Johnny Ray was a ground-breaking singer who's career has been unfortunately been over-looked by musical historians. He was the generational link between Sinatra and Elvis. No one sung with such passion and emotion prior to Johnny Ray. It was shocking. He was a total original who opened the door for all singers who followed to feel free to express their feelings.
In less than 1 month from this show's airing, 2 young teenagers from Liverpool would meet up and really change popular music FOREVER!!! July 6th, 1957 Lennon/McCartney
Joseph William Kittinger II (born July 27, 1928) is a retired Colonel in the United States Air Force and a USAF Command Pilot. Following his initial operational assignment in fighter aircraft, he participated in Project Manhigh and Project Excelsior in 1960, setting a world record for the highest skydive from a height greater than 31 kilometres (19 mi).[1] He was also the first man to make a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a gas balloon.
I grew up watching this with my family once we could afford a TV. It was great to watch then AND now. Back in the day, I don't think we knew how good it was. Today, there is so much low brow garbage on TV (and elsewhere) that What's My Line's quality really stands out.
I am so so thankful to whoever is posting these. I find the show so relaxing and fun to watch. And it seemed ahead of its time mostly (except for some inappropriate comments about the bodies of some of the female contestants). It had intelligent women on the panel - I am so intrigued by Dorothy Killgalen!
I find nothing wrong about comments about the women's physique. These are possibly clues to the person's "line," and they are asked in respectful ways. They ask similar questions of the men, so can we all please quit being so overly sensitive these days?
@@guitarjamie Still alive as of June 30th 2021. Read this hero's bio on wikipedia!!! what accomplishments!!! God Bless you SIR!!! Thank you for your service!!!
As of today, November 20, 2022, 🎈Col. Joseph Kittinger is still with us at the age of 94!! 🙋🏽♀️💕 Edit: Col. Joseph Kittinger unfortunately passed away on December 9, 2022 after battling lung cancer 😢 May you Rest In Peace in our Lord’s arms, Amen
Love watching these old shows. So much better than the drivel that passes nowadays. Ms Killgallen was always so spot on with her questions, I suspected she'd been tipped off. Didn't know until recently that she had a relationship of sorts with Johnny Ray
@@Sunmoon-gj9gy I heard that, at first, they had a tiff over something she'd written in her column. And, after they met, then they started having an affair.
Johnnie Ray was born January 10, 1927, in Hopewell, Oregon, to parents Elmer and Hazel (Simkins) Ray.[5] Along with older sister Elma, Ray spent part of his childhood on a farm in Dallas, Oregon and attended grade school there. The family later moved to Portland, Oregon, where Ray attended high school. At age 13, Ray became deaf in his left ear following a mishap that occurred during a Boy Scout "blanket toss." In later years, Ray performed wearing a hearing aid. Surgery performed in 1958 left him almost completely deaf in both ears, although hearing aids helped his condition.
When John asked his question about radio failure, he revealed that he knows what he's talking about. Asking about CW (Continuous Wave) suggests either that John used radio in his military service, is Radio Ham or both. Radio operators use the expression CW to refer to Morse Code. He's also aware of the Troposphere and Stratosphere and doubtless, the Ionosphere. Very erudite gentleman!
It wasnt rare to know about the atmosphere back then. It was part of everybody's science teaching in school. Most high school kids could answer questions like that. (not CW).
liberty Ann I totally agree. Can you imagine the show on TV today: occupation: a dildo sales person, and the alleged celebrity would be some Kardashian
Ann, you are correct when comparing 1950s WML to television, but we watch WML on RU-vid and many RU-vid shows are far more intelligent than WML. There are shows covering every subject at every degree of sophistication from pre-K to PhD.
@@stevekru6518, really? Well in the 1950's U.S. schools were among the top public education institutions in the world. Furthermore, I once opened up English and Math books from the 1920's, and told my UNCLE ROBERT a College prof. and department Dean for whom I am named, that those math problems, and grammar lessons were what I was just getting into as I entered the 7th. Grade, back in the early '70's. He then turned to the front of the books and showed me the copyright dates - 1927..and then he showed me the names of the books which he had kept hidden from me..they were associated with each other. One was called "Math Problems For..." and the other was titled: "English Grammar For..." FINISHING THE TITLES.. "Second graders"... Then later, tests for students from the 1910's revealed stuff we had not even approached in high school..it was far and away above what we had learned in high school. IT WAS AN ELEMENTARY OR GRAMMAR SCHOOL completion test. Students could not graduate from the 8th. grade without passing it. Tell me how good and intellectual our brains, and schools are now..AND OUR FRAME OF REFERENCE, and our ability to think..are now. Our public schools are 45th in the world.. Dumb down the masses, distract them with useless beer and circuses and pop culture full of assinine ideas and values, and capture their ignorance and freedom and Liberty. Brainwash them, and watch them destroy the country that gave us all eventually, that Liberty.. Yep..
