Learn the most common differences between Spanish in Mexico and Spanish in Spain. Mexicans and Spaniards can communicate with each other all the time. However, sometimes we use different terms to express the same object or feeling. Learn the words that are different in each country. There are many more terms that are different in Spain and in Mexico, but I picked the most popular for you. Remember that these words do not interfere greatly in communication. I have many Spanish friends with whom I talk on a regular basis. We have different accents but we understand each other and when a term pops up, I ask or they ask. My friend Guergana goes to Barcelona a lot and she has many friends. She has never had problems communicating. The only side-effect of this Spanish difference is cultural and linguistic enrichment. With this video, you will not only learn Spanish terms particular to Spain, and terms particular to Mexico, you will also broaden your Spanish cultural knowledge and baggage. We use both "bañarse" and "ducharse" in Spain but they mean different things. "Ducharse" means "to have a shower" while "bañarse" means "to have a bath".

But what I've heard is that in Mexico, instead of "ducha", they say "regadera". Instead of "ducharse", they say "darse un regaderazo". In Chile, we only say "ducha" and "ducharse" for shower and to take a shower, respectively.

Shifty Whoever said Mexico was part of the USA? I was referring to the fact that, after English, Spanish is the second most spoken language here, and that there are certain traits to that, particularly the use of anglocismos. This has nothing to do with Mexico being part of the USA, so I have no idea where you got that from.

I like to say spanish from Spain and spanish from latin america is similar to the differences in english from the U.S. and english from England. Same with french from France and french from Canada.

Same as with English, there are many dialects / accents around the world today. We Spaniards are now only about 10% of the Spanish speakers, the majotiry of whom are Americans, both North and South Americans. We have different accents in Spain, like they have in the UK and Ireland, and there are many dialects and accents in America as well. A Mexican does not speak the same way as an Argentinian or Chilean, and almost every country /area has its own way of speaking, but we understand each other with no problem.

Stephanie1119 I'll give a small history fact about spanish origin and its pronunciation. the "spanish" spoken in Spain around the 12th and perhaps 14 th or 15th century was more fluid and less sharpy as it is now, like portugese. Many of the languages spoken in the iberian peninsula, like catalan, galician, portugese, valencian and even aragones are more closely related to portugese, as their phonetics stayed the same through the centuries and didnt change like spanish. however, the spanish phonetic and pronunciation changed a lot during the 15th 16th century, this because spanish borrowed different words from arabic, italian and other and so grammar and phonetic laws came to existing. However, there is still people in spain that speak spanish in a more fluid way that have kept the original accent in their families, mostly from the mid to north of spain. I give an example of Javier Barnen's spanish.

The problem for Spanish learners is that, although the pronunciation may be clear among many Mexican speakers, the use of grammar and vocabulary in Mexico is, in many cases, pretty non-standard. For instance, the use of the preposition _hasta_ in Mexico can be tricky even to other native Spanish speakers: _La tienda abre hasta las siete_ for Mexicans mean that the store opens at seven while in standard Spanish it means that the store is open until seven.

Being from Spain, I loved your explanation. I'd just like to add that very often, we know both pairs in both sides of the ocean, it's just that one of them is more common. For example, it's true that in Spain "enfadarse" is the common word... but "enojarse" could be used as an educated synonym. That's why sometimes we are so entranced and captivated listening to Latin Americans. Very often they sound to us Spaniards like speaking in a poetic or very educated way, which is fascinating. I love it.

"Esposa" means "wife" in Spain as well (and "handcuffs" too by the way) but it's a very formal word. In spoken language 99% of the people will say "mujer".

In México "Esposa" also means "handcuffs" perhaps the difference is that we say "Esposas" because normally they come in pairs. At least the ones I ´ve seen :)

We say it in plural in Spain too. "Le pusieron las esposas", no "la esposa" y sí creo que es porque siempre son dos.

En España decimos ordenador porque lo copiamos del francés, mientras que en América se usó la palabra estadounidense.

En italiano usan la palabra "computer" que sí está tomada directamente del inglés. El español americano utiliza "computadora", incluso "computador". Ambas palabras son utilizadas también en España, aunque en un sentido más restringido (referido a grandes equipos de cálculo).

Los grandes ordenadores siempre los han manejado profesionales que estudiaban los manuales del fabricante estadounidense y el término utilizado en la traducción era computadora, lógicamente. El resto decimos 'ordenador', copiado del 'ordinateur' francés.

En España sí les llamamos churros, pero hay un tipo de churros que son cilíndricos que les llamamos porras (como las de los policías). Porros son los cigarros de hachis y marihuana, no les aconsejo ir a una churrería y pedir un porro.

