It's a common sight these days to see folks recommend a #PlayStationVita as a retro handheld. However, it lacks some of the features we've come to appreciate in many of the newer handhelds launching today. Does it still hold up?

I completely agree about the smart phones cannot be categorize as a gaming console. Yes, you can play games on it very well but it's not the same. It's like tomatoes being a fruit. Yes, it's a fruit but I can't eat them on my waffles.

Great video! I agree with every point you discussed in the video. I bought the Ps Vita attracted by Gravity Rush, Freedom Wars, Wipeout 2048, and the Metal Gear Solid collection, and I have always been satisfied with the quality of the console's native titles. It's a shame that Sony decided to abandon the console so early, although I understand the reasons. After a few years, I started learning Japanese for fun, and after 6 years of continuous study, the Ps Vita has become the console I use the most again. There are so many Japanese titles that never made it to the West, and it's a pleasure to rediscover them after all this time. The fact that people still talk about this "failed" console after 11 years says a lot!

I've been carrying my Vita with me everyday since i bought it back in 2018. It was my phone replacement, main console, main PS4 controller, media player... it has done it all. Seriously, it might not be the master of all but sure is a jack of all trades. It gets even better when you get one of those L3-R3 trigger cases specially for remoteplay and PS1 games. Even today, i still use mine alongside my Steam Deck as an MP3 player or in situations when my steam deck isn't comfortable enough to use. I felt in love with the Vita since it released and i still love it to death. Regarding this part 18:39, i manage to finish Dead RIsing, TT The Walking Dead, Gravity Rush 2, Silent Hill 3, Fallout 4, Ace Combat Zero, Red Dead Redemption 2 and some other games i can't remember atm withouth the fancy extra triggers. It wasn't easy but man it sure was fun.

I think possibly the biggest missed oppurtunity with the vita (to me) due to its poor sales and investment by studios, is not enough PS2 were ported to it. We know it is capable with MGS HD collection and GOW collection. Even now, we are waiting for a cheap device (so not like 250 or over), that can run ps2 games. Granted, what we are looking at currently are emulation devices, therefore are mostly less optimised for the games currently (if someone makes a breakthrough with the PS2 emulation programme, it could be possible to play it on existing devices).

I bought Vita in 2019 and I still rocking with it! Best investment for a gaming for me. Speaking about store, yeah I still buy some games on Vita but the problem is some games on this system is stupid expensive right now, for example I really want to have Ys VIII because it's cool JRPG games on Vita but sadly this game got markup for physical copies on many online store and this game also still full price on PlayStation Store, so for a while now I played Ys VIII via the "dark side" until I find the cheapest and legal way to get this game.

Someone has probably said this already, but OLED Vitas with 3G allow you to replace the 3G modem with an SD card adapter internally. This means you don't have to swap a game card and SD adapter every time you want to play a physical game.
@GameXData
@GameXData 10 месяцев назад
I'm actually surprised that you're the first person I've seen mention it. It's definitely a good option. If I ever modded my Vita-1101, I'd probably opt for that method instead of SD2Vita. I only didn't include it in the video because it's only for the single model of Vita with a 3G modem and requires opening the device to install. Given the length of the video, I figured spending another minute or two explaining a niche feature wouldn't have been the best use of folks' time. But, it's definitely good to mention.

Just bought mine for 76$. Honestly the best purchase of my life. Though the library of official vita games aren't as impressive as the psp (granted the ps vita could play those games), there's still alot of gems to dig. I just think that the design and overall of the software is so much ahead of it's time and could arguably compete with current handhelds system is just so jarring. Sadly, not alot of developers or even sony themselves put alot into it, i just imagine that the next big thing of handheld console would be just like the vita with it's touchscreen, backtouch, gyro etc.

I love my vita. I modded it to boost memory. I did it on a the intenal memory on the 2000 model. I set it up so i cam switch between the SD card or a ps Vita memory card by switching in the settings. I still plan on building my physical collection up. But yeh I switch modes and reboot, and put in the physical game. I think I had to mod both internal memory and the 64 GB memory. I forget how I did it exactly cause it was a while ago. But it's possible to work around so you can still play your physical games.
@shynn-obislick3925
@shynn-obislick3925 10 месяцев назад
I think you can just switch modes and play physical games without doing the mod process multiple times like I did. I think I just did it to be sure. But I'm sure you can still play physical games but it's best to set it up with a 64 GB memory card if you want that kind of set up.

