To answer your question, love this game. I think it got overshadowed by Lorenzo il Magnifico but I personally like this one much more.

Glad you think so! i worried this one looked a little darker than normal, but then i realized i hadn't turned on the hair light behind me. But yeah - the closeup cam was well behaved, and the colour matching between the Ryan Cam and the overhead cam was decent. (It took a lot of help and trial-and-error to get there!)

3 people at my local boardgame club own it, and according to bgg it's been played 6, 8, and 21 times. Though there's overlap between those stats as they were in some of the same games together. From whenever I've asked them about it they all individually seem to like it! It's even been played as recently as April 2020 by 2 of them!

This is the incarnation of a euro point salad and my wife and I love it a lot. And even more since we also played it with fours players recently. I even remember recommending this game strongly to you under another of your videos - really happy to see you finally got it and I am very curious what you gonna say :) My guess on why you might not hear too much about it, is the game hit quite some people with its dry nature and people don't rage about it, because they recognise it is an amazing game, but it's just not for them. And the ones who love it are still busy trying to bring they strategies to perfection or something. Actually in the rather small (2.6k members) German facebook group 'Brettspielspaß' I am in, many people seem to rate it very high and I see pictures being posted regularly. And now of course everbody is looking forward to Alma Mater coming soon by the same designers. By the way you might know games like Lorenzo Il Magnifico, Terramara or Grand Austria Hotel all sharing at least one of the Coimbra designers ;-) PS: My Concordia Venus edition farts like a Preafectus Magnus. Gotta remember recording that for you!
@NightsAroundaTable
@NightsAroundaTable 3 года назад
One of my patrons really likes Alma Mater. If i were to sum it up, i'd say Coimbra is like a marriage between Lorenzo il Magnifico and The Voyages of Marco Polo, except not nearly as unforgiving as either. Much easier to travel and score points than in either of those games. Also: bring on that box fart! The moment you turn your camera on, it won't happen. i guarantee. :)
@Johannes_W
@Johannes_W 3 года назад
@@NightsAroundaTable I will try it tomorrow and I hope it won't let me down, hehe. I see why you say less unforgiving in the sense that everybody at the table is able to get their points and the outcome is usually satisfying for all players. For me Marco Polo fell flat as I found the luck factor was far too high for a long euro game. In my 15+ matches of Coimbra I have yet to see a luck based win or loss. The best strategy and tactical adaptation has always won with nobody doubting the outcome. And still I haven't played Lorenzo, but it's up there on the wish list.

@@NightsAroundaTable Alright, I will try to put some in a few words. Firstly you check how the VP are spread on the four tracks. This gives a little idea on which tracks it makes sense to focus in the long run. Then it depends also a lot on the starting cards. When I get the card which give you the bonus for yellow cards and the money track is not the worst track then I find it best to follow the only two expedition plan with saving up to make sure you can get the granny that transfers money to VP. Of course it is a lot about tactics, but I find that some long term strategy is important to remember in which turn you have to save up guards or money and when you can just spend it without a risk. A tactical advise is to not underestimate small number dice. I love to pick them early to save up for round two and three. A purple strategy is usually includes diploma collection, because a lot of travelling makes this much more viable. This is often a cheap strategy so you can try to get three or even four expeditions. I haven't seen a full grey strategy winning yet, but combined with synergizing green cards it works well too. It is less clear though like yellow and purple. Now that you made me wrap this up it might still mostly come down to tactics, but it surely helps to set some long-term goals or at least know on turn 1 in which few directions you should manoeuvre. I am not saying I mastered any of this, but since I shaped some plans I won 8 our of 10 games. Sorry if this does not make any sense, it is late over here and I had a couple of beers :-D

I really wanted to like this, it's beautiful and quite clever. But clever doesn't cut it by itself these days. The theme disappears almost as soon as you start playing. Then you're just getting cards that move you on tracks and it feels like you're fiddling with an excel sheet. The whole time I was playing I was just thinking why I wasn't playing Troyes. Troyes also has dice drafting as a central mechanic and it's similar weight but the draft is much more fun, the puzzle is better, there's more player interaction, the game is much smoother and it's the most thematic euro ever. Troyes is just very close to this game in spirit and I'd always play Troyes over Coimbra. And if I really didn't care about theme and wanted a clever puzzle then I could just play Teotihuacan, which has a much more interesting puzzle to solve.
@NightsAroundaTable

i felt the exact same way about the theme completely vanishing.

