What's Inside This Bargain 6-Core Gaming PC I Found At CEX?

What a bargain! Today we're taking a look at this old school socket 2011 gaming PC. Once a high end beast this used performance system was found online for less than £300. So what's inside this 6 core, 12 threaded behemoth, and more importantly, can it game in 2019?
Thanks for watching :)

In my opinion, this guy deserves to be more popular than Linus Tech Tips or Austin Evans. No thumbnails with someone with their jaw detached from their skull with hands on their face, and the videos just feel nicer and less mass produced and view grabbing. I'm very glad that I found this channel.

RGHD is great channel. But, it lacks “Enthusiasm”, i would say. Also, he posts videos about old gpus. Which is great but. again, not attractive for enthusiasts and high-end budget ppl. Amazing deal! My i7 3770k @ 4.5ghz, 16GB of Dominator Platinum on an Asus Sabertooth Z77 with an Asus Strix GTX 980 are still smashing 1080p 60+ Ultra on everything I throw at it. I built this system to game/edit for 5 years and it's already given me 6+ with only a Corsair AIO CPU cooler replacement needed. I don't really play any BRAND new games on it so most of everything I play runs at 100+ FPS unlocked or 60 locked on my 144hz Zowie monitor. Even the RAID 0 WD Blacks I put in this thing for 2TB of game storage are still keeping up with my SSD's for game load times ( GTA V- 24s on SSD vs 32 on R0 HDD). If you built a PC in late 2012-2013 with premium parts you still don't even need to upgrade yet.

I mean heck, I knew of two OCZ drives relatives used and both are dead after under three years of mild usage while literally any Samsung, Micron, Kingston, Hynix and even No-Name China SSDs and even most HDDs (including Seagate) live on seemingly forever under much more load which (no joke) includes more than 20 drives, some bought in as early as 2012 and used daily. The PSU shroud, fan filters, the intake panel, primitive cable routing, sound dampening, removable hard drive brackets and fan support. It even supported water cooling albeit as an outside extension. All this from a base released in 2005. I held on to mine for a decade before I downsized.

I built a budget rig which i bought primarily with parts from CEX. Apart from case and PSU which i got cheap from ebay. It cost me 261 GBP, i7 4790k, GTX 780 OC, 16GB FuryX Red 2400Mhz, 1 TB 7200 RPM, z97Xtreme Game+. Not bad all things considered, even the dated GPU is quite a beast still considering it cost under 70 pounds, but i'm going to relist it for slightly higher and go with a GTX 980, which you can get for a 100 GBP if you shop around :D While I know i could have probably gotten it slightly cheaper if i bought it as a bundle like you did, but I do not trust or want to gamble with someone else's setups. It's easier for me to get it in parts and if I do get a bad apple of a part, i can just swap it out individually and carry on testing each and every component seperately. I don't particularly trust the fact that any of the CEX employees have done extensive stress-tests on the whole system, probably just booted it on - it loads up.. Clean it, store it, send it. Too much of a gamble though it can be cheaper, but not always.

If i remember there is no need to delid. Ditch that case for a watercooling friendly case, I would really love to see the AeroCool P7-C1 used as it is not to expensive and IMO looks amazing without trying too hard. I'm still running a very similar system. 4930k @ 4.3ghz (stable since 2014) on a Rampage IV Gene, 16gb of that samsung wonder ram from 2011, and a GTX 670. Since then I've added additional SSDs and upgraded GPUs to SLI 670s> 780ti> 980ti> 1080ti and it absolutely rips today.

Nice write-up. Back in early 2016, I built a 2 cpu Xeon E2667 v2 25M Cache, 3.30 GHz, 4.0ghz turbo rig with 128gb RAM in an S2600cp motherboard and with an overclocked 1070ti card (edit: 1070ti added in 2018). With 16 cores / 32 threads and 50MB total cache over both chips, it is still a (dual) socket 2011 beast today and my main PC.

How did you get a 1070ti in early 2016 when it didn't launch until late 2017?

