I find all pillows are bad for back sleeping. Sleeping without a pillow is better but, you have no neck support, this can lead to serious nerve pain in the neck. The solution is to use a small towel, fold it just enough times to provide support for your neck. At least that's what I have done, day 1, I feel amazing.
@@bhopirl4552 Chengyboy 99 Under the neck, i do that too. Another way too sleep comfortably is to put a small, thin pillow under your abdomen, so your butt is little up and a thin pillow under your head if you want to sleep on your front.
@@supersonic174 why did you change to pillow? What happened with sleeping without pillow and using a small towel to support your neck? Please help me answer this question bc i'm applying this currently. Thank you.
I sleep without pillow since quite a long time and it's one of the decision that I've ever made 😂 I feel like I have less back pain and that my back is straighter
All the blood will go to in the head if you sleep upside down, 8+ hours is fatal being upside down. It could cause brain damage, at minimum nausea for a couple of hours when awake.
It seems to be an individual thing. For the last two years, I'd often wake up with neck pain and headaches which were only relieved by getting a Chiropractic adjustment. I tried multiple types of pillows and different pillow arrangements, including cervical pillows, water pillows, various heights of support. I sleep on my back and on my sides. I don't get in bed and stay in one position. Who does? For the last two nights I slept without any pillow, using my hand(s) as head support when on my side. We have an extra firm mattress. My neck and shoulders are pain free!
That's exactly how Prophet Mohammad suggested people to sleep. You'll be surprised if you searched what he said about our daily activities like drinking water, eating, sitting, talking, relieving oneself, sex etc etc. There's not a sphere of life where he has not recommended what to do and what not to do. Following those advise could possibly change your life as it has changed mine. Assalam Alaikum.
@@mazirabbasi There are "spheres of life" that didn't exist back then, like modern technology for example, but I'll look into this to see what he recommended :) -your friendly neighbourhood satanist
Been sleeping without a pillow for 6 years now. Best decision I ever made. It really does feel way better on your entire body and you will sleep uninterrupted and feel rejuvenated every day. Seriously I recommend everyone ditch their pillow and upgrade to a more firm mattress if you haven't. Your body and mind will thank you
I always avoid a pillow sleeping on back. It's a perfect sleep, but we need to get used to it like getting used to on a flat surface. I personally feel like sleeping on a hard surface without pillow can easily erase out 2 hours of sleep. Yes, easily. On a hard surface we cannot sleep more than needed. And it seriously kills all body tiredness and pain. Try it. It needs 7 days to get used to it. Since I can't do it now for some reason but when ever I find my body to be stiff and not relaxed I sleep on floor with using just a sheet or thin mat and it would turn to be like a yoga sleep for my body.
I start the night by sleeping on my back, with deep breathing techniques I fall asleep very easily. For some reason, I wake up usually at least once or twice throughout the night. When that occurs for whatever reason, falling back asleep is easily achieved when I rotate on one of my sides. I 1st start by rotating over onto my left shoulder, then when I awake again I rotate onto my right shoulder. Recently I lent my room to a friend and toughed it out sleeping on a camping mattress for a few nights, with minimal neck support & ever since I've been waking up most nights with pretty decent neck pain that goes up into my head... I hope to figure this issue out soon :) Thank you for this well-made video, Doc
I am thinking this might help my chronic neck pain and morning headaches. I value Dr Mandells opinions. So glad I checked here ... Thanks Dr M ..AGAIN ! :)
I find it interesting that people talk about "Oh I sleep in this position or that position" etc etc. I personally sleep in ALL positions. I move around numerous times during the night, usually starting in the coma position, then going to my side, then back, other side. I find it impossible to believe anyone is actually going to wake up in the same position they feel asleep in. So I think it's hard to try to sleep in a particular position, for me anyways. What I need is a pillow that is thin in the middle for when I"m asleep on my back (head is usually central on the pillow) and thick on the sides for when I'm asleep on my sides (my head is always to one side of the pillow when I'm on my side with my face kind of off the edge of the pillow). Anyone got any suggestions?
I mostly sleep on my back and stomach last night I slept without a pillow and it was amazing it's so much more comfortable than with pillow I woke up without any neck or back pain
I buy the U shaped pillow for pregnant ladies, and use that to hold my back. I line my back with wide triangle memory foam that is hard to support my lower back and add lots of hard pillow to support the neck and head. This by far is the best zero lowback zero neck pain zero shoulder pain position ever
Hi,I have been diagnosed with forward head carriage and right now am just getting better from a bad "flare" as I call it. I have stiffness in the neck, shoulder achiness, a painful pulling down the inside of my arm to the tips of my ring and pinky finger, and the pinky finger is slightly numb. My main source of pain is located on the side of my left shoulder blade closest to the spine. It quite often feels like a hot knife twisting in one spot. My doctor has basically prescribed painkillers to me advising that it could be sometime before the inflammation fades away.Since finding your videos about neck and shoulder pain my condition has improved drastically and I want to thank you!!! One thing I am still fighting with is sleeping. I cannot lay in bed no matter how many different position, pillows, etc. I try. As soon as I get in bed that spot in my shoulder starts aching and gets steadily worse until I have to get up. At this point I am sleeping on my couch as I am able to prop my shoulders up on a pillow against the arm of the couch. For some reason this position doesn't seem to trigger the shoulder pain. Is there anything I can do to get back to sleeping in bed??
