Been watching WML for awhile in order but is it just me or does anyone else come to the comments to find what time something really funny happens but waits to watch the whole thing leading up to that point.
Alan King appeared in an interesting variety of big-screen movies over the course of 49 years; the last film in which he appeared was released in March of 2004, just 2 months before his death of lung cancer on 9 May 2004 (age 76). I think his single most under-rated role was in Enemies; A Love Story (an extraordinarily under-rated movie). He plays this big shot Park Avenue Reform rabbi who runs a chain of nursing homes and as nasty as he his he puts so much humanity into his role.
Mrs. Turnbull was married to Francis Worth Turnbull, and eventually took over the company (eventually named just Turnbull Bakeries) from him; it first sounded as if she'd done some precursor to a hostile takeover (the article said she 'gained control of the company from him'), but other articles I found indicated he was still involved up until the point near his retirement. It was ice cream cones and Melba toast, and they had facilities in Charlotte and New Orleans. (People rhapsodize about the Melba toast. I think this is a situation where you had to be there.) The Chattanooga facilities were sold to Bake-Line in 2002. Mrs.Turnbull was awfully stubborn, which was initially an immense asset, but it didn't benefit the company once she got into her 80s. It did, though, help them survive Katrina, and the aftermath. As Mark says, she died at age 89 in 2010. The company shut down for a bit and then re-started, with a son and two grand-kids in charge, but it didn't last past 2012. (There's some redevelopment being planned there now.) 13:02 Martin borrows Bennett's signature move of trying to make inferences based upon the contestant's hometown, and he gets the same typical result - a resolute "no", haha! 14:48 "Does it contain any nuts?" "Unlike the panel, it does not." "I *knew* you'd come through, John!" I just love the cheeky banter between Bennett and John; they're both so adorable!
The alligator wrestler said that he lost once and got 23 holes in his hand and dislocated his thumb. I'm guessing it was his left hand which got bitten because he shook hands very cheerfully with the panel on his way out. I still wonder what the point of the wrestling was, if not just as a novel thing to watch.
17:07 Bennett, probably by mistake, accuses John Daly of having turned over two cards after Martin Gabel's 'no'. Daly had not, but he acceded to Bennett's objection and turned a card back. While this had the effect of giving Bennett one more shot, the panel still lost.
The alligator wrestler appeared to be lame in his left arm. When he entered and exited, the arm seemed to hand loosely as though it were a useless limb. Maybe I'm just imaging it, but that's the way it appeared to me.
When he is first introduced, and as he walks to his chair, he does allow his left arm to hang loosely by his side. But at 6:32, he has his arms folded, with the fingers of his left hand resting casually against the inside of his right arm. He would not have been able to get into this position if his left arm were useless.
A Little, Random; tidbit for any interested.. Alan King and Steve Allen were (both) Born on/in the Same Day (Dec 26).. ..albeit six (or possibly five) days apart.. (1921 and 1927 I do Believe..)
Did you see how John’s face completely changes at approx 17:18? LOL after Bennett accuses him of turning two cards, he laughs at Martin’s comment and then he looks like he was actually pretty annoyed with Bennett. LOL Maybe he knew the camera would (should) be off him by that point. John did a really good job, I think, of never showing any irritation at Bennett when he constantly interrupts when John is speaking to guests after their ‘line’ has been revealed. Have you ever noticed how Bennett does that? Watching them in order it’s quite obvious… he does it a lot; like he cannot wait or be bothered to hear what John has to say, he has to just start speaking. LOL I don’t dislike Bennett, just an interesting observation.
I don't necessarily dislike Bennett either, but I have noticed that myself. Often when John is speaking to guests, usually saying something really nice to them, Bennett interrupts him mid-sentence - very rude!
You are both correct. I have decided that I don't care for him. He is sneaky with his comments, trying to find out information with out asking, the interruptions and ingratiating statements. I think he wanted to be the host at times.
I've watched almost all the episodes except for some that have mystery guests I don't care for..many occupations were repeated through the years. There were at least three women dogcatchers, two alligator wrestlers, sword swallowers and fire eaters, lots of people in the business of women's lingerie which always made the audience laugh. The list goes on and on.
@@shirleyrombough8173 yes. pro athletes were big, especially baseball which the panel seemed fond of. lots of circus acts with at least two that i recall were shot out of a cannon. almost forgot the big game hunters. there are some i'm sure i'm missing. i fall asleep to this show every night and naptime. it''s what i did when i was a kid late sunday nights when i often fell asleep during the show.
@@sophiemorrison9820 - And I either fall asleep to WML, the kitten rescue shows, Jim Gaffigan or Jay Leno's Headlines. Nothing controversial. all soothing. Except that I always make sure the WML episodes are ones with Dorothy Kilgallen. I won't watch otherwise. And I can pretend that she is still with us.
They also had a fondness for worms. Over the years, they had four people whose occupations were described as "raises worms", one who "breeds worms", three people who "sell worms" (including two who appeared together), two who "count worms", and one who "gathers and packs worms".
When I was a kid int the 1950's we went to Seminole Gardens. The alligator wrestling was just a bored Seminole going through the motions with a seriously drugged alligator.

He didn’t know how to describe it and at first I was surprised until I looked it up and read its description. It’s not an easy confection to describe😂 I never liked it, but my late husband who was a New Yorker loved it. It’s commonly found in Jewish style delicatessens.

I'm sorry for this, but it's the result of wrongful copyright claims that the channel is being attacked with by Fremantle, despite the indisputably public domain (non-copyrighted) status of the entire series, something they've been doing on and off to this channel for almost 4 years now. I'm in the process of fighting the claims, and when the claims are rescinded, the videos will be made public again. I hate having to do this, but I'm fighting against a giant international media conglomerate here, and there are very few options available, because RU-vid has slanted everything against independent channels like this one. I can only ask your patience until I'm able to resolve this. Thanks!
