You can tell that the whole crew has learned that you have to just let Josh finish the tangent and then try to figure out what the unification of Italy has to do with folding pizza. Josh's facts are an unstoppable force.
Josh is a man driven insane by the pure moral relativitism of food, and yet he consistently has infallibly genius takes. Nicole is seemingly the most normal member of the team, and yet she consistently commits atrocities against food based logic and decency. They are the yin and yang that keep the universe in motion.
The shape of the slice is what defines the way you eat it. Square slices like Sicilian sfincione or Roman al taglio you have two non crust corners to start (I always start with the same corner). I eat the crust last because I enjoy good crust like good bread (I always wondered about people that don't eat pizza crust but love the same dough as a bread stick) and the crust acts as sauce free handle like holding shrimp by the tail. Neapolitan with an knife and fork is just easier.
As a person who has been turned off by Mayo for most of my life, I'm just now starting to turn the other way and accept that it makes sandwiches better. It's mainly the smell and glorpy application processes that I didn't like, so a breakthrough for me was getting it on a subway sandwich because that way I can be far enough from it to not smell it or hear its noises, but it still helps round out the flavor and texture of the sandwich (and they don't use margarine which is what I normally use at home). A few days ago I actually had mayo on a sandwich I made at home. So thank you, caller, I needed to hear that Mayo is good actually.
It's amazing, I never thought that Josh would eat his pizza the same weird way as me. For me, it was because I didn't want to throw away the crust but eating only the crust at the end was not delicious. So I would take a few bites of the crust first so that I could enjoy it with some toppings, which turned into this "reverse batwing" method.
I am a "best bite for last" person also. I go crust-first for the most part and save the best looking bite in the middle for last. The type of pizza for sure dictates the "best bite" location and can completely change the method
This was the first episode where I had to stop listening to the audio only version to actually watch, because I literally could not visualize what Josh was talking about with that first pizza slice. Grateful for the visual! Lol
I use French dressing as a dip for my pizza specifically the creamy orange one not Catalina French Dressing. I used to always start eating a pizza by taking my fingers and pinch take off all the cheese and toppings and eat that first then eat the pizza with just the sauce left on it. I did this because I considered all the cheese and toppings the best bite of the pizza and I wanted to eat that first before anything else.
How I eat my pizza depends entirely on the size of the slice. If it's a long and slender slice, I just bite it tip first not doing anything special. If it's a short wide slide, I will either tear off strips or fold it in half. If it's a large slice like new york style, and it's too big for me to pick up, I will start from the crust (i eat the entirety of the crust before I start on the pizza) and afterwards will tear off small chunks and eat them, usually folding the chunks in half.
red pepper flakes is all I'll add to my slice, but then I squeeze a line of yellow mustard on my crust and sprinkle that with kosher salt... like a soft pretzel... you should try it~!!
Nicole would probably enjoy the party cut pizza more from her description of how she likes her "best bite". Donato's is my absolute favorite and they do a party cut on a thinner crust, not cracker thin like Domino's and Pizza Hut. Depending on where you are, a knife and fork are a given with pizza.
42:07 now here's a great chance to talk about a little manga called Delicious in Dungeon which very much is about what if some people decided to eat mythical creatures with all the what-ifs included in this episode more or less. Check it out!
THANK YOU NICOLE! I have eaten my pizza crust first for literal YEARS and basically for the same reasons as she said in the beginning. The construction of a pizza, if you break it down to the slice, the tip is the utmost center. To me it is the best, it has the most sauce distribution, cheese distribution, other toppings..the tip is the pinnacle of excellence. I also eat my burgers, subs, sandwiches ext..crust or edge first. Saving the middle for my last, most perfect bite.
How many people put ketchup on pizza? My polish friends do it and I scolded them severely. Then I had pizza in eastern Europe and I fully understand why they do it.
