Amazing. Thanks for showing this. I always knew there was a 'compressor' in there but never thought more about it. I guess it's obvious to those mechanically minded, but I think I sort of assumed it was some sort of different compressor technology. Didn't realise it was a regular old piston. Awesome to learn how technology is reused everywhere, it's just often hidden inside these black boxes. Surprised my old fridge isn't louder now.

The valve is called a "reed Valve" , the compressor pumps refrigerant, not air and the refrigerant has to be gas, not liquid. It can tolerate some oil as the oil is fully miscible with the refrigerant but liquid refrigerant will ultimately cause a broken reed valve. The intake is called the "Suction" and the outlet is called the "Discharge". If the reed valve breaks or gets bent from pumping liquid, the compressor will still run however the discharge gas will short cycle back into the suction of the compressor and then it will overheat and eventually burn out. Nice pull apart.

A lot of thought and engineering went into that compressor that majority of the people actually rely on every day, yet never knew what they did. Not sure what a fridge operates at but a car AC(pretty much the same basic function) can reach up to ~20 bar(~281.4 psi) before the safety valves start releasing. Looking at the size of that motor compared to the piston, it'll take a while(depending on pressure vessel size), but I'm sure it can pump a surprisingly high pressure.

I have a hypothetical question. If this compressor was together and working normally and you sucked up gasoline fumes with it, is there anything exposed inside the compressor electrically that could ignite the fumes? I’m not talking about the fumes as it leaves the compressor as we all know many things could ignite the fumes. I’m talking about inside.
@FromSaultoPaul
@FromSaultoPaul 3 года назад
Someone told me that you can put a match out in gas IF AND IF you were fast enough. It is the fumes that would ignite before it reached the gas. I would have to say yes it would if it had a big enough spark to ignite the gas but even gasoline is a liquid. So the gas fumes are far more easier to explode than the liquid. Unless it is broken, there should be no reason for a spark. A spark requires a space between two points to arc a cross. NOT an expert but just my thoughts
@cameronwarman6136
@cameronwarman6136 3 года назад
You need a certain amount of oxygen present for the fuel to explode. This is what a carburettor does in an internal combustion engine. If it is pumping liquid fuel and there is no oxygen present it shouldn’t ignite.
@chrisnotap
@chrisnotap 3 года назад
@@cameronwarman6136 Yes, I understand all of that but is there anything exposed electrically inside that would start a fire if the conditions were right? Some electric motors have brushes and inherently create small sparks at the brushes. Do these compressors create any sparks while running?

I have been searching for an answer to my issue for 2 days and have come up empty. I hope you can help. I had a new chest freezer delivered 2 days ago and it was unboxed in my house. I noticed the vent grooves were very dirty so I ran my finger across it and it was either gray dust or powder. Before plugging it in, I wanted to make sure what I saw wasn't also inside the vent so I removed the panel and it is like new. I was relieved, but then noticed the compressor has a hardball sized discoloration on it, like it faded to grey. Unless it's the lighting in your video, what I'm trying to describe is pretty much like yours, but my faded area has some black spots in it the size of a pea. I have looked at dozens of compressor images online (can't find the exact replacement part) and they are all shiny and pure black. I'm wondering if this is not a brand new freezer after all.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 года назад
First you can look at the tag inside the freezer and there will generally be a date code of manufacture. These sit in dirty factories and are test run to make sure they work, so dust isn't a huge concern. Lastly there is little care taken when painting the compressor as virtually no one looks at it. They paint them as fast and careless as possible just so they're not bare steel.
@suemarie6032
@suemarie6032 4 года назад
@@sixtyfiveford Thank you for the prompt reply. There isn't anything inside. There is a bar code sticker with a batch # on the outside back and I'm assuming the serial # is the long one under it. (VL025003W01JLD1PVS20120). I don't see a date in there. Freezers are hard to come by since Covid started and many sites are on back order. This one particular site keeps changing from dates in Oct, then Dec. then to Nov. I just don't know where they are getting them from. I was told I wouldn't have one until the beginning of Nov. and then last week they said mine was in. This doesn't look like a sloppy paint job on the compressor, that's why I wonder about the discoloring. I hope it was a return and they re-sold it as new instead of open box. I don't need someone else's problems. lol

I was trying to take apart an old Harbor Freight butterfly impact wrench, but it seems like it had a one way assembly on the end plate, which must be pressed in, with no way to take it apart non destructively. I didn't take the hammer to it like you were doing in this video, because I wanted to see if it was simply some gummed up vanes in the air motor. I've concluded there's no way to take it apart, but thought there must have been someone out in RU-vid land that's tried before. Doesn't seem like it though, because the only videos I could find were the regular pistol grip type impact wrenches.

