What's it like having a parent in prison? 

I was 7 when my dad went to prison he got out when I was 16 it's hard if anybody got a parent in jail I feel your pain 💯

My dad went to go jail last week, 18 years of my life he was there for me . It most painful feeling ever I miss him so much.

I have to say the hardest thing about my dad going to prison was watching how much pain my mom had to go through

I’m so glad somebody has finally posted this. It’s not really talked about and there is a very prominent stigma about having a parent in prison; and that’s very sad. I’m just happy there are groups and stuff like this in the world; and that it is being acknowledged as a full-fledged problem.

I was six when my mother was incarcerated I was 18 when she was finally released absolutely love the fact that awareness is being raised about children with incarcerated parents

Thank you for raising awareness. Any loss of a parent is traumatic, let alone not being able to speak about it, or potentially being ostracised for speaking about why.

My father had been taken away from me for about 10 months now, and the worst part is I still don’t know the reason why, and where the hell he is, and I’m not allowed to write a single letter or send a simple message. We had a fight before he was caught and I don’t even have the chance to say I am sorry and I love him so much. The chance of meeting him in person before I go to college seems impossible. Jesus how can I carry on? How am I supposed to live without him?

We are all brave ❤ I remember my dad got locked up while I lived with my mom , he was bettering himself changing himself for me and his family and while he was in the process of doing so they raided and took him . he's only been in for 4 years and he's looking forward to 20 its really hard but I mean what can we do about it , nothing At the end of the day each one of us are brave for holding in the pain through the glass window or over the recorded phone calls . my mom went to jail today. i had lots of absents from school when i was in KINDERGARTEN, i had lice twice that year and had to redo it. yet they’ve still held a grudge and arrested her today. it’s so hard and i can’t bare to know she’s there all day every day. thank god it’s only 5 days, her mugshot broke me down and destroyed me. she looked so sad..and even thinking about it brings me to tears, i miss her so much

I was one when my dad got sentenced to 25 years , I’m 16 at the moment and it’s been hard growing up surrounded by Friends with the picture perfect family as they won’t ever really be able to understand me. I live in an area where it’s so rare to have a parent in jail so it makes me feel uncomfortable ever opening up about it , the pain of not being able to call him when I’m feeling sad or calling him to tell him what I’ve done with my day. But I’m so glad there is people out there who understand me as I’ve seen in some of the comments which makes me feel a lot better about the situation

What a lot of people don’t understand is not all people that are going or are in prison are bad people, it is a heartbreaking thing to go through for the families 😞

my mother was in prison for most of my childhood. she’s a drug addict, she’s stolen from my grandparents, from me. she gets out and acts like i’m supposed to forgive her for everything she’s done and i’m just supposed to forget about the times the police would barge into our house and arrest her. it’s traumatizing. i’m glad she’s out and is doing better. but me forgiving her will probably never happen.

My mom and dad was arrested when I was five. My mom served 2 years and my dad did 8 I was 13 when he was released. I seen him about 1 time every couple of years and talked on the phone maybe 1 or 2 times a month for about 1 minute . Hello my name is Kristie . I'm from America and my boyfriend of 3 years is in prison . He was arrested Dec 2018 and spent a year n jail all of last year . And he got transferred to prison the before his birthday Oct 10 . He will be getting out the end of July-early August of this year . My son looks to him as a father figure . My boyfriend raised him as his own since he was a barely 2 . He's 5 now . And let me just say that it's been hard for all of us . I have never dealt with anything like this before and I felt many different emotions thru out the year . It was especially hard for my boy , cause he is so young and he went from seeing him everyday to not seeing him at all except for visits . And he calls every day to check on us . But it was so hard and I couldn't help but get emotional along with this story cause me and my son knows exactly how this feels . im 48 and my mom went to prison for life when i was 11 so most of my life and it looks like she wont get out , as ive gotten older especially the last 5 or 10 years ive thought i would have had a better life if i had no contact with her at all, because of the appeal process tho in the first 10 years or so everyone thought she might have a chance to get out but she lost all the appeals , sometimes i wonder what id be like if she never went to prison and i had a normal life , i think if a child has a parent serving a life sentence it would benefit the child to have no contact and try to live life without the parent and hopefully move on without them. if the parent has a outdate within 5years or so it might be ok to have contact depends on the child tho , but bottom line is dont do drugs if u have kids

My dad was called on the hearing right now Friday June 26,2020, I don't know the whole story and didn't know what happened after the hearing but he went home I am praying that he won't go to prison, I don't what year but it is a long time ago I think it is year 2012 I don't know the whole story but I think he accidentally killed a guy with a van because he was drunk😢 I don't know if he has been carnap because my father went naked going to street that time he said he is lucky because the police came but he was sent to prison and a day has passed a mayor came to the prison and saw my dad the mayor was our relative, and my dad got release, and as months passed by a police came to our house saying he has warrant of arrest to my dad, my grandma told to the police he was not at home and he was at different place (my grandma lied) but in march 2020 a police came to our house saying that my dad should come with them in the prison, well one of our relatives bail him out, and June 14, 2020 a police came to our house he said the hearing will be on June 26, 2020 right now, I am praying that, my dad shouldn't go to prison, because he already changed.

Well its so hard My mom and dad were in trouble for something they didn’t do ( im not going to get into details) and because they cant take both parents at the same time My dad got into prison first for two years ( aka worst two years of my WHOLE LIFE) i had an older brother who tortured me and my mom and sister he was a drug addict he almost killed me once and i forgave him . We were always staying at friends houses cuz he dumped us (his family) in front of the whole neighborhood . So that his shitty friends and girlfriends can come get drunk and high with him . He was taking my moms money by threatening her . My mom got him into jail 6 times but every time she forgave him and thought he changed . But .... the same day he’d come out he would hurt her so bad and other things (im cant breathe properly just thinking about this) Then after those two years where i never slept well eat well or felt safe or okay or happy My dad got out Now my mom is in prison It sucks so bad Im safe now with my dad but my mom was closer to me I feel lonely Idk why i said this But i needed to get it out of my chest

I was 1 when my dad went into jail for 18 years. I moved away with my mum and asked to see him when I was 8 and I wasn’t allowed..I kept trying until 12 and was finally allowed to meet him and he has done so well. Family support really helps prisoners stay on track and my dad is doing so well and fighting the last 5 years of his sentence 🥺
