Looks like Orcad as a standalone PCB software couldn’t stand, so they are copying the interface and UI of Altium. They think, people are very much used to Altium, so let’s revamp it like that only. But tbh, orcad/allegro’s old interface and UI sucks.
I am disappointed they STILL have haven't allowed a method to search SUBFOLDERS under the symbol paths. This would allow me to organize all of my symbols in heirarchical folders without adding all of those to the folder paths list of capture and layout.
I just finished a large board in Presto. I like it a lot. I had to switch over to PCB Designer for a few things that are strangely missing in Presto, but I have seen that Cadence is fixing those. Floating toolbars, docked panels, really like all of that.
Right?? I'm liking the options a lot as well. They'll probably incorporate those changes, like you mentioned. Looking forward to which things they''ll put back in presto. I really like the ability to rotate my diffpair via insertion points on the fly for instance.
Been using Allegro/Orcad for 30 years plus and have gone thru every update thru the years. This by far is a step back. How is burying all the one click icon commands better? If I want software that looks like Altium I can just buy Altium. Old saying "If it ain't broke - Don't try to fix it" .
I hear that. I still use OrCAD's classic interface, which gives me access to everything I need. Cadence seems to be targeting the newer designers and giving them a more straightforward path to getting their designs done. 80% of the engineers will do fine with OrCAD Presto and the new layout, while the 20% that likes the expanded menu and experience (and one-click options, though I imagine new users would like that as well in some cases) will use the classic interface most of the time. I want to call classic the standard interface, but want to avoid people confusing it with the OrCAD Standard license, which is still a thing for some reason...
@@techedkirschEE Question? So, if I'm working in Orcad X is there a way to go back to the 17.4 interface or do I need a 17.4 license also? Is there a down_rev option somewhere in Orcad X?
@@franksoressi6634ah I can’t find the guide I made so I’ll say it here: 1. Both interfaces are available on the same license. No need for separate licenses. Just have to find them. After you install the latest OrCAD 23.1 (also called X), you can enter PCB Editor in the windows start menu to access the classic menu. Type Presto to find Presto. You can define which of those two tools you want to open your boards from within orcad capture (still the same interface for schematics. No new X version interface). In Capture, in the PCB menu, you can do PCB design setup, then you can choose ‘PCB Editor’ or ‘Presto’. So yes it’s both in the same software suite I’m using on a single license.
