What's the difference between Proof, Brilliant Uncirculated and Bullion coins?

The Royal Mint produces three types of uncirculated commemorative coin finish: Proof, Brilliant Uncirculated and Bullion. Proof coins are the highest standard of commemorative coin produced by The Royal Mint. Brilliant Uncirculated coins have a higher standard of finish than Bullion coins, without the extra finishing and detail provided on Proof coins. Bullion coins have a similar standard of finish to circulating coins. Find out more in this video. www.royalmint.com/striking-sta...

The difference between BU and Proof is very tiny on some sovereigns I own. Bullion next to a BU or Proof looks very weak in comparison but they are two different things. I'll be showing this comparison soon on my channel.

We could tell the difference yet I am with you that it is more of a commercial product than mintage standard. Royal mint is by far the only mint that carry three tiers. It is the top one, even the proof krugerrand is a little shy compared to the proof sovereigns and Britannias - closet and closer now.

So you want to get political? Okay, here's my little rant: It's absolutely true about immigration. I'm in favor of migration, legal migration that is.... because laws do matter. Legal immigration is totally fine and should be encouraged within certain limits. I have no idea what those limits should be. (Under time pressure? See the wonderful essay by Davy Crockett: www.101bananas.com/library2/crockett.html) Let's look under the hood, shall we? While I believe we should welcome all strangers to our respective lands, it must be lawful immigration. Why is that exactly? First, I've attempted dual citizenship in a variety of countries and this is the accepted norm. Every country has rules and you just can't waltz-in and expect others to serve you at public expense. I was surprised at the universality of this concept. They even insist on a certain value of assets, to prevent freeloaders. Imagine that! They want talented newcomers, educated, those who will benefit their society and culture. I admit, I was a bit shocked. In other words, in most countries taxpayers are NOT expected to pay for all the world's financially challenged.... whether it be health care, food stamps, housing subsidies or what have you. There is a limit to available resources, thus there needs to a limit on benefits. Make sense? No? Isn't it true that what I give to you (or what I am forced to give you) I cannot give myself or my family, or even donate to a cause I personally believe it? Right. So YOU have more right to my money than I do... is that what you're saying? I don't think so. I support plenty of charities... but I do so voluntarily... AFTER I've checked it out. I have no interest in supporting scammers or people here illegally. To the people jumping the line, I say this: Stand in line, guys and gals... wait your turn! Others waited... so can you. Perhaps you do believe in force. Okay, fine. Are you aware of where a little force always leads? It leads to a LOT of force, otherwise known as Tyranny. This is not classic picture of a policeman helping the kids across the street anymore...oh no. This is full armored vehicles and SWAT raids by the thousands... for a possible Mary Jane offense. It wasn't always like this you know... and the level of force is getting worse. Perhaps this is just a pet-peeve of mine -- Seems most 'immigration without restriction' supporters believe others should pay for their misfortune, virtually forever. Not only pay for their initial escape (from a bad government perhaps) but for their continued existence. But why does it need to be government forcing the issue with their guns and threats of jail? That's really my question. I met a tour guide once who liked her former of government, saying: "They paid you to live!". Really, I asked? Where is this guaranteed income wonderland? (It was St. Lucia, before bankruptcy forced a change in government) Here's my final point. That's certainly more room for charity, churches, and community organizations to assist those less fortunate (you know, institutions that flourished before the growth in welfare states) who provide services not provided by government force. When government gets involved, as I pointed out above it's essentially at GUNPOINT. They buy votes from Group A by taking money from Group B. At first it's never very much money. Eventually.... it's everything! You might as well say "from each according to his ability TO each according to his need", a bankrupt moral philosophy that has led to the death of between 40 - 60 million people in China alone , under Mao. Exactly like that. Then there's Stalin, Hitler and all the other tyrants. And now it's in South America under Maduro. Is that what you want? FYI -- When the income tax was passed it was 1/4 of 1%. Who could object to such a meaningless amount? You know, "to help the people". Strong words... hyperbole maybe? Grab a map and see for yourself how far the world has gone into socialism.... and broke. (No fair mentioning Norway either.... those are not socialist governments... those government are capitalist but have a single socialist program like health care. They're also quite small and don't allow immigrants like we do. Whatever welfare they have couldn't exist if they allowed unrestricted immigration... the math just wouldn't hold up) This idea of FORCE at GUNPOINT needs addressing. Even in the U.S. try disobeying a government regulation, government edict or not paying your taxes or property related fees; see what happens.... eventually the GUNS show up. Not right away, of course. But they do. That's the force I'm talking about -- government coercion. Do this or Go directly to Jail. (No collecting $200 either) Charity needs to be voluntary, not at gunpoint. THAT'S the point I'm trying to make. And that's the same point the Founding Fathers insisting on writing into the Constitution... if anybody cares to listen. Next time you hear the name Davy Crockett, think of what he wrote in "not mine to give": www.101bananas.com/library2/crockett.html

Apparently NGC doesn't know the difference as they are grading the 2017 strike on the day plain edge as a proof even though it's a BU coin, they are also using the same proof designation on the 5 Sovereign, so proof and BU are just the same yet we pay a premium for a proof coin
@DriftinDoug

Their "bullion" strikes are what our Canadian Mint calls CIRCULATION or BUSINESS strike, only struck once, hundreds per hour, flipped out by machines into containers where they strike one another, getting scratched.