Coimbra has some neat drafting mechanisms and mechanics but the iconography is a bit of a chore to learn (literally gave me a headache 😁) and relearn if not played regularly. Also, it doesn’t have a true built in solo mode which I like to have in a game. That being said I’ll take Newton over it any day as it’s much easier to learn and relearn and has a great solo mode. Coimbra does look much prettier though.

Played this at a friend's house once. The art style its self is pretty but the visual design has some issues with the massive number of abstract and often similar looking icons, some of which are hard to even see because of overlapping colors left me with a bad first impression. They seem to have tried really hard to avoid using text descriptions which is a mistake in my opinion. I will have to give it another try. This game would probably be more popular if it had better graphic design.

I've owned this AMAZING game since the year it was first available and play it frequently as well as suggest it as often as possible to many people in the 2 board game groups that I'm apart of on facebook. It's my all time #1 favourite game not only in my collection but also from all the games that I've played since 2004(I own 146 games and have played over 4,000 games since 2004). Everyone that I've taught it to and played it with has really loved it tbh. The replayability of this game is HUGE in all honesty because of the randomization of the royal card placement, your starting cards from the 8, the roll of the dice, the map tiles, and the destination cards(I've played this game a good 75x time and have yet to play the same game twice). The complaints that I've frequently seen over the years since this game came out have been that the map/travelling strategy is too strong and there's no way to combat it(INCORRECT). The way to combat it is to take a few of the green cards(At least 4) and the green/white die every round. You can also combat the map stategy by taking both the white and green die every round using the white as either the greeen or purple track and taking green/purple cards every round. In all of my play throughs of this game with my roommate and other board game friends(Whose played it just as much as myself and frequently uses the map travelling strategy) she's only won 12 of the 75 games with it and in those 12 games I travelled the map quite a bit myself whereas the other ones that I've either won or have been 2nd in I've only gone to 5-8 of the 14 destinations(At most).

Alexandre Alexandre Actually Coimbra is AMAZING @ 2p because of the dummy dice board player. The use of the dice are to help you really plan your moves and help mitigate both players from just taking all of the 3 & 4 cards pushing both players up the tracks way too fast making the game way too easy and less strategical. What's so bad about Coimbra is its replayability. I've played the game five times, and then I sold my copy. If you're going to play this game frequently, like three times a week, great! But if you play it infrequently, the iconography is such that you have to learn the game over again every time you play it. (Even if you taught it before) You'll be looking at the rulebook to figure out what each card in a row means. It slows the game down considerably and adds to the AP of players. Because each of your decisions in this game really matter, knowing what that card means is the difference between winning and losing. The other downside is its complexity. There is too much to juggle for some players who have never played a game with a 3.0 complexity rating on BGG. That makes it hard to get to the table again. While I love these designers, this is a definite pass for me. It's not worth the effort you put in.
@bcmaledragon
@bcmaledragon 3 года назад
Actually the replayability of this game is insanely huge and worth doing thanks to the randomization of the map tiles, destination cards, the placement of the royal cards in each row, and the dice rolls. I've owned the game since it first came out and have played it a good 75x since and have yet to play the same game twice thanks to all of the things I've mentioned. I've taught it to many of the people I know and it's mine and my roommates #1 all time favourite game in my collection(I own 146 games). I've also played over 4000 games since 2004 and this trumps all of those games for me. The royal cards iconography is the easiest to learn/know with regards to this game(I know what all of them do and inform everyone what they do once all of the cards have been layed out for the round). It is actually worth putting effort in to not only teaching this game to others but also playing it and is worthy of having in anyones collection to be honest.
@CTHenry
@CTHenry 3 года назад
