In this episode of The Lombok Life, we find out what it's like in the Gilis right now. The Gilis (Gili T, Gili Meno and Gili Air) are three beautiful islands in Lombok. They are tropical paradise and usually, they would be filled with tourists travelling from all over the world. However, after the Covid-19 pandemic, everything has changed.
So, what's it like to travel to the Gilis right now? What's it like to visit a tropical paradise with no tourists?

I'm sorry this took so long guys...perhaps I shouldn't have said weekly vlogs 😂 anyway, I hope you enjoy this! I put A LOT of work into this one - it's a reflection of the type of stuff I want to make going forward on this channel. Thanks so much for being here and taking the time to watch :) it means a lot to me 👊

Loved the vid Josh. Great production. I especially liked the interaction with the locals/ Pandemic impacts. Was lucky to spend a month in late 2019 in Lombok and Gili T. Meno and Air are on my bucket list. I'm very impressed by the healing of the sea life and the optimism of the businesses. I was thinking about Penang as my first post pandemic travel but now I'm flipped. Coming from USA is still a hurdle. If I get my nerve up, I'll lookup Musa for a PADI.

@@jeffdrew7456 thank you so much Jeff - really appreciate you taking the time to watch and giving valuable feedback :) I definitely think this is a style I want to pursue going forward 👍🏻 I think having insight from people who actually live here adds a lot, if you compared it with just me walking around the island and vlogging haha. Glad to hear you're looking at getting out here when possible! Musa and the team at Blue Marine were so good - definitely worth doing mate 😁

That... was.... AMAZING! Worth the wait too hehehe, and sorry I didn't get a chance until now to watch it. Having spent a week in Gili Trawangan in 2019, we fell in love with the place and wish we had more time to explore the other islands too. The impact of tourism was evident when we were there, so much dead coral and rubbish in the oceans so it is so heart warming to hear that the ecosystem has had a chance to begin regeneration. It is heart breaking to hear that the people who live and work there have had little to no income and many shops have had to close, but yet you have told a beautiful story of people coming together as a community to support one another. I do love the idea of a digital nomad visa and hope that is something they look into, because you have definitely sold the the lifestyle. You have captured so much in this one, seriously this has been one of your best videos yet!
@JoshEdwardsFilms
@JoshEdwardsFilms 3 года назад
Thank you soo much Emmy 😁🙏🏻 really appreciate the feedback! Yeah I am really happy with this one and definitely feel like it's the right style for me. I loved shooting it so, hopefully can continue to do more with the videos going forward. Lots more still to learn! And hopefully they won't all be an hour long haha...it was a lot of editing. I think the digital nomad visa is a great idea and I know its been discussed by the government...it'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Sometimes these changes in law and legislation can take a long time in Indonesia but the pandemic has really changed a lot in terms of how people work remotely and online, as well as tourism. I think Indonesia knows that 'mass tourism' and 'fast tourism' is going to take a fair while to bounce back so they are looking at viable alternatives to help stabilise the industry that's been suffering so much

Such a great video documenting the lives of native people on Gili Air during lockdown! Crazy how their lives have changed so much and just how much they rely on tourism. Thank you very much Liam, really appreciate you taking the time to watch 🙏🏻 yeah it's a really tricky balance! Incredible video Josh, it’s great seeing you approach these travels videos in more of a documentary-style. A lot of travel content ends up feeling quite shallow these days (compared to the greats like Bourdain or Palin), so it’s great to see you digging into the places you go and people you meet along the way. Awesome job mate 👍

Thanks so much mate - nail firmly on the head with this comment! Firstly, appreciate you taking the time to watch such a long one haha...they're not all going to be this long (hopefully) 😂 I completely agree - I've found that the vast majority of 'travel content' is very shallow. Each to their own and it obviously works for the algorithms etc...but that's not my mission here. I really want to keep pursuing this type of stuff and hopefully, when someone watches a video of mine they come away with a better understanding of the place. I want to try educate & entertain at the same time...still very much work in progress but super excited about the next few years! Bourdain and Palin have both been huge inspirations. I could watch their stuff all day (and often do haha)

Excellent piece of work .. I feel sorry for those people who rely their livelihood on tourism though on the other hand the pandemic also gives a break to the underwater ecosystem surrounding the island. Hope tourists will gradually return to the island soon and that tourism can be managed in a sustainable way moving forward.

The biggest problem with the Gilis is they are not very nice to local tourists. It used to be the same in Bali but they learned a lot after the Bali bombings when the number of foreign visitors dropped drastically. The treatments that I received as local tourist were completely different before and after. I hope Gilis can learn the same lesson and be nicer to local tourists after the pandemics.
@JoshEdwardsFilms
@JoshEdwardsFilms 2 года назад
Sounds like a valid point. I think they have definitely realised the value of local tourism over the past 2 years. It's just a question of whether they can persuade more local tourists to leave the comforts of Bali (big shopping malls and superior hotels) to come for a few days. Depends what each person is looking for in their holiday I guess. Thanks for taking the time to watch :)

Interested to see this doc… we were just there - spent Christmas in Senggigi on Lombok and for the New Year holiday we were on Gili Air for a while. Happy to say things are coming back slowly slowly. We had plenty of choices where to eat, where to stay and where to shop. There were still some places empty and shuttered but tourism is returning gradually. I’m back in the US now but only long enough to get rid of my stuff here. I have my return ticket already.