@@robertsprouse9282 An astute observation. Won't get into politics altho I want to. A high school diploma back in late 50s was equal to a two year term in college.
@@jerrylee8261, I will go you one better/or worse.. MY Uncle Robert, professor and DEAN OF COMPUTER PROGRAMMING AT KILGORE JR. COLLEGE for decades, told me in the 1970's, 80's and '90's that students in his freshman classes had the educational development of high school frosh in the 1950's.
Johnnie Ray was more popular in England than in the US (one reason for the reference to the British group Dexy's Midnight Runners on here). He trademark was that he cried on stage while performing, leading to his nickname as the "Prince of Wails"
Johnny Ray was mentioned in a song by Dexy's Midnight Runners called Come on, Eileen in 1982. Footage showing him arriving at Heathrow in 1954 was also shown. I loved the music video and only just now saw that Johnny Ray was a famous singer in the 1950s.
The last thing I remember her doing was playing Henry Fonda's wife on the short-lived ABC comedy-drama "The Smith Family" in the early '70s. The show focused on the working and home life of a cop; one of the kids on the show was played by Ron Howard, somewhere in time between "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Happy Days."
@@bobthetvfan, yep, just like the FAMILY ON PRIMROSE LANE.. I think twas the only time Henry Fonda did a TV show as a series regular. Darleen Carr who was in the SOUND OF MUSIC along with her late sis CHARMIAN C., played the daughter. She was cute as hell. I being a teen had a crush on her, lol..
He played the game well, too, compared to some guest celebrities who just can't get the knack of it. Wally Cox comes to mind, though I liked his work. He did do the Mystery Guest feature, too, though I don't remember how often. :)
@Arby Fatbuckle. I agree. The way that he portrays himself in public is the same as what he's like in private. I have a DVD that tells his biography. Ozzie Nelson never smoked and he never drank any alcohol. He and his brother produced "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" tv 📺 show.
Ozzie was one SWELL leader and singer. He turned out many A-class shellacs in the late Thirties/early Forties. Also, he can be viewed in propria persona as well as heard during his musical heyday RIGHT HERE on Y-T. Just search and surely ye shall find. (With Y-T, we're having more fun than to what we are entitled! Don't tell them!)
Ozzie Nelson proved that he's really smart because he was able to figure out a contestant's line or occupation fairly quickly. I don't think that he's been on the panel very often.
I haven't heard the term "CW" for radio for a long, long time. CW stood for "continuous wave" and required using a telegraph key for transmissions in Morse code and a receiver with an oscillator in it to hear the dots and dashes (also known as dits and dahs). CW as opposed to voice transmissions in AM (amplitude modulation) or FM (frequency modulation) or SSB (single sideband). So apparently, the first contestant had to communicate using his CW radio equipment via Morse code, because his voice-capable radio equipment failed.
Many years ago a motorist in Gastonia NC was saved by blowing SOS on his horn[Well, actually he mistakenly blew OSO: an S is 3 dots; an O is 3 dashes]. His car was off-the-road & not visible from it.
Johnnie Ray was bisexual, mostly closeted guy who became close to Dorothy Kilgallen who frequented clubs including those where he performed. She would go without her husband as her marriage was deteriorating. He was rumored to be the father of her youngest child who also resembled him and not like her dark haired husband. www.tvbanter.net/2013/12/dorothy-kilgallen-of-whats-my-line-why.html

thanx for posting. I've never ever seen this episode before. RE: [ 0:30 ] the capitol letters WML title at the beginning of live picture --- Apparently they were getting ready for the new animated introduction. Interesting to see bandleader-actor Ozzie Nelson as himself in something other than the very very long-running "Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" on both radio and TV. He did well that night, too. WML should have booked him on more often. I hadn't heard of Miss Blair. Actress she is. Appeared in Sid Caesar's comedy hour and in a current movie. Years later, she co-starred with Henry Fonda in a favorite 1970s sitcom "The Smith Family" with Ronny Howard.
