Hey Tristan... you have a very interesting mix of high-quality films that end up being sober, precise, and calm at the same time. I like it! And about the gear... sturdy and expensive-and-or-high-investment gear - this needs to be highlighted, especially for the beginner and, often, short-budget cyclist. You still have lots of room to cut equipment weight! Although I like how you don't run into the fetishist ultra-light-weight rat race! Cheers man! Keep going!
@tristanbogaard
@tristanbogaard 2 года назад
Thank you for the constructive feedback! Yep, my setup definitely has some high end bits, but I think I point that out in the beginning of the video. It’s absolutely crucial to realize you have to start with what you have-you can take a look at my ‘Cyclemerica’ videos, the first videos I uploaded on here. Had a crappy bike, big backpack and lots of motivation going for it. Will do another setup video in 2022 and will take your comment into account! Have a good one and keep riding.

@@tristanbogaardSame page, man! It's exactly because I saw that you make small disclosures here or there that I decided to comment on this. I think that above all we have to take care of the community and the bikepacker philosophy and not let it be swallowed up by commercial exploitation. Bikepacking is not and does not need to be elitist. I know you know that! Nothing wrong with promoting good gear that really works… but on the other hand, for example, Volle straps and cheap dry bags do wonders at a very low cost… and we also have several DIY solutions, which maybe deserve some attention here or there! But, I think I'm just repeating what you just said in your reply! Keep riding man!

Hi Tristan, like your setup and as a beginner bicycle traveller i like to understand one thing. I did travel before on a motorbike for years but you don’t attach things on your steer on a motorbike I try to understand why people as yourself put this bag on your steer and not for example a bit lower on a rack. Oké I understand the rack is extra weight but I think the weight on your steer will effects your steer bearing and your cables. Not? Thanks for sharing this video it is very helpful for people like me starting this new adventure.
@tristanbogaard
@tristanbogaard 3 месяца назад
That’s a great question! The reason I attach any bags to my bike is because when they’re strapped to the bike, instead of a rack, there’s much less weight resistance, noise, balance issues or risk of damage then with panniers on a rack (when cycling anything else but asphalt). As for the handlebar and weight distribution (as well as bags on the fork), you get used to this pretty quickly. As long as it’s all centered and the weight is somewhat equal in the entire bag width, there is no exceptional gravitational force at play. However, I’ve come to always combine strapping bags up front with a rear rack and two small panniers in the back, because panniers afford space for the unpredictable. I use the Ortlieb Gravel-Packs, which are designed to meet off-road standards. Hopefully that answers your question!

@tristanbogaard

The stove is actually from Trangia! The windshield is Vargo. And the fuel I use is any kind of alcohol, but preferably ethanol.

Bijv. Silca of Topeak. Lijkt me ook dat zo’n tripod lichter moet kunnen. Verder super interessant. Ik heb die Ortlieb vacuüm zakken maar gebruikte ze alleen voor de slaapzak. Om er kleding in te doen is een interessant idee.

What are the little bottles you use for the spices?
@tristanbogaard
@tristanbogaard 3 года назад
Good question! They were given to me as a present and we’re bought at an outdoor-sports shop in Amsterdam. They’re not made of recycled plastic unfortunately, but I’d say that you can get these in outdoor oriented shops or places that sell kitchen wear. Friends of ours store their spices in the little containers that are used for film, a really smart re-use solution as well (as long as there’s no more film)
@MurielZaccuri
@MurielZaccuri 3 года назад
@@tristanbogaard thank you Tristan. I'll have a look at outdoor shop for those. The idea of film container is great, not sure where to find them nowadays. They used to be ubiquitous... a few years ago. Kind of rare now. 😂

Tristan, why did you switch from Specialized Sequoia to Specialized Diverge? but you still rode the Sequoia through much worse terrain (Pamir).
@tristanbogaard
@tristanbogaard 2 года назад
Great question! Two main reasons; I felt that (handlebar stem) suspension would help soften the gravel and forest tracks we take more and more often, secondly I really wanted a flat handlebar to be able to use the full size of my Ortlieb Handlebar-pack. That’s basically it. The Sequoia will be used again, I adore that bike so much!

It doesn't matter what is your gear's brand, As long as it is reliable and durable, and I have no idea, what is the purpose of this video. Not useful for the average cyclist with modest budget, who wants to start cycling long distances.
@PeterHagenuk
@PeterHagenuk 3 года назад
I actually disagree. If you want your gear to be sustainable (not only meaning durable but environmentally and socially responsible produced) brands absolutely matter and it comes down to a few. I’m glad to see Tristan uses mostly sustainable brands. The video does a lot to inspire. Thanks Tristan!
@tristanbogaard

Like I say in the beginning, nothing of it is necessary to start traveling by bike. Just taking people through my personal setup to give ideas for those looking for them!
@tristanbogaard
@tristanbogaard 3 года назад
@ole thanks for that mate! You’re spot on, it’s really important to save up over long periods of time and get stuff that lasts. MSR for example, is not the most sustainable brand but the tent is very tough and has lasted us so far. That’s what we go for!
@vmave94

hello, great video! Do you have a 4.1 liters fork bags? I just wanna buy it but can't be sure if this bag has enough space to store the sleeping bag with size of 10.5 x 26 cm. Seems like 5.8 l would be better option, what do you think?
@tristanbogaard

Yep, go for 5.8L! That might even have space for something else too.

hi again :) what size of the compression bag where the sleeping bag is stored? 7 or 12 liters?
@tristanbogaard
@tristanbogaard 9 месяцев назад
The 12L! This is so there’s more stuffing space for it, before compressing down a lot, to make it easier to get in.

You despise the down industry but you have a “recycled down” sleeping bag? Isn’t that kind of hypocritical? Aren’t you Vegan? 😊
@tristanbogaard

I don’t think that’s hypocritical, because it’s reusing down that would’ve otherwise been discarded.

@@tristanbogaard You’re still using something that you despise and that is hypocritical. It’s like a PETA member wearing a leather coat that is recycled.