Get a yoga mat or a thicken carpet and try laying on the floor while sleeping. Preferably on your back if you can with the knees slightly bent. That may help your condition.
I know this is a long time later..but seriously go to a massage therapist and have them work on your scalenes. (Muscles in your neck) they often cause numbness in the hands and other issues.
Ugh this makes so much sense...I do like sleeping on my back and started sleeping without a pillow. It seemed to help for a while but then I noticed my neck was getting worse and worse. I would often wake up on my side after falling asleep on my back. That’s probably why my neck was hurting so much when I would wake up. Also have a hard time keeping my neck straight when I’m sleeping. I would lay on my back but turn my head to the right side and fall asleep like that. I really need to fix my alignment..I think that’s like 75% of my neck issues.
I know this is a weird question but it would be great if you could answer this: If I sleep on my back, should my head be placed near the edge of the pillow (with both shoulders resting on the bed, not resting on the pillow) OR should my head be placed higher up the pillow, and both of my shoulders be resting on the pillows? I am having shoulder and back ache and I am not sure if it is about my sleeping posture or sittint posture or sth else.
You need to talk more about back sleeping. Sleeping on your side over stretches the shoulders and leads to forward shoulders and depression from cortisol production.
I usually sleep on my left side with a cervical pillow. Yet I always wake up with pain on the left side of my neck. I than remove my pillow and the pain disappears. If I am sleeping on my back for a while with a pillow, I end up with pain in my neck and by removing my pillow the pain disappears again. How strange is that. I do experience some difference when I have rubbed some magnesium oil on my neck before going to sleep. What could be the origins of my issues?
Sleeping without pillow is right or wrong? Advice plz.... I'am sleeping without pillow and im feeling dizzines, cervical pain and headache may be it's because im not using pillow..... Need your expert advice
Don't sleep on side position, sleeping without pillow is best for stomach position sleeper and sleeping on back side is also okay but you must only sleep in this position and don't turn around in deep sleep to side position otherwise neck will feel more pressure and harmful effects will occur.
Hello Doctor, are you familiar with anything that could help dizziness that comes with tightness in the back of the neck. It gets exacerbated when the head is out of alignment with the shoulders (ie: craning neck to look down/forward). Also my sternocleidomastoid muscles twitch and spasm a lot. Thank you!
If I am a back sleeper, and I sleep without a pillow, do I still need a pillow under my knee? Or the pillow under knee is only necessary if I use a pillow for my head? Please advise as I can't seem to find this info online
So if yo alternate between being on your back & on your side what to do ? have tried so many pillow combinations orthopedic / 2 small & nothing in the center etc - still very tight neck & trapezoids etc & getting worse I do spend a lot of time with computers for work & the relief to simply stretch full out is amazing however it cant be comfortably maintained for long periods
Medcline acid reflux sleep system is not available in Europe. What alternative product do you recommend for obese side sleepers with GERD / Sleep apnea who suffer from shoulder and neck pain?
here's a genious idea: when you sleep on your side, do not use a pillow, just the pillow-case (for smootheness) and TILT YOUR HEAD DOWN + SIDEWAYS (result: diagonal displacement). voilà. You just discovered how to sleep like a wild animal! It's the basic fetal position. It lets you stretch and relax your neck muscles, just like when you doze off on a chair, like when your cat/dog curls into a ball. Also, you can use both of your nostrils, since the pillow is no longer covering up your lower one. And you no longer have to wonder "where do I put my hands?", because now you can put them next to your face without being obstructed by a pillow. I've been sleeping like this for the past 5 years. Life changer.
I have piercings, I tend to lay still, either on my back or in recovery position where my head rests on my hand, find pillows make me feel stiff, and I can sleep without issue with my legs slung over a couch (so I can lay my head flat). I once slept on a concrete floor when decorating a new flat and apart from being a bit cold, that was fine, got comfortable on my side, but a pillow leaves me stiff- go figure.
Well I stopped using a pillow today and I laid down on my back and at first it was very painful deep in my lower back . This I found really interesting because it is my shoulders , neck and scapula and ribs that’s are always in pain and cracking and tight but I’m guessing it must be from my back ?? I don’t know. But it has seemed to make it feel much better it’s given my back a good stretch and I was cracking in all sorts of places I haven’t in ages like leg and knee. However I am a very restless sleeper and I sleep on my side a lot too so this is going to be interesting . I have a painful neck hump and I’m always trying to fix it. The issue is so have a very big bust.
