@@GadgetClass Well I think not. Just think about how slow and hard it would be to manufacture these cameras by hand in very large numbers.

If by "external device" you mean attaching it to another circuit, it's barely possible. Phone camera pinouts have no standardization, thus making it useless to make another device for the module. In the event that the manufacturer publicizes the pin diagram for the camera's connector, you could produce a PCB for it, albeit the sheer amount of pins you'd need to wire up would make it almost pointless to do.

If they both have the same sensor then yes, otherwise the underneath drivers are different.
