Most technicians also repair the vehicles they diagnose. The situation you work in is rare.

cfmcc83 I work at a very busy automotive repair facility. I am a technician. About three hours of my day is diagnosing vehicles I will never work on. Due to the fact that I am a tech I get to pick and choose what I fix. Add every shop I’ve ever had any experience with there are substantially more mechanics than technicians. Maybe it’s a West Coast thing.

Alexander Wood you are absolutely correct . I am a technician and the shop owner has two locations . I’m the only tech for two shops . It’s rough and it’s very difficult to find a good qualified one that knows his stuff .

Great explination. I always thought technicians used more electronics to troubleshoot and mechanics used previous experience to solve the problem.

Nowadays it is both. Vehicles are not near as simple and easy to predict issues on as the old ones were and you can carry the title of "mechanic" or "Technician" but to do well in the industry and make good money and be a valued asset for the company you work for...you need to be good at both! Diagnostics is not easy work but anyone working on cars should always be applying themselves and looking how to improve their skills in diagnosing, any monkey can pull and engine out, fix it and reinstall and do many other things in between but being good at doing both things is the key to success.

I've always thought of technicians as overly self-important mechanics and as a marketing thing for shops to charge more labor. When you think a technician you don't think of Grease Monkey. I'm a mechanic but I also do rear end rebuild transmission work heavy engine an electrical. I consider mechanics that are Parts Changers only who do brakes and ball joints all day more in the lube Tech category

@@seanl6832 okay then, well i will give you my personal opinion. first things first when you first enter the field you are going to be the grunt and the bottom of shop. you will feel like you're not getting paid your worth or you're being over worked. this is normal since most people who enter the field even with schooling don't know how to do a basic diagnosis. what will set you apart is your willingness to learn. you take the bs and focus on improving you will succeed and shadow a trust worthy technician usually a guy in his 50s who's near the end (these are the guys that usually help out the most). once your shop trusts you they will promote you and then you'll be a tech. again youll feel like you're being over worked because you will still lack proper training and experience. the main thing i recommend is dont get into bad habits and ALWAYS STAY EDUCATED IN THE FIELD.... now lets talk about where to work there is independent shops, dealerships, city, and third parties. you will not probably get a city job until you have more years under your belt, forget about that, but they do offer the best benefits and pay. then there is independent shops you'll get paid hourly here but probably learn the most. dealerships are strictly one brand and will have a lot of warranty work (which pays trash), but if you know how to write your stories you will flag mad hours.then there is third party shops like firestone and pepboys i can't speak on the behalf of these places because i've never worked in one before. but overall if you're good at what you do being a tech had potential to make you six figures especially if you go into a luxury brand like aston martin. i hear their oil changes pay like five hours

I have been an automotive repair technician for over 30 years ASE Master Certified, recently retired and I have to say that there is very little difference in an independent shop between a tech and a mechanic, until you get to a dealer situation. Usually the master techs do the diagnostics at the dealer and some repairs but at an independent shop techs do both diagnostics and repair the vehicle themselves. The only drawback to being a dealer tech, is the warranty jobs... where you don't make a whole lot of money on warranty work... But for the love of GOD stay away from Dorman parts... you have been warned lolz

I have a question. You've helped me out before on some videos. But I'm doing fantastic at my job at the Ford dealership. Service Manager loves me and says I have some major skills. I'm already over halfway done with my first four certifications as a "quick lane tech". My service manager is always sending me to help the diesel techs out whenever I have downtime. I'm just curious as to your opinion between being a diesel mechanic and auto mechanic. Pros and cons kind of thing. Thanks man

Dude take my advice . Learn as much as you can but Go to technical school and learn the trade . You'll gain the knowledge to work on any Make and Model vehicle Plus you'll have a better chance at one day opening your own business . That's where the real money is at .