My dad was born in 1946, and my mum was born in 1957. My mum has been gone for 9.5 years now, but I still have my dad. I was born in 1990. My dad and I have some very different food perspectives some time.
Thinking the tip of the pizza is the best part is absolute lunacy. Everyone knows you eat the pizza down until there is an equal amount of sauce/cheese/toppings part as crust, then you eat the rest like a pizza breadstick. The equal parts crust+pizzaproper is the pinnacle of the pizza. Perfection.
I take a little cheese (usually pep too) off , put it on the crust , dip in ranch , finish crust then eat the rest of the pizza. I do fold towards pointy end but I'm from Jersey so 🤷♀️
12:57 Josh, carbonara is peasant food. You don't think Italians have any rules around carbonara? Ask an Italian chef what they think about putting cream in it, see if he doesn't have strong feelings. The problem with all your arguments seems to be that you have come to the conclusion that people telling you Italians use a knife and fork is people saying "Pizza is fancy food in Italy and street food in the US". Your counter point being "Italians don't consider pizza fancy". You are correct, pizza isn't considered high end restaurant food in Italy, you'll get it in cheap little family cafes...but it IS considered knife and fork food. Italian pizzas just don't have the structural integrity to be picked up by the slice the way New York does. Think of it this way. if you went to iHop and got a breakfast, would you use a knife and fork or would you shovel the scrambled eggs into your mouth with your hands? Is your decision here based on how fancy you think the food is?
Useless comment but I believe Keith Habersberger has confirmed he is a descendant of the Habsburg dynasty. And if you look at their portraits he’s definitely got that face lol (Also love you both and this pod ❤)
It takes my sister and I together to eat pizza. She doesn't eat much for toppings, but she loves the "pizza bones" (crust). I'm not a crust fan, so I get her toppings when she's over eating them, and she gets my pizza bones 😂
Before watching i think prefer my pizza in strips, perfect for dipping and potentially less messy. I used to eat pizza crust first because i learned in science class the crust will be cold first so eating the crust gives the cheese and sauce a moment to become less hazardous and the crust stays soft since its warm.
Nicole, if you like the saucy spot on the pizza, if you’re ever in Ontario Canada, check out Roma Pizza from Hamilton. The whole pizza is like this and it’s the besttttt
I grew up eating L&B. The best thing about L&B is the Spumoni, at least when I was a kid. The famous pizza is good, but nothing to write home about. It's basically the sauce over the cheese, instead of the cheese on top. There are mush better places in Brooklyn.
I'm never adventuring with Nicole, in the world of dungeons and dragons, without a razor sharp two handed claymore, with a plus one enchantment for slashing damage. reason, too many of my characters, either for d&d online or the tabletop version, have been gnomes, that were eaten big harpies disguised as women, because of the fact the dungeon masters both times were anti gnome. later I became a moderator on a dungeons and dragons forum, that had a game room by way of world anvil, so I could tell them what they couldn't have, when they joined the group. also, the other moderators, I was the lead, would vote on whether or not they could have a special weapon or not. it was always no, since they kept the quality items for people who paid premium prices for characters others made, when we were playing their games. not that I'm calling Nicole a harpee or anything, her comment about eating humanoid creatures in a fantasy setting, brought back memories of the all too descriptive moments in which I lost a character or two, to a creature that claimed, it wasn't going to kill my character. this post is a sign, as to why people should never, champaign with a dungeon master, who has mother issues and despite being a man, is a total pro female basement troll.
This reminded me of how I was forced to watch people dip pizza in ranch throughout middle and high school. I had to look away or vomit every time! Also, people that perpetuate the whole "ranch or blue cheese?" thing with chicken wings. It completely undermines all of the effort from the sauce.