Y depende de la parte de España, en Albacete les decimos churros, en Madrid porras. En Albacete la porra es la parte de la rosca de churros que tiene mas masa, el churro del centro de la rosca.

As for "jugo" and "zumo" something fun y happens. When we squeeze a lemon what we get is "jugo" but once it's in a glass ready to be drunk we call it "zumo".

jajajajaja this is so true! my boyfriend is a colombian, and he's amazed because both of my source for studying spanish is spain and mexican spanish while simultaneously learning his colombian slangs and words, especially his hometown medellin. I still can't speak spanish well or fast enough, but i think knowing this differences since the start of learning a new language, give me a broader perspective even in the eye of a native speaker. I even learn about the root of history behind the word like vos and ustedes from old castellano. Just love it. Proud. Thank you Anna for the lessons ♡

Winny Tessalonika You actually can still hear "Vos" in Spain in some aspects but it has a different conjugation and meaning. In Spain if you speak to someone using "Vos" it's shows more than just respect, it almost shows that the person you're talking to is somehow superior to you. That's why you only will hear that form of "you" in films and theaters about medieval times. We don't even use "Vos" for our royalty anymore ( thank God 😅 )

Winny Tessalonika That depends on so many factors... First of all Spain is a very divided country in all senses you can think ( geography, language, culture, history, etc ). There were 2 royal families that claimed the Spanish throne, the Habsburg family and the Bourbons family ( which is what we have today ). Most people supported tbe Bourbons but some did not, so some people feel like this royal family does not represent them. There're also a lot of people who're "Republican" and think that the idea of a "King" or a "Queen" that is somehow superior to the commoners is old-fashioned and stupid ( like myself ). So to summarize you'll find every single response you can imagine if you go asking one by one in Spain about the Royal family, that's the truth. Of course you'll find more pro-monarchy people in the rural areas than in the big cities who are most of them "republican" or just "don't give a fuck" 😅

I noticed many people in Latin America, well educated, make a lot of spelling mistakes. I think the Spanish in Spain differentiates the sound of "Z" vs. "S" which makes spelling easier.

@@gdani92 I love Latin America and enjoy my business trips there. The people and the culture are awesome. However, most of the people I work with there, even degreed Engineers and Finance professionals, make basic and frequent spelling errors in Spanish because there are no differences for them in the sound between the letters "S" and "Z".

Vamos a hacer una comparación: -El español tiene casi la mitad de sonidos que el inglés, por lo que se requiere el doble de tiempo para hablar correctamente o entender el inglés al español. -LA gramática del español es más compleja que la del inglés, pero las normas gramaticales pueden ser aprendidas en una semana -La variación linguística entre los ingleses de diferentews países es incluso mayor que el español y portugués. Esto significa que aprender un inglés no garantiza que vayas a entender a los de otro país. La variación linguística entre el inglés británico y el inglés estadounidense es la misma que entre el español y el italiano. Una persona que aprender el español puede comunicarse mucho mejor con unna persona que habla portugués, de lo que lo haría una persona que aprende el inglés y decidiera comunicarse con una persona de otro país. Conclusión, puedes aprender las normas gramaticales del español en una semana, pero aprender el inglés en definitva requiere el doble de tiempo que aprender el español porque no tiene reglas de pronunciación y tiene el doble de sonidos que el español.

Travis Austin your videos "están muy bien" or "son muy buenos". If you want to express a quality you have to use "ser" if it's a circumstance, then you use "estar", good or "buenos" is a quality but well or "bien" is a circumstance :)

Es muy importante, ya que hay mucha gente que está convencida, y así se lo hace creer a los no hispanohablantes, que son idiomas distintos. Debido a esto, es común que crean que si aprenden español en un país de Latam. ya no van a poder hacerse entender en España, y viceversa. De hecho, ni siquiera hay dos formas de hablar español, hay miles, como pasa también en el inglés. Para mí, un dominicano habla muy muy muy diferente a un argentino, pero ambos se consideran español americano. Y todavía más allá, en un mismo país hay muchas formas distintias de hablar. Por ejemplo, yo soy del norte de España, paso los veranos en el sur (Málaga, Córdoba, etc.) y muchas veces tengo que pedir que me hablen un poco más despacio o me repitan alguna cosa o alguna palabra que no conozco, y ellos también hacen lo mismo conmigo. Es decir, esas diferencias son normales, es lo que ocurre en cualquier idioma que se habla en tantos lugares diferentes y con culturas tan diversas. Y no pasa nada, todos nos entendemos al igual que los británicos se entienden con los estadounidenses o los franceses con los belgas. Saludos!