I don't know why but I sleep on my back and I need 2 pillow otherwise I wake up with lower back pain anyone know why ? ( I need to sleep more than 4 hours for this to occur and I can stretch in the morning gently reaching to my toe and other stretch and about 90 min after waking up i will be 95% ok)
Wedge pillow is good for sitting as long as the narrow side is going forward. As long as your head is in a neutral position with the rest your spine any pillow should be suffice.
I sleep on my back and in the picture where the girl was sleeping on her back her ears weren't aligned with her shoulders so shouldn't she not use a pillow
Hello doctor! Very great video! I really appreciate the educational and detailed videos you have. I've been experiencing muscle tightness on my left side of my neck and occasional dizzy spells . Can a pillow change possibly resolve this or a chiropractor? Thanks take care!
+motivationaldoc Thank you ! I has thoracic outlet syndrome and had my first rib removed along with my scalene muscles trimmed. I'm not sure if it's due to muscle weakness? The rhomboids is definitely an area I feel pain.
Sleeping without a pillow for over 13 years. Now after xray i found out i have military neck after horrible pains. So i am so pissed off cuz all the doctors i ve been at said i did wrong. Now i try to adjust to sleeping with a pillow. Whum to believe, whum to trust? I am lost!
I sleep on the side and i've always used to support my head with arm. I can't fall asleep in any other position so the pillow is kinda became unnecessary.
I have loads of pillows to sleep on. I have to be sleeping sitting or laying upwards. If I am down flat I go dizzy etc. I have fibromyalgia, migraines, nausea, and loads more. I have lots of problems with neck, head, stomach acid, reflux, etc. What should I do?
I go from side to side & my back. Where & how do I get a support pillow like you showed on this video. Also you are amazing, doc. Thanks for all of the info you give to us all out in you tube land.🙂🌻🐧🐬🦄🌙
Hello Dr. thank you for your nice videos. I have forward head. All mornings I wake up with neck and back pain as all the muscles have spasm. I bought a double wave pillow, but it worsen it! now I have pain right down to my shoulders on my back after using it. I guess it is high! the highest part of it is 11cm. can you please help me with that?? Thank you :-)
Dr Mandell , I need to see your video for a tailbone because I have one year that it's to hard for me to sit down I have a lot of pain . I went to the doctor 2 times but he gived me painkiller , but I feel my bone it starting to get big when I touch it and it burn and my back its killing me can you help me while telling me what to do please ? I can't sit normal anymore & I don't want to go and see my dr anymore cuz I feel that he don't understand me , I want to send you a pick to explain you how I feel when I touch the tail .
Natural sleeping position is side/stomach and arm under head. That way your spine is in a good spot and your arms are, when naturally normal physique, always good size to your shoulder width.
hey doc, I tried sleeping without a pillow last night and I woke up with pain on my back but it doesn't really hurt but it is pain. Is that normal for first time?
Hi sir I have sleep apnea problem so how should I sleep.. i mean my sleeping position should I use two pillows.. because I have big shoulders my neck fall down and my shoulders get sense less/
Tip for side-sleepers: use your own arm as a pillow, unless you are really thin or really muscular it's about the right size and I found it puts the shoulder in a more comfortable position as well.
I've been sleeping without a pillow for years now. And honestly it's 10x better than a pillow. If you experience a back or neck pain then you should definitely do it.
@@aman.s.rathore Hi, i also like to sleep without pillow on my back..but i noticed that my face is a bit swollen in the mornings. Do you also have this?? :)
@@user-gc3rv6jw3n I don't. But I sometimes end up with sore shoulders l because I tend to sleep on them most of the time. Maybe you put too much pressure on your face and need to change your position once in a while.
@@aman.s.rathore No I sleep on my back. So I think the gravity puts the fluids a bit to my head when I lay without pillow on my back all night. If I sleep on a pillow on my back I dont have this. But I like the feel without pillow though. ;)
Wtf is the dude trying to say? I've been sleeping on my back without a pillow for the past year and I've had zero neck problems. It's actually better and more natural to sleep without a pillow
carl copley completely no support to your neck? Cause I've tried it before for the first time, and next day i woke up my neck hurts so bad. (Not a side sleeper btw)
God damn it, this neck pain is killing me😩😩😩 I've tried everything: changing my sleeping position, using towel, using neck brace... I just can't get rid of it. Have gone to Dr and he diagnosed fibromyalgia but I don't believe in it... Alright now let's try sleeping without pillow!!!😟
You don't believe it? Right. The dude has studied for years to be a doctor and you don't BELIEVE him. Like you can choose whether to believe facts or not. This is literally anti intellectualism at its finest.
Neck pain can come from other things...not just how you sleep. Posture and past injuries could play a big role. If you’ve ever been in a car accident and didn’t have it treated...could cause lots of issues...even if it happened 20 yrs ago.
Athamas I have the same problem my shoulder and neck in pain since last year October till now didn’t go away it got worst during my sleep and woke up with lots of pain can’t figure out what went wrong I’m gonna try sleeping with no pillow tonight since none of the pillow works for me .plus pain killer didn’t work either.
