In Germany we call the Theraphosidae "Vogelspinnen" which translates to bird spiders. But then we call the Lycosidae "Tarantel" which is similar to the word Tarantula. That always got me confused.

I will add that the downward fangs are not so primitive but specialized. The tarantula can use its fangs along with its bulk to drive the fangs down into terrestrial prey. The side to side fangs are better for latching on to prey in a more 3d environment like in a web where it "pinces" free hanging prey in relation to the spider's body

Great video Richard! A couple of additional points: - Another term for the cephalothorax is the prosoma, which some say is the preferred term for arachnids, as the term cephalothorax means “fused head and thorax,” but there is neither fossil nor embryonic evidence to suggest that arachnids ever had separate heads and thoraxes. Also, the term opisthosoma is another term that may be used to describe the abdomen, and is also thought to be technically more correct by some, as arachnids have hearts and respiratory organs in their opisthosomas, which is atypical of an abdomen; however, given the ubiquitous use of the term abdomen, and its easier pronunciation, it seems that fewer people argue this point - Most seem to think that the tarantula illustrated by Maria Sibylla Merian was actually intended to be an _Avicularia_ species; if you look closely, you can see that they are illustrated with their characteristic pink toes. This is entirely speculation on my part, but if you look carefully at the illustration you’ll notice that the humming bird is depicted as being consumed right next to its nest, I think it’s at least theoretically possible that the humming bird met its demise either defending its nest, or returning to its nest and not realizing that the tarantula was nearby. Also of interest is that this illustration is the reason that the _Avicularia_ genus got its name, which comes from the union of the words _avicula_ meaning “little bird,” and the suffix _aria_ meaning “pertaining to” (both in Latin) - In addition to the infraorders of _Araneomorphae_ and _Mygalomorphae_ spiders, there is also the suborder _Mesothelae_ which includes a single family - the _Liphistiidae_ - which is worthy of note. Much like the _Mygalomorphs_ the _Mesothelae_ have downward facing fangs, lack trachea, and are primitive in their use of silk. However, the _Mesothelae_ also have segmented abdomens, much like an ants, and spinnerets in the middle of their abdomens, instead of at the end, making them the most primitive spiders of all. Also of note is that not all trapdoor spiders are _Mygalomorphs_ as some belong to the _Mesothelae_ suborder - To any unfamiliar with the term “setae,” that is the more technically correct term for the “hairs” on tarantulas and other arachnids. Technically speaking, only mammals have true hair - Just to make it a little more clear, the scientific definition of a tarantula is simply any member of the family _Theraphosidae_ - there is no other criteria. For instance, if theoretically a spider were to be discovered with no setae/hairs at all, and no silk glands, and no venom, but it was concluded that these were all secondary adaptations and the spider was actually a member of the _Theraphosidae_ family, it would still be a tarantula, no matter what the dictionary definition said

Love the videos, sir. If I may make a slight correction: That particular engraving was meant to depict a Pinktoe eating a bird. The scientific name avicularia literally means bird-eater. Still not a common sight, but probably more likely that an arboreal T nailed a bird, than a goliath getting one. Thanks for the videos. Also, just for fun, I like that different regions have their own styled common names for T's. Birdeaters, like you said, for the New world. Baboon spiders for many African species, Earth Tigers for many Asian species (Even arboreal, which is confusing)

Oh, and as for the Bird Eater's painting by a naturalist let us not forget that they would be more than happy to stage a scene since many were more interested in the scene and making it striking against actually knowing or caring about the habits of their subjects. There is also the possibility that in the past, when there wasn't an encroachment of 'civilization' and nature was more widespread that a tarantula could be seen sometimes, opportunistically munching on a juvenile bird that fell out of its nest.

Very interesting video. I already knew most of the information given, but it was still very complete and informative. I have a question tho, why are downwards facing fangs considered primitive and sideways facing fangs considered more advanced ? I mean is the only reason because the entire genre of Tarentulas are primitive spiders that haven't evolved a lot, or is there an actual advantage to sideways facing fangs ? On the contrary instinctively I would tend to think that fangs like Tarentula's would be more efficient and dig deeper into a prey that araneamorphs' fangs.

I absolutely love this channel for this very reason it was so informative you told me everything about tarantulas. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos with your gorgeous spiders

I love this video. It’s very educational. While I don’t have any spiders as pets and rarely see them in my apartment ( when I do a catch and release as they do spray for roaches and other pest types of insects) I do enjoy learning about tarantulas.

Great video, fun to try and name all the different species. Some awesome camera work really showed the beauty and diversity. My favourite was the lava spider, looked unreal, I know I failed at the name and you probably won't give me OBT or Gooty saphire but in my defence over 2000 species.