Janet Blair also performed frequently as a singer at some of the top clubs. Her Wikipedia bio mentions her performing at the Empire Room at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. Ironically that was the club where Johnnie Ray was performing at the time of this episode.
RE: Dorothy Kilgallen == of all people == asking if he is tall dark and handsome. Maybe he wasn't tall because he IS a dish, as they once said. God only knows. Would be interesting to know where this appearance fit into the Kilgallen-Ray . . . uh -- friendship.
soulierinvestments So true!! He was considerably younger too! She was 14 years older. Just checked the fascinating book “The Woman Who Knew Too Much” by Mark Shaw and by 1957 their affair was “torrid”! Despite Johnnie Ray being bisexual! But then Dorothy’s husband was too.
@@suetucker9264 Ray appeared as a Mystery Guest in 1954, the same year Dorothy gave birth to Kerry, who was rumored to have been fathered by Ray. So their relationship was already a few years old by this point.
Ozzie and his wife enjoyed many years of fame in the music field. Looking at the date of this show, he was about to pass the torch to his youngest son by the end of the year.
Janet Blair was a big band singer who is today best remembered for playing Rosalind Russell's sister in My Sister Eileen (1942) and Rita Hayworth's best friend in Tonight and Every Night (1945).
He released many excellent songs. Looks like he was ready to really let loose throughout this one! Unforgettable for anyone who remembers him, or perhaps who is introduced to him. Think my favorite is '"Look Homeward, Angel".
That was by far my favorite song when I was younger. My former husband and I were talking the other day and the subject of this song came up. I loved Johnnie Ray ♥️⚜️♥️
And by the way: Even if I do not make comments, I still keep watching all your uploaded videos almost every day (and if I miss one day, I watch four videos on the next day :) )
I fall asleep to wml episodes every night. I fell asleep Sunday nights watching it when I was a child. I loved everything about the show from the introductions to seeing the womens ' dresses, the sharp way the regulars played the game, the wit, John daly's hosting style and intelligence, how informed everyone seemed to be about current events, the way the audience laughed when the contestant 's occupation had anything to do with women's undergarments. I even loved when the panel said goodnight to one another. Some older game shows have made brief comebacks but I don't think they could possibly do wml justice. Thankfully there are over eight hundred episodes to watch.
I'm impressed that Ozzie figured out the first contestant flew in a balloon -- and as soon as Ozzie established that, Bennett chimed in about the man who flew up 18 miles, breaking all records. I still don't know what Ozzie's profession on "Ozzie & Harriet" was supposed to be -- he was the father of the Nelson boys and Harriet's wife, but he seemed to be home all the time wearing a cardigan sweater with occasional trips down to the "malt shop" for milk shakes or ice cream. He was never shown as someone who had a job on that sitcom. (At least Robert Young as Jim Anderson on "Father Knows Best" was supposed to be an insurance agent and was shown to come home from work each night.) Of course, in real life, before Ozzie & Harriet had a radio sitcom followed by a TV sticom, Ozzie Nelson was a bandleader and Harriet Hilliard was the featured singer with Ozzies band -- and they got married as a result of that musical and professional relationship.
In the movie "Here Come the Nelsons" that doubled as the pilot for the TV Series (to see how well the other family members could transition from radio to TV), Ozzie plays an advertising executive assigned to a campaign promoting women's underwear.
😂In the pilot movie for the television series titled "Here Come the Nelsons", Ozzie sold insurance. No other reference to his job was ever mentioned throughout the fourteen year run of the series. 😅
@lisahinton9682 OK, so nobody has come forward with DNA profiles that could confirm or disprove the rumor. No one has come forward with Dorothy’s husband Dick’s DNA profile, either. No one has provided a video or audio-recorded eyewitness account of someone saying, “The rumor is hogwash. Dick Kollmar is indeed Kerry’s dad. Dorothy and Dick slept together regularly in 1953.” No one has provided such statements from an eyewitness. For a few years before Lee Israel’s 2014 death, poor health kept her away from RU-vid comments and social media. She could have commented on the possible persistence of the rumor throughout the 1970s. That was when she worked on her Kilgallen book. Kerry himself has said nothing publicly about his mother or Dick Kollmar since the early 1990s. Kerry Facebooks occasionally, and blocks people who ask him questions that makes him uncomfortable. That does not tell us what he believes about his dad’s identity.
