White powder and sediment on the bottom of your pool can be very frustrating. Your chemical readings are perfect yet there's this strange film on the bottom. You brush and vacuum but it comes back. What is it?
The problem might be the use of calcium hypochlorite (granular chlorine). As you chlorine and shock your pool the calcium will settle to the bottom.
If you find this to be the case with your pool, you may want to switch to sodium hypochlorite which is the liquid form of chlorine. Bleach will work as well.

You didn’t really say how to get rid of it other then vacuum, The problem is I’ll vacuum it it’ll run through the vacuum sock and go right back into the pool and then settle again later so nothing is getting accomplished so do you have any other suggestions

Brilliant explanation. Doesn't bother me. My pool does a great job of picking it up in the filter.

I'm a professional pool guy. I work for ASP of Augusta. This condition is rampant in my area. Most comm pools and about half of the residential pools around here are stubbornly clinging to trichlor feeders and cal hypo. Cal hypo is so cheap as well as trichlor tabs (versus non-stabilized cal hypo tabs). The problem we face is high CYA caused by feeding too many trichlor tabs. The common misconception about any chlorine is whether or not it's stabilized (contains CYA). Trichlor feeders are notoriously difficult to gauge rate and as the tabs erode and feed into the pool the concentration of what's being fed changes (not the bather load). Minor dilution with heavy backwashes doesn't do a thing for CYA concentration when you have a 200k pool that sees ~100 bathers a day. Precise injection is the way to go. Manually dose CYA to 50ppm and let it fall over the summer. Liquid, while having a lower concen, a short shelf life, being a bitch to transport, reacts with sunlight quickly, and blah blah blah, is really the best route other than chloraking's SWCG or an itellichem and filtered surge tanks. Now, any granular shock will cause precipitate and that sucks. I fight it everyday. People just don't want to change or can't afford it. In an effort to mitigate high CYA (being stingy with tabs), we manually shock with cal hypo. The boss bought a couple non stabilized feeders by CCH and they really help but they only handle 80k so we're constantly filling it. Non stabilized tabs aren't cheap either and it's May and we've gone through two buckets on a 200k pool already. Awesomely less precipitate and a more steady FC concentration over time. I feel like I'm living in the Stone Age here in Augusta. Technology is just plain difficult to implement here.
@cleanpoolspa-ultimateswimm6373
Chris Roush You bring up many good points, especially about the overuse of trichlor tabs. I have taken care of several commercial pools, the last one was the YMCA pool in Oregon. Fortunately that was an indoor 100k gallon salt pool. I didn't need to worry about CYA levels. I dialed in the Chlorimatic at 45% and kept the salinity at 3500ppm allowed to it come down to 2500ppm, then added 100 lbs. of salt to increase it back to 350ppm. 45% was great for 5000 - 6000 swimmers per month. I completely understand the issues with tab feeders being dialed into feeding and not bather loads. Injection works great, as you said, simply because of the ability to gauge the bather load. I'm very grateful of what my pool route and being a commercial pool operator taught me and the experiences I've had but sweating it out in the 115 degree heat of Arizona for 10 hours a day is long gone. Most of my clientele are home pool owners. I do get the occasional commercial pool operator and always love to hear their stories as well.

Clean Pool & Spa - Ultimate Swimming Pool Care Guide We maintain or try to maintain about 250 residential pools and over 40 commercials. Right now only two of those commercials have SWCGs. Gotta a 25lb ChlorKing on one and a Hayward 6.0 on another. Both of those pools leak, too. Not fun keeping up with the salt ppms. I just got home from installing another CCH non stabilized tab feeder. It should help.

Hi, I am constantly plagued by this white powder and I wanted to mention that this year we got a new liner for our inground pool, the water is crystal clear, and I have only shocked the pool once this entire summer. Yet I vacuum every other day due to this powder. My chlorine and ph are correct. I use tabs. Why would this be happening even though I don’t shock my pool?

Never put granualized chlorine directly into the pool, fill a ten gallon container with water then place the Calcium Hyperclorite into the container and give it a good stir, Let it stand for an hour or two then pour the clear fluid into the pool making sure not to let any of the thick sludge from the bottom of the container enter the pool. Do the same with Soda Ash ( PH up) and you will never have problems with cloudy water.