Me too lmao. I’m of Salvadoran descent, and unfortunately have not learned that much Spanish. I used to find the European accent funny because “corazón” sounds like “corathón” 😂. So then I thought every time they used the “s, ce/ci, z” sound, it sounded like a “th”. But that’s because my uncle told me Spaniards call Spain “Ethpaña” and I found it funny lol. But now, as I’m attempting to learn it from Latin-American, (or Latinx) and European Spanish sources, I’ve begun to kind of like the Spanish accent. Obviously the th sound, but also when they use s’s, (to me at least) it sounds kind of like a slight “sh,” which I kind of like for some reason lmao.

@@holaadios2263 Yeah I know lol. When I was first introduced to the European accent as a little kid, I thought that the sound made by the S and Latino Spanish Z was always pronounced like a th sound. My uncle said that they say Ethpaña, which being a younger child, I believed because I didn’t know about it. Now I know the S is pretty much the same anywhere, and Z, Ce, and Ci are pronounced with a th sound in Spain, and I guess Europe.

I have found that my inability to make the correct sounds in Spanish prevent me from feeling confident about having conversations with people. I have travelled to Spanish speaking countries, an have tried to have conversations with locals, but a good lesson about this would really help. Figra Ardham People tent to understand Spanish from spain more easily than latin american becuse they speak more fluid pronuncing every letter. Latin Americans tent to skip or not pronuce letters like the 's'. Spanish tent to also speak slower.

SAN REY well thats not entirely true, latin americans usually change c and z for s but they dont skip the pronunciation of any letter, I think its more about the accent they use, Im from spain but I have some latin american friends and I can tell you that that one and some vocabulary are the only differences I can be wrong obiously, I've never been at south america , but one of the main differences between spanish and most other western languages is that we pronounce (im not sure if pronounce is correct) every single letter minus the h I also have to say that we spanish dont speak slower, I do usually speak very fast, so in my opinion its something up to each person, but again I've never been there so maybe I'm wrong

Yaponnk Es verdad lo q dices, pero he vivido en colombia. Tengo amigos de argentina, mexico, chile y de centro america y te puedos decir q sus pronunciaciones y sus gramaticas no son tan claras como la de los españoles. La gramatica en españa es mas dificil. Te lo digo porq he ido a colegios españoles y hablo practicamente como un español. En españa enseñan mas verbos y conjugaciones, por eso se mas variado gramaticalmente hablando. Y en cuanto a pronunciacion los latinos, sobre todo del centro, no suelen prounciar las 's' finales de palabaras y no tienen diferencia entre: s, z,c como has dicho tu antes. Tambien abrevian articulos y palabras. Lo cual marea y confunde a los q estan aprendiendo el idioma, foneticamente y por escrito. En cambio en españa, menos en andalucia, eso no pasa ya q la mayoria hablan si abreviar y pronunciando algunas 's' y demas

La última: la "distinción" es la MEJOR FORMA de NO tener FALTAS ORTOGRAFICAS entre la S y las C-Z por eso en España es NORMA CULTA: las letras más presentes en nuestro vocabulario tienen que tener sonidos distintos para facilitar la ortografía (una pena que no se explique en Latinoamérica).

Yo soy de Ecuador y siempre usamos el verbo coger. Lo mismo pasa en Colombia, Perú, Puerto Rico, República Dominicana y Cuba. Es realmente muy, muy usado. Agarrar es tomar algo con fuerza, con las garras. Incluso he escuchado la palabra coger de muchos amigos mexicanos, pero que viven aquí en EE. UU. Cuidado con enseñar cosas equivocadas. Coger depende del significado que le des.

Pues estas hablando de el español de tu país, pero en México decir la palabra cojer si suena muy raro y es poco usado y eso de que mexicanos en Usa lo usan mucho no es verdad, pero México siendo el país con mas hispanohablantes en el mundo 130 millones sin contar los 40 millones que están en Usa, por esa razón se toma en cuenta o se da mas importancia al español mexicano. Ella no dijo nada erróneo, lo será para ustedes pero todo lo que dijo es correcto.

En España está bañarse y ducharse, depende de si vas a darte un baño (en una bañera o como decís vosotros una tina) y ducharse es una ducha xD Y lo de piso... en español de España se parece más, porque aquí también se dice apartamento. Un departamento es una sección de un hotel, una oficina, un centro comercial... Y lo de "subir para arriba" y "bajar para abajo" es un vulgarismo, no todo el mundo lo dice y cuando lo dices siempre está el típico que te dice: "No se dice así, es redundante".
