I hope that this becomes a regular series of videos. I would also love to see BRP become a series of books/supplements like GURPS. And also while I'm on this soapbox, I wouldn't mind seeing a re-issued Magic World (Stormbringer/Elric, minus the IP)...whatever new name is chosen. I think Chaosium has its work cut out for them (kidding, sort of). 🍻⚔
Although I love RuneQuest and Call of Cthulhu, I was a bit skeptical about BRP, when I got it a dew days ago, knowing the system is quite old. But boy was I wrong. This is perhaps THE universal (medium-crunch) roleplaying game, with decades of rpg experience fused into one easy, intuitive, streamlined, but expandable system. It only has about 250 pages, but these pages are brimfull of ideas, rule suggestions, useful lists and tables, creature data, possible adaptations to the most diverse gaming worlds, different magic and power systems,... Just reading through the pages inspired me to many new ideas for playing.
Great update to the previous edition, it does look beautiful. However I would have preferred it to have some of the CoC 7E rules included as bolt-on options, it's unusual that they never did this. However it's still good to see a new edition of the BGB.
I recieved my copy ordered off ofamazon today, and it's a gorgeous well made book in addition to covering so much detail in such depth. it cost more than your usual D&D book, but not only is it 3x as much content, but the quality of the binding and pages is QUITE impressive.
From wen I was a kid the book series by Tamora Pierce set in Tortall and that world (Starting with the Lioness series) was what got me really into fantasy. As a young girl the protagonists were always particularly inspiring. I’ve thought that Pendragon rules would suit that world really well. I’d love to see it made into a RPG.
I don't think there is (please correct me if I'm wrong), but I think it could easily be house ruled. In CoC 7e (these are the rules I'm most familiar with) I might allow a helping roll and if it is a success I would award a bonus die to the roll that was assisted (penalty if the helper failed) and in case of an extreme success I might give 2 bonus dice. This is what I would experiment with initially if I wanted to house rule it. In case of runequest where +X% is actually used you can doo +5%, +10%, +15% or something similar depending on the helping roll (or - those % if failed) instead of bonus/penalty dice.
@@S0nyb1ack I see it as a series of help rolls. It's an interesting mechanism but honestly prefer the more intuitive COC roll under your skill percentage as the main mechanism
@keithparker1346 As I said I think it can be home brewed within COC roll under system, but instead of giving a numerical bonus like in traveller you could give out bonus/penalty dice :)
I definitely agree that the BRP is the best engine with which to play and/or work. However, I really wish there was a version of the hardbound book that used only a limited amount of inconspicuous black-and-white artwork on a matte white or natural page. No offense to the art or the artists, but I have a lot of trouble working with these rule books when there is so much edge-to-edge, high-intensity, full color artwork. I do appreciate that one can turn off the layers for the PDF version; but, I'm going to have to work from a printout of the SRD now...less than ideal.