I started working in Freezer/Fridge/A/C department at Whirlpool at age 18. I lifted two to three compressors every minute all day long depending on our assembly line speed. Union and corp fight over line speed constantly but generally it was about 1800-2000 units a shift depending on the model so its a hell of a work out trust me. They eventually set up a lift that raised the entire skid up to ease your lifting them onto the assembly line and then added a cable lift system too, all long after I went to another dept of course..lol The compressor is what makes these units so heavy, without a compressor inside them the box itself weighs very little. Fair warning, gets very long here here folks sorry: Once you notice a freezer thumping extra hard at the end of its cycle (even occasionally), start looking for a new unit asap. Compressors that thump hard may go one more cycle or it may cycle fine over many years, fact is there's no way to know when it will actually die out honestly speaking. That real hard thump at the cycles end is caused by a busted spring mount inside the compressor, see (4) springs down inside bottom in this video some just have 3 springs but as soon as one more spring fails its a done deal folks. Years ago we manufactured our own Whirlpool compressors in house & the wire the support springs were made from was higher grade steel so they took many decades to fail unlike today where most craps imported with the cheapest price point in mind so their just cheap low grade steel now. With "Planned Obsolescence" at the top of their requirement its how things will remain only worse. Mine started failing in this manor when Covid first hit the US shores & we're still waiting for a new family size upright frost free freezer. I was finally able to order one 3 weeks ago and its supposed to be here in 10 days. They ran out within minutes so act damn fast if your looking today and spot on in stock. I had every local/online home/appliance store email/text me if they came back in stock just to get one. Fingers crossed our 6 yr old Whirlpool freezer is still going, It bangs hard too. Even with my discount I still ordered a GE freezer because my $1400 Whirlpool was only 6yrs old and giving up the ghost, its just bullshit but since I know GE and everyone else as a matter of fact makes a far superior product since Whirlpool began assembling its appliances in Mexico, mostly out of Chinese parts too boot. This freezer here has a p.o.s China made compressor, the seals on Whirlpools leak so bad they get moisture build up constantly so black mold grows in/on/around/under Whirlpool freezers doors and after replacing all the seals they will just do it again within 2yrs & Whirlpool won't upgrade their seals. Whirlpool products are just total shit today folks, so run forest ruuun! The GE I ordered has the Japanese Panasonic compressor, the best compressors in the industry. Don't just look inside for pretty lights/shelves folks, turn that unit around and peek in the backside at what brand its compressor was used in it. Thats what actually counts more than anything else on a Fridge/freezer/AC unit as thats what sends them to the dump. Be safe, sorry so long here folks.

Most refrigeration compressors aren't worth the effort and time to fix them up, refrigeration compressors are considered "throwaway" compressors. At least from what i've heard and read from my classes in HVAC.

There's only the refrigerant gas and once you puncture the tubes (when taking it out of the fridge) it will evaporate and release any pressure there might be in a fairly controlled manner, so nothing really dangerous.

My grandparents have a refrigerator that still runs from the 50's, where do I get one of those compressors?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 7 лет назад
Old fridges are built like tanks. I picked up a 1941 fridge a few years back from and auction. No one else wanted it. I plugged it in and started right up and ran great. Still works great and uses 1/3 the electricity my modern fridge uses.
@JasonWW2000
@JasonWW2000 7 лет назад
rwdplz1 You may have to convert to a newer style compressor. It's doubtful you would recharge it with the old R12 and the newer refrigerants work better with the newer compressors.
@XanCraft21

sixtyfiveford sounds like someone replaced the compressor in that 1941s fridge with a freon pumping system like in the air conditioning in your house.

You have to have the model number, serial number, and manufacturer of the fridge. There should be a metal data plate somewhere on that unit, hopefully it isnt tarnished so badly you can still read the numbers and letters. Once you have that info all it takes is looking on Ebay for a new compressor. You will probably have to convert to a new refrigerant like R-134a or R-404A though so dont worry about finding a compressor that runs on R-12 or R-22. Going online to the compressor manufacturer or calling the 1-800 number for the parts department they will be able to cross you over to a replacement compressor. Then find a refrigeration tech or AC tech and have him install the new compressor and filter drier. It takes a special set of tools and gauges and EPA certification to buy refrigerant, not sure about just a compressor but probably so. Pay a guy some cash and its an easy weekend job.

The Grip 6 has been very nice. I almost wish the belt had give or a very very firm elastic to take up slack while sitting but return to the same tension while standing. The hollow chamber between the head and the line is a muffler. Keeps the condensation lines behind the fridge from buzzing loudly. The "flapper valves" are called reed valves. That oil is pretty thin compared to what automotive AC systems use.

Why not? We know that normally Air has Oxygen, Nitrogen, water and very little of R22. So, if we remove much of Oxygen, N2, and H2O, we are left with a content which is dominated by R22, but it is then still Air.

Great video. Ever wonder why these are so much more reliable than A/C compressors in cars? Rather than using an electric motor to power the compressor, the car compressor is powered by the engine via a fan belt around the compressor pulley. That pulley is connected to a shaft that goes into the compressor. As it enters the compressor, it needs a seal and that seal can eventually fail letting the refrigerant out. The fridge compressor has the motor inside so it doesn't need a shaft to run it. All it needs is two wires. While they're sealed, the wires aren't rotating so the seals will last indefinitely.

I just lost my compressor in a 3 year old Kenmore Elite refrigerator and was turned down on warranty because they said it didn't say it was a 5 year warranty on my owners manual. Well, it said nothing about the compressor, but the internet says it was 5 years. But Sears got back with me and said that some compressors only have one year unless it says so on the owners manual. When I bought it, they told me the elite has better components in the refrigerator. But I guess not the most expensive part. Wow. Be careful what you buy. But it is an LG compressor, and a man said he may be able to help me. But we will see. I got mi e from Sears, but Sears really is just an internet company now, and their employees just work out of their phone. So don't but there unless it's in writing. Out 3 grand. I'm trying to decide if the replacement of the compressor is better than buying a new refrigerator.