I dusted out a vita that my siblings and I were sharing not long ago. While I did replay Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror through Adrenaline and enjoyed it, I think I'm just gonna dust out my LG V20 to create a better retro handheld. As you said, transferring roms is time-consuming and so is the SD2VITA mod. Android, even if it's an older version is just more seamless and has a ton more versatility especially the V20 with the quad DAC. I'm glad I revisited the console for a short time, but ultimately it really is more fun for people who have specific Playstation needs and itches... and small hands.

Hey, so I’ve been wanting to buy a PlayStation vita recently but I want some help from people who actually own it and or have bought one. So how much do you think I should be paying for a PlayStation vita because I’ve been wanting to get the 1000 model with its cords but I’ve been seeing prices range from $99-$300 and I really don’t know, also, I don’t even know where I should get one because I feel like I’m running the risk of getting scammed sometimes because I don’t shop online all too much.
@GameXData
@GameXData Год назад
In general, most folks these days are going to be buying their consoles, games, cables, and memory through online retailers like eBay, Yahoo! Auctions Japan, or Facebook Marketplace. As long as you pay attention to seller ratings (e.g., 99% positive on eBay is solid) and only purchase listings which show actual pictures of the device with a return policy, the risk of scams is fairly low. Better yet, if you use PayPal with eBay, the buyer protection services are quite strong and usually guarantee a refund if you don't receive what was described in the listing. An alternative option would be to try as many retro game stores as you can find. However, Vitas haven't been readily available through the dozen or so stores I've been to in the past year. You'll also likely pay a small premium due to smaller stores having more overhead costs. This might be the best option though imo if you have a local spot that you'd like to support over online sellers. As for price, $200 should be your upper limit, unless you're trying to buy new in box or special edition consoles. However, I've seen plenty of Vita in decent condition selling for $100 - $150 in decent condition. Others have sold for well under $100 if some repair is needed or there's visible damage to the Vita in some way. Buying a Japanese console is also often a good idea, as those are often a bit cheaper and in good condition. The only difference compared to a North American model is that circle is coded as accept (instead of cross) throughout the system. If you're looking to buy an OLED model (1000 or 1001), buying the charging cables separately is an easy option if you find a console only listing for a great price. I've also gotten a few Vita to USB-C cables on Amazon for relatively cheap throughout the years that've worked fine. (Again, just pay attention to reviews before purchasing.) I'd also recommend leaving room in your budget for a memory card. Even if you plan to mod the system to use an SD2Vita micro SD adapter, the OLED Vita has no writeable internal storage which will make modding a bit more cumbersome. The current modding method can still work (by replacing Near with a needed program) but it'll be far less hassle to at least find a 4GB card to keep in your system. Alternatively, if you aren't looking to mod your system, I've found 16GB to be more than enough storage (Vita games run from 100 MB to 2 - 3 GB). Though, if your budget allows, buying more storage might be worthwhile.

For me it's the fact I don't play games much anymore, however my vita has gotten the most use recently, I enjoy physical media and I find I have more immersion and connection to the game when I go out and find a game in a used games store or just in general physically, I get that excitement of inserting the cartridge the first time and getting to play something new. If I hack and pirate the games they are really easy to get so they don't have that sense of value and interest to me so I quickly stop playing. Also in my vita travel case I can fit 3 games, however I usually only take one with me, this forces me to actually play that game rather than switching through games constantly or having to decide what I want to play, which often makes me just put the console back down and go do something else. I also find more old independent used game stores because of this, let's say I go away for a week or two on a trip and I spend my evenings playing a little and I complete my game, I'm forced to go and find a used game store to get another game to play if I want to play games, I have made legitimate real world friends that enjoy the same things I do because of this, and because often these people own a little independent store and I have built up a relationship with them, they will throw in a little extra something they can't sell due to condition or lack of interest when I buy from them. Physical games are great.

These days I mostly use my 512 GB hacked Vita for playing all of the PlayStation one classic I grew up with like Gran Turismo one and Gran Turismo two, twisted metal, one, two, three and four, Tony Hawk, one, two, three and four, in addition to a bunch of PSP games, Sega, 32X, Game Boy, advance, and Sega Genesis, and super Nintendo!!! it plays all of these wonderfully, with the exception that there are some gameplay advance games that just do not run worth a crap, mainly the 3-D ones… Combined with the fact that I have a bunch of arcade games and the actual arcade emulators installed, and it is a powerhouse of a device. I can play it for hours and hours and not ever find myself getting bored.!! PS1 games like Gran Turismo Gran Turismo two in vigilante eight and test drive, they all look wonderful on it !! Yesterday I was playing a little bit of need for speed, high stakes, and it looked absolutely wonderful and played great as well !! I was also blown away by how well Ridge racer and rage racer, my favorite of the Namco racers, played on the system !! The only game I found out of all the ones I have that didn’t run. The adrenaline was sledge storm, which was a snowmobile game made by EA back in the late 90s that was like Gran Turismo but for snowmobile racing.? it is an awesome game, but it is really laggy on adrenaline… and test drive off-road one doesn’t work at all??? But all of the other test drives work!!