In Mexico, and you can see it when you go to a pizzeria because they put it on the table, we eat pizza with Worcestershire sauce and Black Maggi Sauce 😂
My take. I love pizza. Cold pizza is diferent than hot pizza. sometimes i make the pizza and just wait for it to get cold to eat it. it just hits diferent. Hot or cold I like my pizza with knife and fork. Uncut. Just eat it like big round steak. Cut piece by piece until the final bits where i make a slice and eat it by hand. Like the cherry on top. U never want all cherries. U want the cake and then the cherry on top. It feels like that.
living in upstate NY in the 80s my mother and sister worked at a Greek pizza joint called 4 brothers where my sister was obsessed with dipping the crust in there creamy Greek dressing, was delicious as i remember
It totally depends on the pizza. Not only the style of pizza but the specific dough of where you're eating. The topic of how to properly eat pizza has to be specific to a type of pizza and/or a specific place's pizza
So, I am a normal eater for most pizza I get, BUT I fold anytime I get new York style. Weirdly enough, my favorite Neapolitan place has such a thin crust that you pretty much HAVE to eat with a knife and fork or it will disintigrate in your hands.
As someone who hated mayonaisse until very recently, i blame the fact that it is used too heavily in very cheap food. 9/10 times I had a garbage sandwich, they tried to cover it up by adding way too much mayo. Therefore i started associating mayo with disgusting sandwiches.
I’m from NY & I usually cut the crust and a bit of the pizza off, then I eat that first while dipping it in the grease that’s on the rest of the pizza. Then I either fold the rest or eat with a fork & knife if it’s a sloppy piece 😂🤷🏻♀️.
I fold at first because it's the most efficient method of packing as much pizza into my face for that quintessential first bite. I then unfold as I get closer to the crust because the bread gets to be too much the focus.
If you need to dip your pizza in something you need better pizza. The only exception is garlic fingers in Donair sauce if you don't know what those are gimme a reply I'll tell you
I eat my crust first too. I however have a dipping sauce, and I pull the crust off the pizza, and I dip the crust like a bread stick. Then I eat the rest of the pizza. And there will usually be a little sauce with it too with the crust. I've never known anyone who does this too. But I have known people who just eat the back first.
I think I'm kind of strange. My favorite pizza is either pepperoni or all meat. I do eat crust first generally, but not always. But I eat around a piece of pepperoni, because so then I get my favorite bite last.
I fold a New York style, but I like the fold. So if I'm eating a pizza that doesn't fold well. Like thicker crust (Dominos) or a crispier crust (Frozen). I do the two slice sandwich, because it mimics the fold. With square cut Detroit or Sicilian I eat "normal". I haven't eaten Chicago deep dish but maybe knife and fork for that? I imagine it would be a huge mess to try and pick that up.
I treat the crust like a breadstick. Sometimes before I eat the pizza, I tear off the crust and dip it in whatever like a breadstick. Sometimes I eat the pizza first. It depends on what I'm craving first.
If you see people eating pizza with a knife and fork it might be because of teeth issues, If their front teeth are missing they can't take a bite out of a slice and have to cut it into bite size pieces
How I eat my pizza: I take 2 slices and put them together so that its like a sandwich with bread on top and bottom. I like that i can hold the pizza anywhere and i dont get sauce or cheese all over my fingers. LOL Like a calzone without the sides! Oh and tip first. :P
Pizza is mostly about sauce for me. That is the main flavor and everything else just enhances and adds texture. I absolutely love alfredo sauce on my pizza. With Alfredo sauce I'll eat pretty much anything on my pizza
I do like the Travolta method, more pizza in my mouth = more better... Also, I like to do a reverse fold, but you can only do it if it's a plain cheese pizza and it's cooled down a bit. It's the NY fold but folded the other direction, this way the cheese is on the outside and it hits your tongue and the top of your mouth and makes it more flavorful
Please consider making full use of technology. There are people outside of the U.S. that speak English and may want to call in, but can't make the phone call. I think it may be a good idea to have a website that allows people to leave voice messages for this and other podcasts. You might get more interaction and greater online visibility. Thank for for reading.
