Cannot wait to get this DNA linker! In the meantime, I am loving the DNA tag and use that a ton in lots of my trees -- including trees that are not linked to my DNA results.

I have started Crista...I am going through each individual making notes on my family members of proof found,where,dates and then list what I need for that person for proof and it is making research fun like when I first started and not feel "stuck" thanks!

Thank you for this video. I remember indexing some of the WW2 draft records. One of the names of a next of kin was 'Elizabeth Last One ....' I've often wondered if she actually was the 'last one.'

Hi! I love watching your videos! Can you help me learn to do the cluster search that was shown on genealogy tv. You copy the census records and paste it to excel. When I do that it only paste to a single column and is not able to be searched. As of two months ago genealogy tv was able to do this but I can’t today. Did ancestry change our ability to copy and paste into excel? Your help is much appreciated.

I suggest you do an entire program on "Shared Ancestors" revealed by DNA matches. For some of my ancestors, I literally have dozens of DNA matches. Is it warranted in such a case to conclude the connection has been established. I'm particularly curious about the situation with respect to my grandmother's family. I've done almost no traditional research on her family and as such only know her grandparent's names on the father's side of her family, but the DNA matches and suggested potential ancestors for this branch have become so numerous that I have the distinct impression the DNA matches alone (interpreted with respect to trees worked out by others) would be sufficient for me to go back two or three generations.

Christa, I have a subscription to Ancestry and also had my DNA test through Ancestry. My question is, I have found matches with ThruLine and when look to the shared list, they don't match anyone else's in the shared list. Why don't they match anyone in the shared list?

As you said, think about what information is given, see if something else corroborates the information. Just because the name is the same does not mean it is the person you are looking for. One instance, distant aunt, 2 woman, first middle and last married name the same, BUT one was born in April and one in October. My relative was born in April which was listed in the 1940 census.

Hello Crista, here in southern California when we are Hospitalized or jailed we have DNA tests done on us, I am sure that we have a database where these results are kept, do you know if these results are accessible for researchers?. I would love to have my deceased grandparents DNA results.

oh. i have a match with a first cousin, then there are people who do match me but i go and look for matches for him and I find people that I find very interesting. is that correct way to use the dna part of ancestry

skydaver2 Absolutely! You can assume that those who you can triangulate with that first cousin is likely either a descendant of your common ancestor with them, or you share a relative with that common ancestors parents or grandparents!

I'm really starting to hate the fact that I was adapted. I tried using the DNA icon, and was able to add one person who is deceased but her son is my 2nd cousin once or twice removed. Its frustrating since I know nothing about my bio father.

I'm trying to get past my great grandfather but I've hit a brick wall. Got no information about anything on that side and I can't find any cenus records, tried everything by guessing dates of death etc absolutely nothing. No dna matches to get past it too.

I'm not a professional, but here's some tips you may have not tried yet:) Depending on the time frame and the state, there's a lot of different possible ways to break through that wall. Make sure to use FamilySearch (both their records and the Wiki) and watch videos about brick walls, especially if you can find something pertaining to the years you're researching (like 1790-1850 with only the HOH, 1850-1880 with no relation to HOH, post 1880 with relation to HOH, etc). If it's Census era, try finding his neighbors in a different year and then flipping a page or two each way. Try searching by a different family member like a sibling. Do cluster research which is using other people such as a sibling as said before because that's helped me a lot in the past.

In the response Crista gave about getting your own photos that you have attached to your tree as hints, and she responded by saying that someone else has downloaded it and uploaded it, and Ancestry doesn't know it's the same, well I'm getting hints where the person who uploaded the photo is me!!! I wish it wouldn't do this!!!

This happens to me all the time as well. I think the person who downloads our photos is convinced that unless they upload it themselves, the photo will disappear if the original poster were to choose to suspend or delete his/her accounts. But I agree, all they would need to do is look at the name of the original source of the photo to figure out you are already aware of the photo.

@@rudged123 That could be true, but if it were them who had downloaded and uploaded it wouldn't it appear with their name as the owner of the photo? It isn't in my case, they are hints with my own account name attached. If they had done what you suggest then it would be a shortcoming in the Ancestry app that it doesn't compare a photo attached to your ancestor and compare it to what might be a potential match, but I'm not sure that this is the case here.

@@rudged123 Guest Accounts are not able to link member’s online photos...they have download and reupload the photos..one reason for multiple photos in hints.

I may have missed it but I have no idea how to change the person on a document hunt. Example: I get a document and it is a hint for a son but it actually the father. I don't want to ignore the document, I want to put it under the correct person

There are two ways to change a record from a hint that requires you to go through the review flow based on the person in your tree into a regular record that can be saved to anyone in your tree. The first is to click on one of the other names on the record. This rotates them to become the focus person. You can then click back to the primary person on the record and save it to them. The second is to look for the "&hid" string in the URL and delete it and everything that comes after it and then hit enter. Hope that helps. (~Crista)

Crista, you say have one tree and I agree what I'm confused on is who to stop adding. If my aunt marries a man and have kids by that man, I will share DNA with that mans siblings children and children's, children will I not? So, if I'm correct where does the shared DNA stop?

Quick basic Question- My mom was in the process of a divorce when I was born. They used her husbands name on my birth certificate and all records. I recently found out who my biological father was. His surname was Recker. How do I identify on my family tree? Records would be in one name and DNA in another . Perhaps I should use birth name and (DNA name ) in parentheses. How would you do it?

You can add one name as your primary name and the other as an alternate name.

Why is there no way to search women in our trees by married names? I have multiple individuals who I've identify go by alternative names and it would be helpful if the search engine would allow me to search by any one of the names I have identified as being used to refer to her. In general I like to have the official name in my tree to be her maiden name. But if a woman marries three times, she has a minimum of four different names.

The Genealogical standard is maiden names only....I believe that is why they do not have that feature, but ai like your idea.

5-8 generations back give you DNA in large enough chunks to be identifiable as Identical by descent (you share an ancestor- usually considered 7-10 cms). Beyond that the odds that you'd match a stranger because of identical by state (just chance the alleles in that area formed in the same way) increase dramatically. Hope that helps.

Lance Hall Even a triangulation indicator would be a major improvement. I get why they feel nervous about a chromosome browser as it can be used to infer SNP data which makes the health insurers salivate, but something HAS to be given to make long range matches more reliable.

I was looking for a piece of information on my Gt grandfather, and saw a tree with a name I didn't recognize as owner. I clicked on the tree, and kept scrolling back until I got to my father's page. I was in a total shock to see my name listed under children. I thought Ancestry didn't allow living people. I asked this woman several times to take it down, or make private, and she has ignored me finally telling me to deal with it. I contacted Ancestry several times, and they won't help me telling me they just can't go into a tree and remove something. I went to a source I thought this woman may have shared her tree, and no help there. I go though all of these "shared trees" and people add whatever they like. I found my grand and gt grandparents wedding photos in unrelated persons tree listed as (their) grand parents in a different name. I was informed by one person I sent a message to about the information he posted, and he informed me "dead people don't have rights." Well, maybe dead people don't have rights, but what ever happened to common decency?
