Wessex Archaeology presents 'What's in the Box?' A brand new RU-vid series in which a number of our well know experts will discuss their most intriguing finds and artefacts.
This week, presenter Sophie Clarke is joined by Project Officer, Phil Andrews. Phil joined Wessex in 1993 as a Senior Project Office, and has had many roles since including Wessex Archaeology’s involvement in Operation Nightingale, leading the innovative military initiative from 2012, which uses field archaeology to aid the recovery of service personnel wounded in conflict

Great contribution to the series! Now, I'm wondering if we have tools such as that in North America since above the Rio Grande, our metallurgy was very different from other places. Always something coming out of WA that makes me THINK! Good episode.

Oh, that's such a pretty tool! It's so smooth and polished, I bet it feels really good in the hand. There's just something about a tool that fits right, and feels good. You almost don't want to put it down! I'd love to see a tool like this in action, working metal, to get a really good sense of how it was used. Thanks for this!

I would guess that a hand held spectrometer could tell, from metal particles, what material it was used on or if, in fact, it was used on metal. Very nice tool. I'm wondering if the smooth surface may be from decades of handling or did it perhaps have a handle at one time? Curiosity piqued!
