Hi! My name is Abhinav and I am originally from India. I live in the UK and have been researching about Roma people for over 5 years now. Apart from their culture what really fascinates me the language they use. Romani is very interesting and has some similar words to Hindi and Sanskrit.
In this series, I will try and share some of the most common Romani words used in different Roma communities.

In anglo romany we say for luck : boc or bak continental roma i think say baxt . Sounds like an abrieviation of this word buch-talo . Keeping in mind that romanes was not untill recently a writen language with correct spelling and thet english welsh and scotish gypsys broke away from the main roma group several centuries ago , acents change and words mutate and sound different . Ultimatly it was words that gave the romani origen of india , its facinating stuff

You should go to Finland and meet romani there. They have been there in isolation hundreds of years, they have the language, they have been protected in many ways, they are the only ones still living with same traditions and costumes. - They are proud, many are rich. They are living with purity rules and respecting elders, they are always pure and clean. Contact them. They have organisations that is easy to find. Finland was the first place that did dna studies at 1990 when first dna home kits were available, and covered that they are from Northern India. India used to be different at years 1000-1500 when romani left.

@sannih5015 najis tuke friend. I'm afraid I don't know Finland from Sweden. but I know some romani entetd them country's via Scotland some 500 years ago and they speak the same dialect of romanes as us that stayed in great Britain and dispersd around her colonies . I know this because it says so on the internet but I also know it personally to be tru as I have conversed with some scandinavian romanichal hear on youtube and nearly understood what they were saying .

@@coryparni3620 Scandinavian Romanichal? 🤔 I've heard it all now 😂

@Immortal_Inkwell yep that's right . They enterd Britain some time in 1500's the group split up some staying in Scotland and some boarding a boat to one of them Scandinavian country's ( can't remember wich one ) . Of coures they didnt say romanichal or roma back then , only ROM but they took the nav ' romanichal ' the same as we did at what ever romani congress that was .They still speak a dialect more close to Anglo romani then to romanes chib of you roma . Look it up if you don't believe me , it's spelt different . Why so hard to believe? We been in australia since convic times , and the America's very early on in the colonisation . We left you roma in eastern Europe a very long time ago . It's only more recent arrivals Un the uk identify as roma . ROM is the only common word of that type. Not roma . We are only in recent years being told we have to say roma as the whole ethnicity and that ' romani ' s the language . We're not roma .

It's interesting that English divides up phrases like, "good luck," "God speed," and, "congratulations," into their own individual meanings and uses, while many other languages just use one word or phrase for all of them. For instance, the Hebrew equivalent to, "bachtalo," would be, "mazel tov."

The meaning can be summarised in pillars; the main pillar representing the polar ideas of baxt (pronounced [baxt], bah-kht) meaning 'honour' and ladž (or laʒ, pronounced [ladʒ], lah-j) meaning 'shame'. It is honourable, in some Romani cultures, to celebrate baxt by being generous and displaying your success to the public

Not a Roma, but can provide some background on the confusion from grammatical standpoint. Bakhtalo - The root word is 'Bakht' which comes from Waqt (time in Arabic or Persian). Bakhtalo is one of the declensions of the word, so the -alo ending is a sort of suffix which provides a qulaifier to the root word. Bakhtalo is not a sandhi of word Bakh and talo, as bakh by itself does not mean anything related to luck or soul. For example, "Maarna' is the infinitive form of the word 'Maar' which can mean either to hit or to kill. It does not mean - Maar na - don't hit/kill. That is wrong way of splitting the word. The suffix 'na' denotes that the verb 'Maar' is in infinitive form, and in this case 'na' doesn't mean 'No'. Hope this helps.
