The recoil from a well designed flipper that rivals that of a strong out the side auto, just marvelous. I am a thumbstud guy but I also think flippers are cooler.

I have had several flippers now but all assisted, looking forward to my first non assisted flipper (probably a Civivi). My first was an all stainless Kershaw Shallot that I sold (stupid) and bought a SOG (very stupid). Thanks for the digging down and nuts & bolts of flippers. very interesting video.

The biggest reason I like flipper tab pocket knives is for a similar reason I don't like slip joint knives, it is safety. Slip joints can easily close up on your fingers while holding the knife if something goes wrong. The tab of the flipper, when the blade is out and locked into place, creates a finger guard to help prevent your fingers from sliding across the blade edge if your grip fails. Flipper tabs are not a perfect guard, but it is a small level of protection to reduce the likelihood of cutting your fingers.

I love the sound and the way it feels when my zt0095bw flips open. It’s so satisfying. It reminds me of the sound when racking a round in my gun.

Nothing I love more than a smooooth pivot on a flipper. Honestly, my favorite is my CRKT Ruger Follow Through despite being like a 25 dollar knife at this point.. It’s not the best knife, but it feels so good in hand and fun to fidget with when I’m watching shows. The blade is thick and heavy, so with even the slightest flick of the wrist it flies open. But even with the wrist flick it flies out almost effortlessly despite the large size of the blade. Almost like the resistance is not existent, but I can shake it furiously and it wont open on its own. It doubles as a fun food processing knife. After it’s been cleaned and sanitized of course. It feels better than my assisted flippers too because they have that little bit of resistance and I feel as though that makes them slower to deploy. I was into assisted and autos but they werent as fun to me. Plus I can open my flippers just as if not faster than autos and assisted knives. It almost starts to feel like an extension of yourself. The only assisted one that I truly love in my collection is a $10 weird pseudo karambit by a company called Rabbit. They’re hard to find, but for a cheap beater knife the blade is amazing, holds an edge really well and looks pretty cool. It’s more of a glorified utility knife, but it’s the only assisted one I truly enjoy. Actually that’s a lie. I have a cool Smith & Wesson one too. Again, cheap knife but it has a nice thin blade good for slicing, sharpens super fast and easily and also holds an edge for a while. I actually like that one because it has a “safety” that will change it from an assisted flipper to a manual one kind of like the Shrade Magic knife or whatever it’s called, but feels better in hand imo. They’re definitely budget knives, but work well for basic utility needs. I process a lot of cardboard and packaging at my job and i test them based on how long I can go without sharpening them and have them still perform well. I do have some expensive knives, but tbh I don’t actually use them. Those are specifically fidget items and pocket candy XD I only beat on my cheap knives.

I am definitely a flipper guy...I don't own or want to own anything with thumb studs or spidey holes. I will say, however, I just got my first front flipper a couple of weeks ago and really like it too. The Civivi McKenna is such an easy front flipper to use...great little knife.

Interesting discussion. Flippers are my favorite. Mainly because I suck at opening a knife any other way. For me, there is nothing more DISSATIFYING than failing to open a manuel flipper. Thats why I prefer the assisted flipper. No embarresment of failing a flip! My favorite flipper, althought not my favorite knife, is the Kershaw Leek. Detent is perfect. Opens flawlessly and effortlessly everytime and the angle of the flipper tab is not a hard 90 degrees, but a comfortable 120 degress. Thanks for the video!

Lol no one can open up my bareknuckle the first time I hand it to them because they put the finger on the frame lock and locks them out then I show them and they get confused on how I opened it so nicely. My bareknuckle is super smooth and fast to open but need to know how to use it.

I hadn't really given it much thought before, but having watched this vid, something new occurred to me. A flipper is more forgiving of a poor detent. A flipper seems to lend itself over to a little "wrist assist" than thumb studs do. Sure, both are readily doable, but flippers seem more wrist flick friendly.
@jgunther3398

Thumb stud takes some hand positioning. Good flipper, just hold it some way and brush your finger across a thing. Maybe more freeze proof...

I like flippers, but have become burned out on them. I don’t care for the flipper tab scraping my pinky when I put my hand in my pocket. Some are really sharp. (Looking at you M390 Cutjack). Lately I’m enjoying my thumb stud knives more. And for fidget factor, I think the axis lock beats most flippers.

I don't mind flippers but my main problem is that most of them are also frame locks. I f-ing hate frame locks. I can never seem to grab them without putting pressure on the lock bar and making it dang near impossible to open. I know that's a defect on my part but it's lead me to really not like them. I would be real curious to get my hands on Benchmade's Axis Flipper. More innovation to move away from frame locks would be amazing.

I kindly and respectfully disagree. I think you put your nerd cape on unnecessarily on this.The flipper is as close as you can get to auto deployment without finger jutsu. And auto is the coolest. Happy days knew that in the 70s . If it was legal everywhere I'm not sure the flipper would have ever existed. If the laws didn't get in the way we would be 100 years further along in knife R&D. Companies won't put money because they can't make money. So, for now the light saber is with the jet pack on the shelf. A flipper will have to do for now . Cuz it checks all the cool stuff box's. Physically, mentally and emotionally. And it's the only tool my wife lets me fidget with in the living room.