I have the same issue I battling. A white, powdering film that lined the pool overnight just after I used dissolved granular chlorine. My granular chlorine apparently does not contain calcium. It is Sodium Dichloro-S-Triazinetrione so what is that white substance? Could be salt? I had to clean the filter grids which were impacted w/that white, crusty material. I have a inground liner saltwater pool. After sitting green all winter it has formed crystal like rocks all over the liner jets lights steps metal and fiberglass. I'm floored I've never seen anything like this! It literally has the texture of 40 grit sandpaper every square inch. It doesn't rub off with your hand or the vinyl liner brush you have to scrape it with your fingernails. I haven't added any chemicals yet dont know if I should drain the pool halfway or what. Please help I worked in the pool business in the early 2000's when salt systems first came out. 3 yrs in the business and I never seen nor heard of this happening. Any insight would be greatly appreciated
@cleanpoolspa-ultimateswimm6373
Hi CA. It might be a couple of things. First is high calcium hardness in the water with sustained high pH. Sustained high pH can cause CH to fall out of solution and form scale. You can try to maintain a lower pH at 7.2 to see if the CH will eventually loosen up. Obviously you don't want to use a pumice stone on vinyl. Next could be high CH with high phosphate level. You can Google that for much more info. You can try a combination of lowering the pH and using a phosphate remover. Good luck.

If you vacuum and the sediment or particles are coming back into the pool, you probably have a filter issue. Without knowing the type of filter you have, it's time prohibitive to go through each filter and their intricacies.

If you vacuum and debris is coming back into the pool, that's consistent with a bad filter. The question does not state the type of filter. Check your filter and make sure it's correctly working.

Mine is a new plunge pond, no plaster just concrete and stone. I have calcium powder all over. How do I get rid of it. Is it caused by the lye in the concrete. I am using muraic acid.
@cleanpoolspa-ultimateswimm6373
Cindy Banks It could be from the lye from the concrete but there could be many reasons why the pool goes cloudy. Are you sure it's calcium powder and not something else? Is it floating or on the bottom of the pool? Hard water with high pH can precipitate this issue as well. Without any readings it's hard to say with any degree of certainty what's going on.
@cjbanksful
@cjbanksful 9 лет назад
Clean Pool & Spa - Ultimate Swimming Pool Care Guide Hi Robert It only goes cloudy when I sweep it. towards the drain. If I just run the waterfall it is crystal clear. But my alkalinity readings and ph are off the chart. I have had bromine tablets in it for over twenty-four hours. There is no reading of bromine, no matter how many drops I add. And the white powder just sits on the bottom.
@cleanpoolspa-ultimateswimm6373
Cindy Banks Thanks Cindy but I need the actual numbers. All of them. "Off the charts" could mean 8.2 or it could be 11pH. TA could be 150ppm or it could be 400ppm. Bromine tablets can take a week or more to full dissolve and register on a reading. If you're going the bromine route you need to have a bromine bank. This is when granular bromide is put in the pool then activated with chlorine. For the cloudiness, when you sweep, it could be the high pH is precipitating the cloudiness due to the concrete. There are videos on RU-vid on how to get a bromine bank.

