Jeff Bernsen and Efraim Primero, who work at Interfaith Sanctuary, keep things running smoothly at the night shelter. The facility can accommodate up to 165 people a night.

I have managed homeless shelters and treatment centers for the Salvation Army and I enjoy helping homeless people and anyone associated with legal obligations make progress and watch them grow. I have always loved reaching out to people that nobody wants anything to do with.

How did you get into a management position there? Just started volunteering at a Salvation Army shelter and am thinking about maybe working my way into management eventually

I get these comments. I’ve run a shelter for about 3 years now and I have to say it is extraordinarily tough to live in a shelter. I have personally seen people get attacked, robbed and abused by other clients. I’ve also seen staff mistreat and make fun of people. It’s easy to fall into as some clients become your weird uncles at thanksgiving except you see them 40 hours a week. As a manager I took a lot of time to make sure my staff treated people with respect, it can reciprocate and everyone has a better time. I’ve seen some serious horror stories but it can always overshadow the people that get into treatment or housing. My advice if anyone wants to work in this field is be professional consistent and kind. Don’t take anything personally ever. Also, don’t act like a cop and don’t act like a client.

I have BEEN in the shelter and I haven’t seen any violence, but I definitely got stolen from by a resident, but it was while I was in quarantine because I was in testing for Covid and that was back when the test took 10 days to see if it was positive or not but that is very true. A lot of the people who worked at the shelters were residence themselves and depending on how they get trained, they act like cops, or they take things personal, and they were literally a handful out of the dozens who work there were actually kind and co considerate, and talk to us like humans. I mean, even while I was staying there, I was sick because you get sick of the shelter, because the hygiene isn’t always up to par but I had to remind them to get me breakfast lunch and dinner while sick and was given medicine pills that don’t work my body responds to NyQuil and Day quick and unfortunately the front desk women had other things to do than worry about me being sick and stuck in a small room for 10 days 😢 Kindness was certainly lacking in the staff and even though they didn’t cause any trouble for me because I knew how to get around the personalities but just accommodating the personalities and whatever fashion they came and approached me in, but is I shouldn’t have to do that in or should anybody else because just like they deserve respect so do you and everybody deserves to be communicated to Luna respectful and effective fashion especially if people are coming out of crazy situations me, my situation wasn’t as bad as some other people have been on drugs and have come out long term abused victims.

Quarantine was super difficult to manage, I tried my best to go in there as much as possible not only to make sure they’re being fed but to at least talk to them for a little bit. I only got Covid once doing this, but that was worth it since isolation was absolutely dreadful for people. I’m glad you didn’t have to experience violence, it’s rare but happens. I guess I had to deal with those situations as they arise so I might be jaded Kindness and understanding goes a long way, I sincerely hope you are out of the shelter system.

It really is I’m in one now . Not a healthy environment I haven’t got any of my stuff stolen thank God but I do witness a lot of Violence here and staff not rly the best a lot of them Don’t care tbh Some are nice but shelters are a nightmare not a fun time definitely can tell a story though about your experience to help others . Clients abusing other clients and somehow getting away with it is just so wrong

@Semi Trucker... I'm going through this right now...the staff has issues I have nothing to do with; you can clearly see them abusing others. Bcuz I'm filing a grievance, staff is on me like stink on poo. I'm afraid to lay down & sleep. The security guards are just as bad... It's terribly sad to be going through this homeless ordeal & be treated so badly by staff...

Stayed at Sophia Way those women were crazy! I hope to never go back there. Case managers except one who worked the over night, weren't very personable or congenial. The women were thoughtless & had some personality disorders. There was also bullying, and a fight.

I also never fought anyone as a security guard but I was a guard for a pharmaceutical company. I was kinda like a receptionist and had to know a lot which is why they paid me 25 the hour. There are numerous problem with shelters - poor maintenance, bad staff, bad management, the corrupt pay backs that these shelters get; bad artificial food; and worse promoting pseudomedical services. Always investigate thoroughly these shelters and you’ll find that they aren’t as clean and running or treat people well as they like to portray.

@@EmilyGloeggler7984 I've cleaned up many homeless encampments and it is hard for me to believe that the shelters are more dangerous by any measurable objective standards. I have also lived in a van when I was a child for a year and it's not the same as being homeless on the street. We never left a mess or stayed anywhere we weren't welcome.

bullshit they won't let you stay if you have a night job. and some staff are abusive there at Interfaith Sanctuary in Boise Idaho. if you dispute any decision made by any of the staff they make it a mission to make your life more miserable than it already is. no laundry services. because theres mot really any work around the area for the homeless because noone wants to hire them or its just day labor. and noone wants to hire someone that cant afford to wash their clothes on a regular basis.
@Faerieshimmer

Wow that’s awful the staff then. all shelters should have laundry mats that’s crazy :( The guy in the video seems nice but some people are good actors. I hope the staff who are abusive get fired.