I see you as both, leaning more toward the Technician guy. The nuts and bolts guy is definitely on the way out or reduced to minimum wage.I want to get my 4runner transmission serviced. Guess what, requires the dealership to use a scan tool. I know you are a solider in real life. Are you a Black ops power player?

when a diagnostic technicians recommendation doesn't fix it I do my own diagnostic because I don't want to go through it multiple times if he couldn't figure it out right the first time I've had them had me replace the same part twice on bad diagnosis and it was a valve cover gasket leaking the whole time

We have begun turning away work that has many hours listed in the book. We can make way more money filling that time with smaller more profitable jobs. Having a bay tied up for 2 days is a drag on the business.

as a truck driver owner operator I have enjoyed your videos because I have thought about becoming an mechanic but; my particular interest has been to learn all of it and especially diagnostics, electronics etc, and my experience thus far has become discouraging after talking to various service managers and one instructor at a school because the interesting thing is young man coming out of high school have gotten training certifications from the dealership and ASE certifications but yet getting rapped by the tool truck and yet I have purchased many tools of various kinds and weird pliers that are curved and have no knowledge what they are used for and even got 8 point sockets in a 300 socket set that threw me for a loop and from what I hear is that I cant get into this field of work unless I go to some dam school that's going to rape me for thousands before anyone will hire me. My concern is falling back 20 years and starting something new and cant make it due to the cheap income for the sake of just maybe a chance to do something different and on top of that people in the comment section complain and bitch at one another and some just give their opinion and get attacked and I have to wonder what life is going to be just working around a bunch of bitching in a shop because a man has a different tool than the other. I actually enjoy going down the highway being my own boss and got the cb turned off 99.9 percent of the time just because I really don't want to hear the bitching and fighting over politics, religion, dispatcher this and company that and it is a relief getting away from the rest of the world and just making my own mistakes and learning from them myself. I personally think any job is going to have its up and downs but; for some reason this great idea I have about getting into auto work makes me feel like im fighting harder to get into hell than into heaven. It seems like I would be better off just being a part time Wal-Mart greeter and on welfare and everyone that bitched in my family about how rich I am will just have to stop asking me for money because it seems like if I got nothing either ill be left alone in my own sweet peace and tranquility with nothing but my own sweet thoughts about nothing that tomorrow will bring.

Be careful of Dud New Parts, it can misslead you on diagnosis, you will soon be hunting a ghost problem. Happened to when I replace a Crank and Cam Sensor, New part was bad(OEM). No power and Hard start, No engine light was a an all day work. Turned out to be a bad O2 sensor. Even with a live data, its tricky....

Automotive Mechanic is an Old world term in 2019 they're called Parts changers . Automotive Technician is one with knowledge of an Automotive component or components . Example Transmission , A/C , Electronic , Engine , Steering and Suspension etc . ASE certifications are a way of determining an individuals aptitude in a respective component . Be careful with individuals working at your local auto parts store claiming to be Automotive technicians . Why would an individual who can be making 25 plus dollars an hour flat rate at a descent automotive shop be working at an auto parts making 8.15 an hour .
@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway
@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway 5 лет назад
I don't know about easy. Took me years to get there and have had many set backs along the way. To this day I don't make anything close to $25 n hour, but then Again, I don't work in a Metro area. I work in the middle of BFE.
@hero2d0s
@hero2d0s 5 лет назад
@@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway You're not the only one . For the past 15 years Automotive manufacturers have been implementing newer technology in their vehicles at such a rate that even their technicians are having a hard time keeping up with the changes and tools . The implementation of fiber optics is starting to become the medium of choice in interfacing communication among ECM's , BMC'S and TCM's . Being an auto tech since 1996 my current challenge is not so much the innovations but 1-the amount and cost of diagnostic equipment and constant up-dates and 2-vehicle owners not having the $$$$ to pay for proper diagnostic and repairs . Yes I live in a metro area down side to that is most people go and buy another vehicle at a buy here pay here the minute you tell them the repair cost is 1,000 X amount of dollars . So I know first hand the felling of working in BFE people driving late model car and the minute a repair is needed they go ballistic when you tell them the cost of running a diagnostic . Been there done that .

Mechanic and technician are the same just pure EGO I'm a mechanic technician and there is no difference we are in it just the same but different name to make myself look better. A good mech or tech diagnosis and fixes his stuff. And what he is talking about is a serving writer and they go check and see what's up and give a ball park of what the symptoms are to the mech tech.
