A relaxing place to stroll around picturesque Japanese streets in Tokyo. Exploring Yanesen / Yanaka, including cat-spotting along Yanaka Ginza, beautiful Nezu Shrine and Snake Road!
If you're looking for chill places in Tokyo to get away from the busy, craziness of the city, Yanesen is the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon strolling around. It's a little off the beaten track, and a good place to visit on your second or third trip to Japan. There's Japanese street food, souvenirs and snacks along Yanaka Ginza, a famous cemetery with stray cats, photogenic streets and alleyways, temples and Nezu Shrine - a mini version of Fushimi Inari in Kyoto with all the red tori gates.

There is so much misinformation about those stairs here. They DO NOT appear in the film "Kimi No Na Wa / Your Name". Instead, they appear in the anime film "Yuuyake Dandan", which might not be so famous outside of Japan.

I really enjoyed this upload. I did not know what "Yanasen" was until you explained (I thought it was a train line or something). One of the things I really like your channel is that you do respect Japanese (and other) culture not to film in a cemetery or some places of worship unlike some insensitive gaijin tourists/youtubers who would not bother to care about those things! The stairs at the beginning of this upload - were they in some films or animes? The place looks vaguely familiar?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 5 лет назад
Ah because "sen" means trainline in Japanese? :-) Makes sense! ("Sen"se!) 😜 The stairs have been in lots of films - I don't know any of them as I don't think they're well known outside Japan. As a lot of people have said in the comments, they look like the stairs in the anime film Your Name, but they're actually at Suga Shrine near Shinjuku.

You could see the Diamond Fuji phenomenon on Fujimizaka Slope (it was the last place in Tokyo you could see this view from street level) close to this area in Nippori years ago but sadly I don't think that's the case anymore as new buildings were going to be put up that would obscure the mountain's view. I can't confirm if this is true or not as I haven't visited the slope for nearly 10 years.
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 3 года назад
Diamond Fuji would be amazing to see. I've heard of that problem in other areas eg streets that used to have a perfect view of the Tokyo Tower that got blocked by hotels, etc. A problem in a city so densely packed with buildings.

Ikebukuro was like that to me. Where the train station area was busy, but in my search for a second hand store... was very low key. I also went to the sugo shrine from Your Name... Just regular neighborhoods. Beautiful! You two have posted a lot of Japan videos lately... how long was this visit? Seems like you have been there a while, but getting a lot of content is not hard in one of walking around Japan. GET THAT MAN'S BIKE SO…E WD-40!! lol
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 5 лет назад
Interesting - I’ve only seen the busy central part of Ikebukuro! I’ve heard that if you keep walking away from the main areas in Tokyo you can discover quieter residential streets where people live. That’s something I think would be interesting about staying in an Airbnb or an apartment, and seeing a different, quieter side to the city. These recent videos are now from my trip in February, just less than 2 weeks (never long enough!)

It’s unofficial but if you go to a major shrine or temple like Senso-ji in Tokyo, you’ll quite often see people dressed up in kimono - you could try asking politely for a photo with them. There are lots of kimono rental places in Asakusa, and around Kyoto so you can also dress up yourself if you want to!