And also the2017 (not sold in any set) Quintuplet Sovereign ? please include handling, number of strikes and frosting, polishing of die and blank please. I am trying to understand why NGC is grading these coins as MS DPL and just can't get my head around t. Thank you.

Usually new bullion that’s remained in its original packaging or kept in a protective capsule is called brilliant uncirculated, since it wasn’t circulated or handled. Proof is extra striking and higher relief with extra shine, as described in the video.

Can you tell the coins are bullion, bullion uncirculated, or proof by simply looking at it? I got some silver coins from someone packaged in a nice fancy box, but it doesn't say about the quality.
@royalmint

Most Proof coins have a frosted finish, which is the most obvious distinguishing feature. Strike quality is also an important factor - Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated coins having a higher definition. If you are unsure, we would advise contacting a BNTA member (www.bnta.net) who would be able to identify the finish and, should you wish, value your coins.

Love the Britannia bullion coins, especially the 2021. They usually come with some defect though like a scratch in the matte finish or a round dent in the rim. Maybe I always get the bargain bin coins, it's still disappointing to get a new coin from the dealer and it's already nicked in the capsule.
@sandercohen3309
@sandercohen3309 3 года назад
It's not disappointing... It's *UNACCEPTABLE!* The Royal Mint produces and sells the poorest quality bullion and proof coins of any of the world's mints, yet generally seeks to get the highest price for them. Other mints manage to pack bullion coins without putting fingerprints, scrapes, dents and scratches on them before they even leave the factory. The Royal Mint are smugly sitting on- and abusing their monopoly of the UK market, especially considering British coins, being sterling, are exempt from capital gains tax. Such things should be an embarrassment for the Mint, especially when compared to the quality of bullion coins from other world mints. But given the Mint seem to have little interest in coins in general and are content to ride off the back of their 800-year old ‘reputation’, it's not surprising that they have such poor quality. It's a real shame considering how beautiful their designs are. Their coins have so much potential. I certainly won't buy from them until they start caring about their customers and the quality of their products.

proof=polished stamp; prooflike= have lesser mirror finish than proof, here its called brilliant uncirculated (weird); bullion= have a normal stamp finish like circulating money (no polishing). more or less force to bring the coins in its shape, the raw rounds are polished or not.

They confuse BULLION, as a quality of strike, with the proper dictionary definition: Gold or silver in the lump or by weight (Oxford). They confuse TOOL, their nickname for DIE, with the proper dictionary definition: Thing designed to help or enable the hand(s) to apply force, esp. in industrial operations. They use a hammer and chisel (tools) to make a "tool" (actually a die). Oh well....

I wish the U.S. Mint still treated proofs delicately. They are struck twice with polished dies, but besides that don't get that much special treatment. The U.S. makes millions of proofs per year, and plenty with minor errors or imperfections that lower their quality. @The Royal Mint has my respect for producing such fine coins.

@ashleybishton742 3 месяца назад
No their value isn't increased cos of their weight. It's increased cos of the numbers. Increases also happen if you get them graded. Proofs can afford to be graded you want pf69 or pf70s is what I have learnt. Each come with their own rarity Nd there for if you have low mintage you have a very sought after coin more sought after if you have pf70 as that's the highest grade you can get. I got 2 pf69s so I'm happy with that. Just starting out but learnt lots. Still got lots more coins to complete the set some I will never be able to afford for example the pieforts il need them at some point and now they are like 2k each. When I come to get them theyl be around 10k cos everyone will have been brought up and will require you to dig deep if you want them. My 1990 is really sought after with pf69 1 sov. If was pf70 it would be even more special and rarer. We're talking like better quality than the proofs in the video mate so like the best of the best finish basically can't get better or cleaner than it.

I've been reading so many comments on various coin collecting forums that the quality control at the royal mint has gotten really poor recently. So many people who've bought proof coins and piedfort coins from the royal mint have reported blemishes, dings and scratches on their coins. It's something to be aware of considering how expensive their proof and piedfort coins are. I really hope the mint reviews their quality control practices and brings it up to the standard required. Buying from them at the moment seems to be a crap-shoot. It's such a shame as they produce some of the most beautiful coin designs in the world (if not the best in the world)...

Ha,yup. I just received 8 ‘22 Britannia coins and all are milk spotted. You would think that by putting so much effort into the design process that they would take care of the milk spotting,arghh. I like to look at coins for the beauty but now I just have them in a safe. Just canceled my order for the 10 oz. Completer because I’m afraid it might look like shit. I think any new silver I buy will be either RCM or Perth mint products. Greetings from British Columbia.

@@Whateva67 Well.... RCM has also Problems. Exept Maples from the Year 2018 on. Since 2018 they have a shield against Milkspotting. I would say............take your glasses and focus ur view direction australia and others. Perth Mint, Royal Australian Mint..........No Problems at all Germania Mint from Poland..........excellent Quality CIT Mint (Liechtenstein)...........gorgeous Scottsdale Mint(US)..........also good St. Helena Coins........not perfect, but better than RM AND .......Mexico Libertads. Watch out, that the dealer delivers in Capsules...Then ok. I got an Video about completers a few month ago(July 2021) on my channel. Shit like hell.... Headline..........."Schande über die Royal Mint" English subs aviable Several Videos on YT about that 300 pieces Queens Beast Proof Set. Very expensive. Over 50% was send back, cause the customers are giving this kinda shit back to the Mint.. To be Honest. The 10oz seems to be better. Rumors says, that they are minted in US(Sunshine Mint?), wich makes sense. Nuttn against the RM. But only for Goldcoins and Bars.
