Ever wonder why there is a hyphen on an address in Queens, New York? What about why street numbers repeat themselves? Queens has Avenues, Roads, Drives, Courts, Streets, and Terraces. At first glance the street grid system of Queens seems confusing. But its city grid is not as complicated as it looks. In this video we are going to talk about how to navigate and understand the Queens street grid layout and how to interpret a Queens address. Queens is the largest borough in New York City in terms of land area so these tip can be useful (some day).

I worked in Queens for 4 years and still couldn’t figure out the rd vs av thing. Kudos for you for understanding. It’s like learning a whole new language.

Thanks! When I first saw the street numbers I was so confused as well. I can't believe that's how they decided to name them.

As a lifelong resident of Queens, I'm familiar with this, but I didn't know there was a systematic intention for the alternative names. Fascinating to learn that they baked into the naming system which streets are newer than others.

OMG, I’ve been wondering about the hyphenated addresses in Queens since I was a kid! The pattern is simple! BTW, numbered streets in Los Angeles also do the street > place > terrace thing too.

I understood the numbering system instantly, as it's not that different from where I'm from in St. Petersburg, FL. Ours doesn't have the hyphen, which can complicate things for people unfamiliar with our area.

To muddy the waters some more, some historical Queens street names survive in the subway. Examples include 33rd St - Ralston, 40th St - Lowery, 46th St - Bliss (7); and 21st St - Van Alst (G).

@@UrbanCaffeine i think so. I grew up in Elmhurst, which used to be called Newtown by the Dutch, and some of the streets had names that sounded Dutch, like Van Horn.

Growing up in queens, I’m so used to drives and lanes plus the hyphen street address. Didn’t realize our street addresses is weird even for other boroughs. No wonder my Brooklyn friends making fun of our street addresses. Just like this video. It is so easy to figure out where I live. Lol.
@jamiecinder9412

I think Queens' addresses can most easily be explained as something of a prototype version of the address block numbering system that the US uses outside of the Northeast. Especially since the USPS no longer requires the hyphens in mail going to addresses in Queens.

great video! there was one minor part i thought you'd include though, how in queens a queens address wouldn't typically be "Queens, NY" but the neighborhood of queens it's in, like "Astoria, NY" or "Forest Hills, NY" because i also wanted to know why that is, and why some queens addresses DO just say "Queens, NY"
@trien30
@trien30 День назад
People write Queens, NY when short on time but I've noticed people write Flushing, NY like it was in 1800s where you at one point only had Flushing, NY, Jamaica, NY, Hempstead, NY and Newtown, NY. Queens were settled by the Dutch where there was a lot of farmland and swamps and marshes. You read it right: Hempstead used to belong to Queens, not Long Island. Iirc. In other words, even when not considered as part of the neighborhood of Flushing, Queens, some people still do write it, because that was how it was like 200+ years ago, but then again some people write Flushing, NY for wherever they live because of laziness when they actually do not actually live in the neighborhood of Flushing but in Maspeth, NY for example. So, people can actually write Flushing, NY if they live between like 45th Avenue in Flushing, NY all the way to Union Turnpike, in the Fresh Meadows neighborhood of Queens. But from Union Turnpike all the way to 236th Avenue, in the neighborhood of Rosedale, people can write "Jamaica, NY" as a part of their addresses like 200+ years ago.

I once spent an hour going up and down a residential building in LIC looking for a friends apartment not realizing I should've gone to 47th street not 47th Drive (turns out all I had to do was go to the building across the street). And I'm actually moving to 52d Court in Maspeth (which you showed in the video)....I KNOW that's gonna cause problems when giving directions. Yah Queens has a quirky address system.

The question I still have is why do most Queens mailing addresses include the neighborhood rather than the borough? Everything in Brooklyn is Brooklyn, NY, but when sending something to Queens it's usually Flushing, NY or Glendale, NY or Long Island City, NY. What's up with that?

Just earlier today I was looking at the apartment my parents lived in when I was born, and saw it was on 69th. then noticed that a block to the north was... also 69th. needless to say, I was a bit confused, but now it all make sense (ish!)

Should you decide to venture to Queens by auto, be advised the school zones run until 10:00 PM. I got a ticket in the mail because on a rainy night I missed a school zone marking on the street on Thompson (road from Van Dam to the 59th Street/Queensboro Bridge) b/w 30th Pl and 30th St… which I now understand thanks to Thea 😂
