What's the BFG with this cool watch? Can we fix a vintage Focal with a one-jewel BFG 866 movement?

A Swiss movement claim only goes so far. What about this cool looking vintage Focal watch that belongs to my friend Henry. The BFG 866 is an inexpensive one-jewel movement. I go into it hopeful, but with tempered expectations. I do have a couple of glitches to get this ticking again.

Great job. Blown away by not letting your frustrations get the best of you during reassembly -- and your right, it is an attractive watch that was worth the time and effort in doing a service.

Thanks for watching and sharing. I’m not patient by nature. Watchmaking and maybe some age have cultivated that I suspect. lol

Nice work! It was really interesting to see how an inexpensive Swiss movement is put together.

And while I’m not sure it’s fair to say it’s a “bad” movement, it certainly highlights the question of how much stock we can put in the “Swiss Made” label.

Those pin pallets are a bear to get in. I have worked on these movements several times.

They are definitely not service friendly!

There are similarities. I prefer this construction as far as working on one though. Got a Timex?

The dial screws on the top are easy to access but damn small snd difficult to put back in.

I just see my self letting the screwdriver slip across the dial one day.

The last couple days i worked on a Belsis Chronostop with a bfr 670.movement. I can't tell you how frustrating it was, to get the cover plate back on and the anker in place. Finaly i noticed one of the two tiny escapement pins is missing, so i'm stuck at the moment.

Oh no! They can be devilish little movements. I have another that is missing most of the regulating pin so it runs, but not very accurately.

Great job! I'm really curious about the accuracy you were able to achieve with this one jewel movement?

HI and thank you! I had one that was reasonable - about 15 sec per day. This one is … pending.

Did you service the mainspring?
@WMIYC

That’s been a lot of watches ago, but I think I left it intact given how fragile it looked. I recall deliberating whether to or not. Have you serviced a barrel like that one?

You Sir should NOT be doing watch repairs! 😱 In fact you should be a shoe repairer! You have no idea how to tackle the very simplest of pin lever movements, I shudder to think what mess you would make if you were to work on modern lever movements ⁉️ You sir should go back to the job that is more fitting your ability. Watchmaking is NOT for you. Good luck with your day job. 🙈

Haha! Well I’m sorry my hobby work upsets you. I’m not sure I could do shoes justice. I know I have much to learn. I would like very much for you to explain more though and help me understand.

Good point. I contacted the police but unbelievably they said tinkering with watches as a hobby isn’t a criminal offence. He can’t be stopped! Although simple in design, these 4 jewel BFG pallet pin movements aren’t really designed for easy servicing and can be more challenging than equivalent lever movements. Obviously as a watchmaking expert you already know about the complications in the barrel and friction fit wheel, and difficulty in locating pivots in this movement

It's his hobby and you're a piece of work. Instead of sharing your "secret knowledge", which i doubt you have, to help him getting better, you crap all over him. I bet your coworkers "love" you, if you even have a job.
