Putting an air filter on your plasma cutter is a great way to provide clean air to your machine, which in return will increase the life of your torch consumables. Having torch consumables that are in good condition is what is going to give you the cleanest cuts with your machine and grant you the most cutting power. An air filter/dryer can save you money in the long run as torch consumables are rather expensive to replace.
There are a ton of different types of filters, but many fabricators go with the Motor Guard as it is easy to maintain, easy to install and has a small form factor. It's also really nice to only have to replace a filter cartridge instead of dealing with small desiccant beads, which can be a pain to deal with (Also very messy if you have fumble mitts like I do).
Another thing to watch out for is the CFM and PSI ratings of the filters you're using. Make sure the max CFM and PSI of the filter is higher than the CFM and PSI rating of your machine. If not, your machine will throw a low pressure warning light and shut off. This is usually only a problem on larger plasma cutters as they have a CFM rating of 6+, which can push the limits of some smaller filter/dryer combos.
If you all have any questions feel free to post them in the comments. Thanks for watching guys and have a great day.

The name Motor Guard came from the origional which used toilet paper to filter motor oil. The origional compressed air filter was designed to use toilet paper. There were no high wet strength elements in the 60s. If you use toilet paper use paper such as Scott 1000 sheet. Unroll it to the size of the Motor Guard elements. I still use them for Motor oil. The size of the tube can be made smaller and stronger by saving empty cores splitting them and inserting them. Probably not necessary with the new paper. It is shorter. The core wont get crushed.

I'm setting up a small plasma table in my garage and have a Hypertherm 30 XP plasma cutter. I don't have any air dryers yet and was thinking of the Motorguard filter also. Should I add another filter near the compressor? I'd prefer to keep this as cheap as possible. Amazon links would be helpful for an extra filter. Thank you.

My father ran TP in his Motor Guard style Air Dryer since at least early 80s. I inherited it a few years ago when he passed. I have never run any thing but TP in it either and have never had a problem....Actually there is one small issue. In order to cheat people a lot of TP manufactures are using a lager diameter cardboard tube to wind the paper onto cuz it lets them make a roll that looks the same size, but has less TP on it. Anyhow at least with very old Motor Guard style Air Dryers like mine cheater rolls of TP don't fit as well. They still work but are harder to load so I just recommend looking for and buying TP with the size tube that fits your filter.

The last paper I got at Walmart was the Great Value 1000. It had the 1and 1/2" core. The new paper is shorter. Probably wont crush and damage the core. The Factory elements are better if cost isn't an issue.

@@ralphwood8818 Yeah there's lots of TP shenanigans these days, but you can still find standard size rolls. If I'm having trouble finding it I usually look for single individually packaged TP. Those are most likely to be standard size.

@@jared7081 Ha no I didn't. I was considering buying one to jerry rig an extra air dryer for the air suspension in my truck. Did not get around to doing it. Seems like a pretty cool piece of gear tho
