What's Killing Florida's Corals? (It's Not What You Think) | Overview

Corals all over the world are threatened by warming ocean temperatures. But 30 years of data show that reefs off the Florida Keys could protect themselves from rising temperatures if they weren’t also dealing with nutrient pollution coming from land. What’s weakening these corals? Sewage. And there’s something we can do about it.

Using nitrogen for agriculture (fertilizer) is part of the problem. Excess fertilizer leeches into the water and it all ends up in the ocean in the end anyway.
@RosscoAW
@RosscoAW Год назад
Ah, yes, recycling, because recycling is an act of sustainability and climate consciousness, and totally not just a method to minimize the expenses and maximize the profits, while providing an excellent PR cover, for polluting corporations so that they can continue to pollute while making consumers feel directly responsible for their corporate pollution. Yeah, no, I'm sure recycling will have a *totally positive impact* the *exact same way* it has had a *totally positive and not at all completely destructive* impact over the past 50 years. lmao no cap point out literally a single situation that recycling has actually *improved* in the long-run, and you'll have figured out how to self-induce a delusional hallucinatory state. TL;DR: Your train of "thought" is literally why this is a problem in the first place.

It's a combination of mostly the Lake Okee discharges, outflow sewage pipes spewing bacteria(i.e. Serratia Marcescens has affected the Elkhorn/Staghorn/brain coral colonies in the Keys, as well as fertilizers/phosphates flowing into bays/ocean and beach renourishment projects which have killed sea grasses. ) Despite all that there's hope; thickets of staghorn coral growing back in South FL and the reef around deeper waters is in good shape. The corals mostly affected are stony corals. Soft corals, sea mats/polyps, gorgonians and such are everywhere so there's still a lot of life and coral in these reefs. Btw, to be fair the Dems have done very little to restore the flow of Lake Okee to the Everglades(8 yrs of the O administration and almost nothing was done; the Lake is under federal-gov control ) so they need to stfu. Most of these comments are from people who are not diving these reefs.

If reef aquarium are any guide, algae blooms can be controlled by seeding nitrification bacteria and liverocks. Saturated limewater remove CO2 from the water column by conversion into carbonate.

We're inside an oven, turning the temperature up. We'll be incinerated long before the house catches on fire; and even if that fire melts the entire oven, the ashes of the house will just fertilize plants. Five centuries from now there won't be a single identifiable trace of humanity. 10-200 meters of sea level rise will Noah's Ark-level flood every aspect of human civilization away like so much chalk scratch on a board thrown out in the rain, and a millenia from now feedback loops will have regained equilibrium and life will continue on, minus one pathogenic macroorganism that has thoroughly wasted any and all opportunity we had to earn the right to continue existing. We lost, and there's no do overs -- not at this point.

Capitalism is the issue. Global general strike is the only pathway to the only solution: global socialism that completely disintermediates capitalism and the profit-motive. As long as it's profitable for some Board Director somewhere to authorize a CEO's polluting plan(s), environmental damage will continue. How can it not? How can your "conscious consumption" do anything other than just redirect profit towards some other company with better sustainability PR who's still polluting, cutting corners, generating CO2 for profit, and existing solely for profit. lmao. honestly. If every little bit helps, it's also true that every little bit of complacent complicity -- every little bit of helping the system -- helps to literally kill the poorest and most disadvantaged who are most directly suffering climate change, in the 3rd world, before us privileged whities in the imperial core have to suffer any real damage. Every little bit you do that *is not agitating for class consciousness and revolution* is a little bit that helps the polluting executives and shareholders.

Then there is the Mississippi river disgorging all the fertilizer runoff from the lawns and agriculture of the center of the country into the Gulf of Mexico causing a dead zone the size of New Hamshire. It then enters the Florida Loop current which brings it South along the coast of Florida where it picks up more nitrogen from Florida Crystals (Big Sugar) and lawns and argiculture and brings it right across the reef systems of the Florida Keys. The problem is much bigger than Florida's poop.

Animal agriculture is responsible to a large extent. “A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use.”. -Joseph Poore, Environmental Science Researcher, University of Oxford. Glyphosate persistence in seawater Glyphosate “Roundup” is one of the most widely applied herbicides globally, but its persistence in seawater has not been reported. Water quality and pesticides in the Great Barrier Reef There has been increasing concern over the global loss of corals and seagrass, and this has been particularly well documented for the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. Nearshore water quality around reefs and seagrass beds is most heavily impacted during the summer wet season from November to March when heavy rains deliver river runoff containing excess sediments, nutrients, and pesticides. -ScienceDirect

As a horticulturist I can assure you that the industry is *fucking well aware* of the implications of glyphosate in water. It's a direct literal threat to the safety of applicators, and we're trained accordingly. The fact that that's completely separate from any sort of practical or useful environmental regulations is utterly unsurprising. It's profitable for companies to ensure their applicators stay safe from the dangerous chemical(s), because training staff is expensive; it's profitable for companies to ensure there's lack of surety and indecision about the safety of the chemical outside of their employment practices, because then they can self-regulate (ie not) and profit more with less expense, and with all of the risks borne by third-party's (residents, downstream, neighbours, etc) and the employees themselves. Believe me, capitalism is the issue, and the only solution is socialism. Anything else *is only the problem*

Florida has an enormous amount of homes connected to the water. They should really ban the use of domestic fertilizer. Especially for lawns. It is unnecessary and so damaging and terrible from every angle from it's non renewable and destructive production to the complete runoff.
@RosscoAW

And yet fertilizer is one of the largest profit-generating industries in the world. So, yeah, good luck with that happening literally ever while capitalism is still a thing. lmao

Right, because capitalism isn't directly responsible for the situation to begin with, or anything. Use some brain cells. Seriously.

My fantasy would be Florida getting told what for and how to behind the woodshed by DC: "No, this is what is going to happen: you are going to use these agriculture methods from now on. You are reducing runoff by 80% and if YOU won't fine the people for dumping, we will. There will be replanting of mangroves and incorporating them into canals. You also going to restore the canebrakes and Miami is going to become so green it will be renamed the Emerald Friggin' City. Fail any of these, and Uncle Sam's purse shuts for Social Security. How many old age homes do you have again?!
@RosscoAW
@RosscoAW Год назад
Genuinely as ignorant of a take as it is well-intentioned and misguided: very. Literally in what capitalist world would your little fantasy situation happen, and how, and why? Capitalism, ding dong, capitalism is the issue, socialism is the solution, and failing to recognize that makes *you* the problem. Not "Florida". You.

During most of it's time, Florida somewhere starting between below Gainseville and North of Orlando was under water. I'm at 140' above sea level. Come dig in my back yard, and keep digging. There is no "soil", it is made up of tiny sea shells and marine fossils. The paleo geologic maps most often show this line South as being under water. The seas were much warmer most of Earth's life after continents were roughly where they are now.

Acid spills, plastic continent, Fisnet pollution, petrols spills, radioactive polluted water, overfishing, destruction of underground reefs by intensive fishing and you talk to me about poop ? When there is a way to fix a problem people like to look the other way.