If you got an OLED Vita with 3G you can get the best of both worlds. You can replace the 3G card inside the Vita with a custom board called the SD2VITA that replaces it with an internal MicroSD card reader. Then you can have all that extra storage while retaining the game card slot.

Anbernic's RG505 is the elephant in the room for me. That device features exactly the same OLED display, but with all the convenience that comes with a modern Android-based handheld. Fair enough that the easiest path to acquire Sony games legally is through the Vita, but there's a lot of games out there besides Playstation.
@kendarr
@kendarr 8 месяцев назад
@@dauntless0711 I agree, I have a retroid pocket 3 because I like it's format better, especially the shoulder buttons, but internally they are very similar, I'm very happy, I can play all PSP titles, all PS1, some PS2, and android games, not to mention anything retro and streaming, which I often do (and also why I like the 16:9 screen), I played sifu on it I played Batman arkham games from my PC to it, and it works really well
@dauntless0711
@dauntless0711 8 месяцев назад
@@kendarr both are solid devices depending on your needs. I mention the RG505 because I imagine the PSP and PS1 libraries are important for someone considering purchasing a Vita, and for that content the superior shoulder buttons of the RP 3+ are of minimal benefit. Naturally, the best way to play Vita games specifically is on the Vita. Its niche back touch controls mean some of its library can only be played well on a Vita, so neither the RG505 nor the RP 3+ are optimal if losing some Vita games is a deal breaker.

I like your commentary/video style. Subbed. I always had a love hate relationship with the UI. I'm really anal about organisation and there's too many apps for the folders. Can't I just have unlimited apps in a bubble on vanilla OS? Bloody Sony. Modded Vita makes things so much easier. I am not paying you Sony when you don't support devices! And remember we wouldn't have the store without backlash like you said. I still buy Japanese physical tho and the odd PAL or NTSCU game. Also, I can recommend really good thumbsstick covers which made it almost as good as a Switch for me.

It's an odd handheld to recommend in my book. It's powerful enough to make emulation of a lot of systems viable, but we have newer options that are either designed with user servicing in mind or supported decently (or just cheap enough that it won't matter to many, but that's not my thing.) It's probably a better option to some just because the store still exists, but that looks like it's on borrowed time too. I do think it's in a comfortable zone as far as its form factor goes, though. It's one of the last actually pocketable handhelds from a big name in the space.

I have to say that I do not like Sony home consoles but in the case of their portable system I have really liked them, from the PSP to the PS Vita. I have been trying to hunt a PS Vita in good shape under $100, and three weeks ago I finally got one ($90 for model PCH-1003). I have to say that my experience with this little toy has been outstanding, I love the oled screen and its size. I think that PS Vita really fills portable, something that I do not fill with the nintendo switch oled and original model. The system when is modded is a beast but as has been said in the video, better stick to just play Vita games, PSP games, and PS games. I would recommended it in 2023.

Hi, so i bought a ps vita 2000 but now that the P4G game is available on ps4, pc, and switch i feel its a bit useless. And pn top off that there is the backbone and DS controller that makes remoteplay on ps vita less usefull. Do you see any reasons why the vita is still worth it more than a backbone or DS4 conected to my phone?
@GameXData
@GameXData 5 месяцев назад
Yes, basically all the other games in the Vita's library. Persona 4 Golden is a great game, but there are a ton more games to dig into among the Vita's back catalog. If you're looking for a place to get started, I might recommend Gravity Rush, Guacamelee!, or Little Big Planet as really great action and platforming games. A lon of folks also swear by Soul Sacrifice, Freedom Wars, Steins;Gate, Killzone, or the various Final Fantasy ports. Honestly, just dig in and have fun! As for Remote Play, the strength of the Vita for streaming was always in how ridiculously solid its streaming quality has been despite it being on a 2.4G Wif-Fi connection. Since the moment the Vita lost Remote Play as an exclusive feature, it hasn't been the best method for Remote Playing any game that requires precise stick movements or triggers. That doesn't necessarily make playing on a phone a better option though, considering some of the downsides involved with those setups. If you'd like to see my full thoughts on that, I made whole video on the topic: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vf_5upgU0yc.html

Vita suffered from being ahead of its time, like a lot of Valve hardware. I still have my vita with a bunch of accessories in a box somewhere the last time I used it, I dug it out because I realized I could remote connect to my PlayStation to play Destiny 1 back in the day haha.
