So you want to learn SQL and you're looking for a good book? I think these two books by No Starch Press and O'Reilly are both excellent introductions to SQL. But which is the best? Watch the video to find out!

My two cents as I'm working through Learning SQL by O'Reilly. I think it's very useful to try and write the queries while you're studying the chapters. This is because the 3 or 4 exercises at the end of each chapter are not enough to practice the things you've jus read. Sometimes you can anticipate what the author wants to achieve with the next query: try to write it yourself without looking, perhaps make a mistake, but then your mind wil absorb the concept more easily. These books are practical SQL books, the whole point is getting used to build queries in an efficient and clear way. :)

You are absolutely right. I am learning from the 3rd edition and I almost run all queries in a chapter. The end exercises aren't even challenging

Thanks for sharing your experience. As a person with a non-computer science background, it will be more helpful if I can find a reference that speaks about the different types of databases (relational, no SQL, graph, ...), their application types, and use cases.

Excellent advice and at the end I purchased the Practical SQL right after I watched your video, thank you so much for the wonderful advice. The other book by o’Reilly was ridiculous over priced in the US, $59.99. I’m halfway into chapter 1 and your correct the book is engaging. P.S. what is the difference between Machine Learning and Data Science? In reference to the study courses involved? Is the course for MachineLearning more of a challenge in comparison to Data Science? I’m guessing there is more math involved?

Just for reference O'Reilly learning SQL is £19.99 currently. (I'm on an Amazon prime account as they gave me a free 30 days again at the moment - whether that changes prices or not I'm not sure). Thanks for your Vid. Amazingly I just looked on your channel a few days ago for an SQL book review because I wasn't sure where to start and I ended up finding all the free resources from another of your videos instead! and then suddenly you've uploaded this!

Go ahead and learn it. It's not going away anytime soon. It is estimated to be around until 2050. Even if it doesn't the concepts you learn will serve you for a lifetime.

It has been around for 40 years, will be probably for 40 more. And you should not depend on just 1 skill. There will come times like such where you would need to learn an entirely new skill for some task. You can't complaint that it's not going to help you in the long run

What do these books say about database design--including table normalization, enforcement of referential integrity, and the use of triggers and functions to ensure data integrity? In my 40+ years of SQL database design and development, I've found that these are the most important aspects of a successful SQL database. (I have not looked at these, but most books I've seen are sorely lacking in these areas.)
@Atlas92936
@Atlas92936 2 года назад
I'm currently going through the book Learning SQL and in Chapter 2 there is a section on data types and it's proceeded by normalization, and thinking about how the content of your tables might affect how you design it, and an example. I haven't came across the other things you've mentioned, but if I do, I will certainly mention it in this thread.

practical SQL is book not for beginners its more focus on intermediate queries. why it has very small section editing and modifying database a very critical requirements on handling database. Most of the chapter failed to explain why you would do this queries its like he is doing for fun or to showoff complex queries. The samples most you can't relate. its not for beginners.

The hundred page ML book I bought from your reco has been trash. The decision tree details use ID3 as optimization instead of entropy/information gain. The nearest neighbors section is literally half a page. The linear regression part does not use theta notation in the gradient descent for optimization parameters. It does not solve closed form / normal equation either. I'm taking the online ML course thru Carnegie Mellon U and Everytime I pick up the book. It is not as good as my class notes and is collecting dust.
