and the Rio Outbound I/S3/S5 and I/S5/S7 are interesting - but I don't know if these multi-density lines are better than a regular full sinking line or just a marketing gimmick. Thanks for any help!
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769

@@hankvana2149 As far as the sinking lines , go for the Airflo range they cannot be beaten for performance . Depending on the sink rates you require I would opt for the sixth sense slow inter and fast inter , 40 plus extreme (shorter head ) Di 3 , di5 di7 . You dont require all these lines but they are the options to go for . Floating line , probably the SA Mastery MPX , has a compact head designed for turning over teams of flies and bigger lures , to be honest all the brands you mention produce non stretch floating lines which I dont like at all , they result in lots of snap offs and some terrible memory issues . If I were to select any floating line it would be the Cortland 444 Peach or the Wychwood Connect series Rocket or the Snowbee XS . All excellent capable lines that are hugely popular in the UK for this kind of fishing , they all have mono cores which gives them a bit of stretch which I think it a must in any floater . Hope this helps mate .

Excellent video, cheers Tim. I don't suppose you could do a follow up one solely on your lines there? I think that would be a very popular topic and I can't remember all the lines you told me I'd need to get started in the comps lol. Unless they're top secret of course 😂

@@ibelieve1468 Those are the Wychwood spool tenders . I lable with the profile of the fly line i.e 12ft fast tip and the wt if im carrying more than one so 7wt or 8wt .. I dont bother with the manufacturers names as thats pretty irrelevant

Let's see what is inside a competitors fly box, not looking for secret patterns or anything, just an idea of what you guys use? As a next video I mean.
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 3 года назад
There are no secret flies mate .. folks might think they have secrets .. but there really arnt . You will see a lot of booby flies and Fabs in the boxes .. because depth control is paramount also the booby flies cause major disturbance . In a good competition anglers selection you will see a lot of crunchers , Diawl Bachs and dries as when fishing for highly pressured fish normally smaller more natural looking patterns will score better than bright lures after the fish have been practiced on for a few days . But all the patterns themselves you can buy from any fly selling firm . Its what we do with them that makes us more efficient . Attention to details with depth , retrieve , line selection , knots , casting angles , drift lines , watercraft ., homework , practice . the fly really isnt that important in the line up of things to get right .

I'm looking to get back into comp fishing myself after about 10 years and I know a lot of things have changed in that time. Thanks for the info but what other flies do you carry, ie wets, nymphs ect.
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 3 года назад
@@andrewlangley1532 Very few traditional wets , I carry a decent selection of Dabblers , love them mid to late season . Crunchers , Diawls , Muskins , Buzzers , Hairs ears and a big variety of dries . FABs and blobs and a selection of boobies It really depends on what lakes you are going to be doing most of your fishing and what kind of matches you will be entering .