Haha nice, Noah. Sounds like you really enjoyed your visit! I've been back a few times since and have to say I'm very impressed with how quickly they've bounced back. As you said, some places still shuttered and left for the island to reclaim...most likely those businesses ain't coming back, sadly. But on the whole, the island (all three, actually) feel like they've pretty much gotten back toward the norm. Will be there in a few days to show my dad around. Thanks for watching! Yes some of the best scuba diving anywhere in Indo with great viz, clear water, and plenty to see, with the plus of an awesome island and its people. We first went to Lombok because we saw your videos and instantly wanted to go there. It's now one of our favourite places in the world and the place we will always go back to. It must be wonderful to experience the Gili's like this and have it all to yourself but it's so sad to see how everyone is struggling. It looks so surreal in a beautiful but also a scary/apocalyptic way. When we visited, the corals seemed destroyed and sea life was at a minimum, we were a bit disappointed to see how the nature was being affected by tourism so it's great to hear that this period of time is helping it to recover and hopefully when it reopens it will focus on conservation and eco friendly tourism! We have also heard from our friend who own a business in Lombok how hard it has been. Once travel happens again we want to be on the first plane over there! Thank you for making this video.

This was a very good video about the current situation. I have been here for awhile and I know what it’s like. I understand that tourism was a way to make money but I did see the pollution and destruction of the island and coral. I think this was awake up call to be more loving and natural,and stop destroying this beautiful planet! I try everyday to help the local folks learn and stop throwing the plastic everywhere. It seems they just don’t understand! So the only solution is to make the petrochemical companies use oil that is non toxic and breaks down like a banana leaf. Such a nice dream yeh! Peace

Thanks Dennis, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch mate :) I am sure you will know more than me having been there for a while! I do hope that the Gili islands can make this change permanent. A better balance between tourism and protecting the environment. You are completely correct. At the end of the day, the only long term solution to all of this is to educate the younger generations and instil better habits and awareness while they're in school. Yes, it would also be great if those companies use non toxic oil that easily breaks down but don't hold your breath...they are only interested in money

is there car hire on lombok and how much please. Also how many days would you need to see the main attractions on the island? thanks
@JoshEdwardsFilms
@JoshEdwardsFilms Год назад
Hi Ian, sorry for my slightly delayed reply - yes. Plenty of car hire available! I would say about 250,000 - 350,000idr per day. And that's a good question. I've lived here 2 years and still feel that there's more to discover haha...I would say at a big push, maybe a week. But you'll be rushing around. 2 weeks minimum really lets you relax a little and enjoy the island. The longer the better, really :)

Trawangan, Meno and Air are incredibly overated. I could not think of any place worse than a "tourist hot spot" and all that goes with that. With few people around - yeah, pretty chill place. I went to Gilli Air in 1983. There was one place to stay called "Gilli Indah". Me and my nephew were the only bules. We met a Javanese traveller there. When we told him we were going to Flores he told us about Pantai Waiciecu near Labuhanbajo. When we got there there was just one losmen, the Mutiara, near the port - it's still there but Labuhanbajo has been transformed. We walked around to coast to the beach. It was unbelievably beautiful. We spent the day there. God knows what it would be like now. You make good videos. You have an eye for what looks good. I love Indonesia and Indonesians are gregarious and hospitable - I married one. Lucky me. I made my first trip through Indonesia (Timor to Jakarta) in 1970. Great place to travel. Regards

It depends what you're after I guess, but yeah I tend to agree with you. Especially in the busy peak season. We felt lucky in some ways to have the islands like that - so quiet. Labuan Bajo sounds like its undergone a MASSIVE transformation, even from when I was there in 2017...I need to go back and see what's happening. Thanks for the kind words Steven, I appreciate you taking the time to watch. Feel very lucky waking up here every morning! Cheers

I just wanted to come back to it and saw that you moved there. Really cool! Will watch your other videos for sure. And also quiet sad to see, because die situation in lombok wasn't really good even before the pandemic. Can't imagine how it is now. Do you know a good way to donate some money there that gets to the locals? Thanks!

But right now for sure, it's pretty tough. Lombok obviously had the whole earthquake situation in 2018 and now the pandemic...it is not easy. But they'll bounce back. In terms of donating money, let me see if I can find out any information. It's a bit tricky! This was such a great video. Love that you talked to the locals about what it all meant to them. I was on Gili Air in 1999 and again in 2001. It was so beautiful. There were no problems with garbage and the fish were plentiful. It seems things went downhill and it’s so sad. The footage of all of those people getting off the boats is crazy. It’s so great to see the coral and the fish making a comeback but so sad to see the locals losing their livelihoods. I hope they can find a balance to this when things return to ‘normal’. I’ll never forget staying in the Legend Bar and watching the phosphorescence in the waves under an amazing starry sky. Such a beautiful special place. Thank you for this
@JoshEdwardsFilms
@JoshEdwardsFilms 2 года назад
Loved that last line about the phosphorescence - beautiful! The Gilis are capable on conjuring up magic like that, even today. It's true - a lot has changed in recent years. Must have been quite special to have seen it in 1999 and 2001. But yeah, I do hope this pandemic acts as a marker and turning point where the balance can be better struck...time will tell, ultimately, but there are some positive signs there :) thanks very much for taking the time to watch, really appreciate it!

Thank you so much for this video. Gili Air is our favorite travel destination and I appreciate the way you made it into a documentary style video with lots of in-depth coverage of the current situation there. It's heartbreaking to see that the islanders are going through very tough times... again. The last time we were there was two months after the major earthquake in 2018 and back then we felt the situation was pretty dire but it looks like the pandemic has made a far worse impact. We can only pray that islanders will endure through these times and hope that Indonesia will open her doors again soon. Thank you once again.

It's really tough for sure. But yeah they have been here before with the earthquake a few years previous and other incidents such as the Bali bombings etc. Sometimes, tourists disappear and business really drops off. It is tough but the people have a great attitude and adapt really quickly. It will bounce back for sure - as soon as Indonesia is open again (hopefully sooner rather than later) I know so many people who will be coming back here!
