Yes, sometimes I feel like I'm not being very healthy with not much fruit and veg. Sometimes you can find one or two items in convenience stores (eg overpackaged bananas in plastic bags!) or if you can find a supermarket. I think I stress about it too much too - you don't want to make a faux pas when you know the culture is more polite than you're used to! And yes - absolutely right about the rubbish bins. The number of times I've walked around carrying rubbish all day...!

Great - hope the list helps! Yes you're right, good point, kimchi isn't always vegetarian - for me I find it doesn't taste fishy so I have it anyway (I can't stand fish, but I don't avoid gelatin etc in things I like - like sweets!), but if you're a strict vegetarian it's safest to avoid it! :-)

Matt R I’m in Japan now & been enjoying lots of Fanta Grape! 😄 Yes, I do that all the time. Not sure if it’s a faux pas but I drink wherever I need to (when you’re walking around all day you have to!) but just don’t eat on the street/ on trains. I have spotted one or two Japanese people eating snacks as they’re walking but most people don’t do it. (Plus there are hardly any bins for your rubbish!)

I think as a foreigner you get a free pass on some of the ettiquette rules if you do something wrong! :-)

@@cakeswithfaces As a Japanese guy, I have to say that it depends on what etiquette rules you broke. The principle rule is "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." So I think that the most important stance as a foreign tourist is observing what the Japanese (do and) "don't" rather than to have such a 'free pass'. Anyway, thank you for providing very accurate pieces of information about my country Japan as always.

Hope you can reschedule soon! There are so many ramen places and they're all good! (even/especially the cheap ones!) I think you'd be most likely to encounter spring onion in Japanese food. I sometimes ask for meals without meat/fish/fish flakes, with varying success! Some places are ok with it, some not. And in some other cases, eg when you order on a vending machine, it's tricky to make requests, so you might need to pick off the onion or eat around it. You can try asking "ねぎなしNegi nashi" = without onion. There are also printable cards here (they're designed for allergies, but it might be the simplest way to ask) justhungry.com/japan-dining-out-cards Also I noticed some vegan restaurants have dishes without "pungent vegetables" (eg onions, garlic), because some Buddhists don't eat them. Many places have picture menus so you'll be able to tell which are most likely to be onion-heavy! Hope that helps!

Yes picnics are fine, and you can just sit on a park bench and eat too. Just don't eat while you're walking along the street, or on most trains (but long distance trains like the shinkansen are ok to eat on).

It might be quite tricky as this information would probably be in Japanese on the label. In vending machines you won't be able to see the back of the labels (drinks are also available in convenience stores). I'd recommend doing some research into common sugar-free brands of drinks, so you can recognise the labels when you get to Japan - or maybe save images of them on your phone so you can check. Lots of green teas in bottles are unsweetened, and water's often available in vending machines. (Be aware that there are also lots of flavoured waters, although you can usually tell the difference from pictures on the label). Other terms for sugar-free or low sugar drinks are "calorie off" or "zero calorie", although that would probably be written in Japanese. If you fancy learning some Japanese, if you learn to read katakana that may help - it's phonetic and once you can sound out words, they're western words. Or learn to recognise the kanji for sugar in the ingredients or nutrition info (I think it's labeled as just carbs) so you can check labels.

@@cakeswithfaces great advice. I like the researching drinks before and putting images in my phone. That’s prob. my worst worry because I’m always thirsty and water gets boring. Love green tea though. 😋

I haven't really tried the Indian curry in Japan - although it's good to know its there because they always have non-meat options!
