Turbo engines certainly have numbers that look good and can game the EPA ratings. In real world use it all falls apart. The power isn't bad, but can be inconsistent, especially once you get heat soak during towing. The mileage is the thing that always disappoints. I've had the Ford 3.5 turbo, the 5.0 and a Ram with the Hemi. In everyday use the 3.5 got notably worse mileage than the v8 trucks. Currently have a 2020 Ram with the 5.7 and we're averaging 21 MPG in mixed use, but mostly highway. The Ford 3.5 never saw over 18 MPG in mixed use. We'll get 17 or 18 if it's all running around town. The hurricane also runs it's boost at 26 PSI; that's a whole lot of boost. Most turbo sports cars hover around the 14-18psi range with peak boost usually hitting the low 20's. Longevity has to be a real concern stressing an engine that much.
@UnyonRing
@UnyonRing 5 месяцев назад
It's not really "gaming" anything, they just burn more cleanly, that doesn't necessarily mean that it gets better mpg. Horsepower at the end of the day requires a perfect ratio of fuel and air, more power needs more fuel but higher pressures make for a more complete combustion which helps reduce emissions. High boost pressure isn't inherently less reliable. Those boost pressures have been used in diesels for quite awhile now. I have high hopes for this engine. Being an I6 it has some inherent simplicity compared to a v8. Even if you have to replace a turbo every 100k miles that's not that difficult to do typically. Turbos are on the outside of the engine so it's not like you have to Crack the thing open to swap a turbo.
@jcrbama
@jcrbama 5 месяцев назад
@@UnyonRing I should have said gaming the EPA mileage ratings. The mileage looks good on paper, because you can stay off boost during the test cycle, but once real world use kicks in, the actual mileage suffers. High boost pressures are inherently troublesome for gas engines. You can't compare diesel and gas engines. Outside of burning a fuel, they are comprehensively different. The Hurricane has been in the Grand Wagoneer for a decent stretch now and the warranty return numbers they've had are definitely a cause for concern. There's hope for the engine, but FCA's track record and the current state of the issues they've already seen, I'd give it a few years for them to work out the kinks.
@UnyonRing
@UnyonRing 5 месяцев назад
@@jcrbama yeah it largely depends on how you drive it. I regularly get 20-21 mpg mixed use Dailey driving with my 3.5 ecoboost. Drops down to 9mpg when towing my trailer. I disagree that high boost pressure is cause for concern though, as long as predetenation is not occurring the engine can be designed to handle the higher pressure, the same way that diesel engines are designed for higher pressures. From what I've anecdotally heard from a service representative the hurricane seems to be doing well in the grand wagoneer, that car just has tons of other issues that it ends up in the shop for hahaha

Its all bullshit. You will find out the real world ramifications several years in when it is already too late. This is by design. Just wait for the first 2000.00 maintenance/repair bill and of course you cant fix it because it is much too complicated now.

Fuel economy is a little disappointing there. Guess I don't see how emissions could be lower burning the same amount of fuel. I have a 2012 Ram with the Hemi, which gets about 13 mpg in town and 18 to 20 hwy regardless of how conservative I drive it. But It has been one of the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned. It has about 105K miles, and I have not had a single problem with it. Yes, it sounds great, especially when you romp on it, but since I mostly drive conservatively, I find it is very quiet as well overall. If you want to talk about a quiet engine, drive something with the old Chrysler 318 V8 and see if you can hear it or feel it running too. While it may not have made a lot of power, it is one of the most silky smooth and quiet running engines of any vehicle I have ever driven.

naturally heavier vehicles get lower gas mileage than lighter vehicles do a base version of the Ram 1500 is 4,800 LBs where as a fully loaded 2005 Lincoln Town Car for example is 4,500 LBs and averages roughly the same fuel economy 19 MPG combined as the Pickup Truck which is 300 LBs heavier in base trim oh and there's the first gen town car with over 1,300,000 miles on its odometer oh and right now according to Kelly Blue Book a low mileage 2010 Lincoln Town Car signature L is worth 10,300 as a trade in which means you could put down payment on 2 2025 Toyota Camry XSE's and have 2,300 left for spending money granted full price with everything included is 51,000 roughly the same as the Signature L Lincoln Town Car is 53,000 base price before taxes etc. granted that trim averages 44 MPG combined with a 16 Gallon tank so depending on driving style it would take you about 10 gallons to get to Washington DC from the Boston Area for example or about 5 Gallons to go from Boston to NYC depending on traffic and driving style of course the Town car has a bigger trunk than the Camry by about 6ft3 and the fully loaded version is over 2 Ft longer