@@jtenorj Simple: I didn't. That wasn't the original video card. I'll edit to clarify. Thanks for the correction.

I have an idea for a video. A question that needs answering in current context. If you have a GPU that is not quite cutting it, can you push off a big $ upgrade by hunting up another of the same type cheap, and running dual. Proformance may be game dependent to an extent, and it will depend on having a SLI capable motherboard.

I was rocking the ASUS X99 Mobo, socket 2011-v3 until recently with the i7-6850K CPU + 32GB of RAM. I upgraded to the Ryzen R7-3800x, probably not much of an upgrade but I'm sporting the Gigaabyte Aorus Master Mobo now with a 2TB NVMe SSD, Gen4. Still using my original ASUS Strix GTX 1080 Ti GPU as I see no need to upgrade that just yet.

I managed to pick something slightly similar up about 3 months ago, i7 975 extreme on a gigbyte board, with 12gb of ram and a gtx980 only mine had 2x2tb hdds in raid 0, was only $200 from an office liquidation store, saw the black i7 sticker and shut my mouth when asking about it, the sales person just said ohh yeah its only got a first gen i7 in it but it has a weird 6 ram stick arrangement. I paid the money and ran away with it as fast as i could.

I'm glad I spent the extra money when I built my computer. 3930k with a rampage iv formula and crossfire 7970 gpus. Have since upgraded to a 980ti and now a 2080. Still runs everything I throw at it. Building a system to be future proof is usually a pointless exercise but with this CPU future proof it certainly was

I'm very much pleased with my chinese X79 motherboard in combination with an (used) Xeon E5-2680v2, 32 GB DDR3 and a RTX 2060. I've bought these components over the course of 1,5 years and am very pleased with the results. There's no overclocking the E5-2680v2, but since performance is still at par with a stock i7-8700k, I'm not in need of any overclocking anytime soon.

i did a similar thing just recently....i picked up a cheap i7 pc from a business auction for £85, turned out to have 32gb ddr3, i7, gtx670, gigabyte mb and artic cooler....ended up stripping it and built a gaming pc with it in a new case, with a water cooler and rgb....works a treat and has only cost me around £200....so there are bargains out there if you are prepared to look...

Arctic cooler. Not an antec cooler. Maxwell gpus are made for overclocking btw. And i can't recall you mentioned memory speed? Maybe I missed that. But I'm curios to see the result after a memory overclock. I bet you cold squeeze much more of that sweet old system.

My gaming PC is actually still my Sk2011 machine. Im using a 4930K 32GB ram, 2x GTX780ti cards. Going to upgrade the GPU shortly. Just got a 4K monitor today and those cards dont cut it anymore. But i see no point upgrading the CPU or anything else. I actually bought a identical motherboard to mine few years back for a steal so ive got a spare should i need it.

Feels like I am being spoken to personally here: Bought a 3930k and Asus Rampage IV Formula in 2011 /w 16 gigs gskill ram, everyone I knew thought that I made a huge mistake - even if the machine was meant to be a workstation first they all said I should have gone for an i7 2600k and saved some cash for future upgrades. Yet here I am in 2019 maxing everything out with a modern-ish Titan X Maxwell (bought used for $285 in 2018). Life's good when the gamble pays off!

I have the exact case, I love it, it was free, it was thrown away because of a bad video card, installed a Q9650, radeon RX590, only 8gb of DDR2 , ASUS P5Q-E MB, runs my 65" TV , google maps is the only stresses the system, I do play land warrior, requirement was a Pentium II 400Mz and a 128Mb video card. back to the case, it looks great, very quiet, can not hear any of the fans and it was free

I recently picked up an Ivy Bridge system as well and it's my main gaming rig now. Throw a Xeon in there and fill the RAM slots, you'll have quad channel memory for some insane memory bandwidth. Something like 60 gigabytes a second! I'm loving the Xeon e5-1650 v2 in mine, still holds up very well even at stock speeds.