His deafness can be seen here. It was so sad and it got worse after botched attempts to improve the situation. Maybe the emotion he put into his performances was down to his heightened other senses.
All the contestants had beautiful handwriting . Most people did back then. I studied Palmer in 4th grade in 1957 . Kids now dont even get taught the correct way to hold a pencil , and many of them can't read cursive !
Johnny Ray and Dorothy had a Passionate Relationship said to have resulted in a son. Her life ended in such tragic circumstances and the gov in the middle of it - I hope they Lived with Great Love and Happiness. ...and I know the truth will emerge as she would desire.
Ok, I'm so confused. You are the second person I've seen on here to suggest that Kerry wasn't Richard Kollmar's biological son. I really would like to know where this information is coming from. I've read Lee Israel's biography on Dorothy and there was nothing in that book to suggest that. Besides, adult Kerry is the spitting image of Richard Kollmar.
19:30 i don't get why Johnnie Ray answered NO about primarily making records (??) that's how i remember him (as did Dexy's Midnight Runners) "Poor old Johnny Ray Sounded sad upon the radio moved a million hearts in mono Our mothers cried Sang along Who'd blame them?"
Ray was one of the top recording artists of the period, with "Just Walking in the Rain" a huge hit the prior year (after many 1950's hits before it), so it would have been fair to say "Yes" when asked he was primarily a recording artist (or at least have John mention it was a strong area of identification with the guest), but dodgy responses often rule the day with the mystery guests.
I think John was purposely helping Johnnie Ray in answering the questions because of his deafness. Especially the one where Dorothy asked him if he played a musical instrument and John interceded not really asking Johnnie Ray the question again but just trying toThrow Dorothy off the track by asking if she meant that he played a musical instrument as his main means of employment as a performer.
Joseph Kittinger died a couple weeks ago at age 94. Most recently, Kittinger advised Felix Baumgartner on Baumgartner's October 14, 2012, free-fall from 128,100 feet
What Janet Blair said at the end about replacing Arlene was exactly what Kitty Carlisle said a few years later when replacing Dorothy..... Sorry if others have commented the same I scanned comments briefly but didn't see anyone....
Too bad the person(s) that murdered Dorothy Kilgallen were never brought to justice on earth. God was/is the final judge and jury. She was a very talented journalist and beautiful lady.
I just watched a long video on RU-vid, where the author of the book "The Reporter Who Knew Too Much" claims that Johnny Ray had an affair with Dorothy Kilgallen, and was the father of her child.
12:19 I like the way the female contestant said "Yes". She sounded like a duck. The final contestant had the LONGEST eyebrows I've even seen on anyone.
I've seen the situation in previous episodes. I wonder if the guest panelist wasn't someone they brought in at the last minute because the guest panelist original scheduled couldn't appear for some reason and they didn't have a name plate ready for the last-minute guest panelist, thus requiring them to have no name plates at all. I've noticed that there wasn't a "Mr. Daly" name plate, either -- but I don't think I've seen one for him for a while, though I could be wrong about that.
Turns out that perfumed rice is not that unusual, just the application that is different. There are several perfumed, or fragrant rices in Asian dishes, and possibly middle Eastern. The wedding application is unusual, and does not seem common today.
No, what usually happens in "America" is we throw wild bird feed instead of rice. Most birds have a hard-time digesting rice. The other good thing about it is within another half-hour or so its all gone and cleaned up. The birds love it.
The past many years, the trend is to have small plastic bottles shaped like wedding cakes or bells or bouquets that hold bubble-making liquid and small oval wands as the lids. When brides and grooms exit the church/venue on their way to the "get away vehicles," guest shower them with hundreds of shimmering bubbles. It's lovely and requires no clean up.
Supposedly, Dorothy Kilgallen’s and Johnny Ray were lovers and he was the father of her 3rd child who was disowned by her husband after her death in 1965.
So Dorothy had an affair with Johnnie Ray? And he was the biological father of her son Kerry? Well, he is 14 years younger than her so I guess his youth must have been a factor in her adultery?
An awkward mystery guest considering Dorothy Killgallen had given birth to Johnny Ray's love child Kerry three years earlier while married to Dick Kollmar. She tried to pass off Kerry as Dick's son, but take a look at Kerry and Johnny and you'll see the.truth. Dick disowned Kerry after Dorothy died.