@HenryCalderonJr 5 месяцев назад
Turbos barely increase fuel consumption they pull more air to increase power that is the purpose. It has more power and consumes the same fuel considering the weight of the current ram with the trim level. Also it depends what the drive ratio is. A lower ratio means better fuel economy but less towing capability. What is the tow capacity of this particular truck you were driving? They vary based on options added. I will wait a couple of years to see reliability of engine long term. I will miss the rumble of the Hemi for sure. 3 generation owner here

@jimmyaber5920
@jimmyaber5920 5 месяцев назад
Not on gasoline engines. Diesels can use more oxygen with the same fuel quantity to a point but gasoline must remain near stoichiometric so more air means more fuel. Turbo benefit is to use a small engine operating at lighter load and requiring less fuel while engine using near non turbo air consumption level and low turbo pressure and resulting lower fuel. When the load is higher then the engine works at overfed rate with larger engine torque and HP but uses bigger engine fuel quantity to do it. The air/fuel ratio has to be near stoichiometric for catalysts to have the exhaust gas composition that supports catalytic function. When throttle application is great the low emissions is waived and the a/f ratio can go rich as that suppresses knock and cools exh temp to avoid catalyst melt temps. Cylinder deactivation was a way to make larger displacement engines have lower consumption when needed engine power was low. A v8 running in 4 cyl mode at higher throttle is runing in a lower specific fuel consumption range compared to an 8 running with greatly restricted low throttle opening. Low throttle causes inlet drag that slows crank and it takes more fuel to accelerate crank on power stroke that follows. One of the mpg benefits of diesel is no throttle to create the inlet drag at lower power requirement operation. When diesel engines operate at high load their air fuel ratio approaches the same ratio as gasoline and consumption rates are much closer.

This is the future we all need to get used to. Started with the mid size and now onto the full size... everything we drive is going to be a 4 cyl turbo... and then, in a few more years, hybrids and then in a decade, electric. There's a emotional element missing without all the fuss and noise, sure, but it just is what it is and unless you're good driving old vehicles forever there's just no way around it. Excellent video here, real world testing is always the best.

2019 Ram 1500 gets 19 city 22 Highway in the Hemi and have seen 24 mpg at times. I tow a 5900 lb trailer and get 11mpg. Ford F150 3.5 EcoBoost 7 mpg pulling same trailer. Turbos will never make up for displacement when it comes to longevity and mileage.

I got 18.7 mpg City/Hwy with my 2021 Ram 1500. 4x4 Limited Longhorn with 3.92's. My 2016 Ram 1500 4x4 Big Horn. With the 3.6L V-6 and 3.23 Gears got 21 Mpg city/ hwy. It would get 32 mpg going 55 mph on local roads.

My 3.5 TT Tremor averages 18mpg. With mid octane 89. I let it idle after long running or towing for a few minutes to minimize heat lock. I know someone who has 250k on the same engine. I’m not concerned in the least

You should be.. if you actually use that truck to tow and have fun in the bush, that engine will have problems. Should have got the 5.0 if you really wanted a Ford...

I just ordered a new Sierra SLT 1500 with the 3.0L Duramax diesel. The only two trucks I looked at were GMC and Chevy. Even with this new engine I didn't bother wasting my time looking at Ram. And perish the thought of ever considering a Ford. Toyota and Nissan were never even in the running.

To hold on to my 5.7 hemi. Gets a bit better mileage than the 2015 F150 3.5 ecoboost I traded fir it and is a LOT more fun to drive!

I never understood why we are so infatuated with getting rid of V8 engines when the alternatives don't actually provide a whole lot of MPG gain if any at all.

That’s the thing for me. You mentioned character. I don’t care about mpg, price, and all that other jazz. If my vehicle doesn’t put a smile on my face before I even get in it, I don’t want it.

I'm getting older and loud obnoxious exhaust tones annoy the piss out of me. I have been looking at a 2025 Lone Star 4x2 in Delmonico Red Pearl model with the 3.0l TT with the Big Horn Level 2 and optional 20 inch wheel package and 12" infotainment screen, $56k even though it is still expensive but isn't out of sight. It sure beats my 1999 Dodge Dakota with the 5.2l in fuel economy which averages in at just under 14mpg in the city and 16mpg on the freeway. If I get 25 years out of this newer truck It will pay for itself like my Dakota has.