You are the FIRST person who has known what is going on with my pool! Thank you!! My question is when I go to liquid chlorine, should I still add the chlorine tablets in the skimmer or are those also part of my white sediment problem? Is the liquid chlorine to shock with only? I'm new to the pool world and it's been shockingly hard. Or should I leave the chlorine tablets out altogether and just use liquid chlorine? Thanks in advance. My pool place has been less than helpful. :(
@cleanpoolspa-ultimateswimm6373
Hi Heather. Pools are extremely easy when you know exactly what to do. To answer your question, we need to know what tabs do. They're meant to dispense 1 ppm chlorine per day so your chlorine doesn't bottom out. This buys you a little time so you can manually add chlorine. They also contain stabilizer, but that's for another time. You can use liquid chlorine with confidence as it will kill the organics in the pool. One quick and easy way to recognize if someone knows what's going with pools is this. Tell them you have a green pool and you'd like to know how to clear it up. If they start out by saying "Oh, that's easy. First, bring the pH and alkalinity in line, then shock the pool. Add some clairfier and phosphate remover and maybe a couple bottles of algaecide." Run away, and fast. That information is guaranteed to cost you hundreds. I'm available for personal coaching and if you choose to purchase a 1 hour consultation I'll also email you my eBook "Clear Blue Pool" which covers everything you need to know about pools water maintenance. I do this for first time pool owners to help them get off to a good start. Very helpful video. I'm in the last stage of winterizing my AG pool now. After fine tuning my TA and PH. I also raised my Hardness because it was low. Vacuumed and then added the 1300g of HTH Super Shock...all based on pool size of course.... 33,330 litres. Stirred the chlorine well in half a bucket of warm water. Water became somewhat cloudy for the first time all summer.. Pump running for at least 24hrs now. Sediment in various areas of pool floor,. Well, I watched your video...It's early October about 15 deg.C avg air temp. here in Ontario. I'm hoping I can clear that stuff up tomorrow by vacuuming to waste before I put the tarp on for the winter. My concern now is that my chlorine level won't be high enough. Should I just cover it up and not worry about it?
@cleanpoolspa-ultimateswimm6373
You'll need to test the chlorine to determine if it's high enough. Also, dilute granular chlorine in cold, or cool water, not warm. Heat destroys chlorine which might be why your is not high enough. Thanks for watching and have a great day.

Add the granules to a large bucket of water, stir, and sit for 30 mins. Scoop the clear chlorine into the pool, and repeat 3 or 4 times. Time consuming, but then the calcium, or 90% of it, stays in the bucket. Flush the residue down your loo when done

If you chlorinate the pool with this bleach, you do not need to leave the chlorinate tabs inside the pool correct? Or am I mistaken? I just don’t want to make any mistake. I’ve only started having a pool 1,700 gallons since 3 days ago. I have been reading for 3 hours each day to learn as much as I can, it’s been overwhelming. I find myself having to re-read and memorize all these new terms.
@cleanpoolspa-ultimateswimm6373
Hi Galaxy. Taking care of a pool, no matter the size, is one of the easiest things you can do as long as you're properly taught and trained about easy 1st Grade Level pool chemistry and how it applies to every pool in the world. Take tabs for instance. Why would you need tabs and what do people say about them? Here's the truth. Tabs are meant to dispense 1 ppm chlorine per day so your chlorine doesn't bottom out, until you can get back to your pool and manually add chlorine. But they're not meant for your sole source of chlorine. They contain stabilizer and that will increase with constant use of tabs. If it gets too high you'll need to do a partial drain and refill to reduce the CYA and get it back to the original level. You'll NEVER NEVER NEVER make a mistake!!! What will happen, though, is you'll do exactly what you're taught, but what you're taught must confirm and conform to already established pool chemistry in order to have a perfect pool. 99% of people are not taught this. What they are taught is to add this chemical and that chemical without the basic understanding of anything. When that happens, failure is immanent. I have many resources on my site about this and they can be found here: www.clean-pool-and-spa.com/swimming-pool-resources.html. Please consider taking a look at it. Thanks and have a great day.

@cleanpoolspa-ultimateswimm6373
@cleanpoolspa-ultimateswimm6373 10 лет назад
Really the only thing you can do with hard water is not use cal hypo or anything that may increase the hardness. You can also keep the pH a bit lower, between 7.2 - 7.4. This will keep the water a little more acidic and decrease the chances of mineral deposits at the water line. Or to have some pool water trucked in. For well water you may need a metal sequestrant. Have the pool water tested for metals. Metal sequestrants that are based on HEDP, phosphonic acid and/or its derivatives are the most effective. Look into Jack's Magic Blue, Purple, and Pink Pink Stuff, Metal Magic, Metal Free, & Metal Klear. Metal sequestrants don't remove metal from pool water. It holds it in solution until it can get filtered and backwashed out. Metal sequestrants break down over time and get filtered and backwashed out so you may need to add a bottle once per week or when your pool needs it.
