Thank you for taking one for the team! I have not tried any of them. After watching most of your videos, I think we have similar palates, so I guess I will pass on those if I run across them. Then again, since they are under $50, I may grab one just to satisfy my curiosity. Happy Halloween!!!
O_o That Chris Walken impression was ON POINT. If the bourbon thing doesn't work out, you have a solid career in mimicry. (A career in which you can also drink bourbon)
I love what you guys do with blind. It honestly is such a fantastic thing that I wish I saw more in beer reviews. I will say though, I wish the blind was done with both on the same whiskey. You're blind anyway. Why not riff on each other of your thoughts of the same instead of no interaction based on tasting different whiskeys. Huge issue for me. The best of constructive criticism. Love the videos. Cheers.
Darwin's Beer Reviews Hey, Darwin, thanks for the comment! We get this quite a bit and the reason why we don't try the same bourbon at the same time is to eliminate conformation basis. If one of us said "I smell bananas", then the other person is much more likely to smell the same. Much worse than that, if one of us said "I don't like this one at all", the other might think twice about liking it. The beauty of our results is sometimes what I pick first, Sara picks last, and we don't know that's the case until the reveal. Thanks for watching! Glad to have you aboard!
Today's payday and I stopped at the store and I gave a serious look at Redemption WHEN MY PHONE WENT OFF WITH A NOTICE OF THIS EPISODE!!! I bought a bottle of Henry McKenna instead, so you saved my life.
A wonderfully goooooolish vid y’all! Haven’t had any of those 4 myself, so thanks for the input. Out of those 4 though, the Redemption seems to be the most intriguing by way of your descriptions. May someday pick up a bottle to try. Happy Halloween and enjoy every sip!
My local is Rock Town, I've tried several of theirs and don't see where the good reviews are coming from, so thanks for your honesty. They can't all be great and the distillers need to know that about what they are putting in the bottle.
To be honest, I have never heard of any of these bourbons before. Perhaps you can chalk that up to me living in Colorado as well, but pretty sure I've never seen any of these on a shelf out here before.
I just wanted to drop a line and tell you guys that I really enjoy watching your videos. Y'all are great! And I'm on board about the Town Branch. Ugh! And it's sad, because a couple years ago, it was pretty good.
After watching you guys and a few other channels like Whiskey Vault I decided to try Buffalo trace and really liked it and finished it and today I bought The Dalmore 12Yr and Larceny and WOW what a big difference in taste and nose. The Dalmore 12yr and Larceny have a similar taste to me and super smooth but what do I know I'm still learning. I'm really enjoying trying out different stuff. I was never really much of a whisky/bourbon drinker until now. I plan on getting Hibiki Harmony and Yamazaki 12yr next time.
GreenLit the blantons ones are much better (although more expensive) than standard Buffalo trace. Rather going with Wild Turkey, didnt like the standard Buffalo trace.
Its called MurLarkey Distilled Spirits. Just a little outfit here in Northern Virginia. Havent really had anything I care for from them. They have this idea that infusing flavor into spirits is a good idea, and its executed poorly.
I haven't had any of those four except for Corner Creek, and when it first came out in the low $20, I thought it was a very good bourbon for the money.
Home Alone reference is a gem in this video. How much is that facepaint affecting the nose for Sara though? (Full disclosure, I am Scottish and have tried none of these bourbons but damnit I'm a scientist and need to know).
It's Bourbon Night , I respectfully disagree, but that's OK. How will she know that a boomstick isn't a dirty reference though if she doesn't watch it.
Freddie Slaughter Right now we are releasing a new episode every Friday. This episode might be a Flight Fight, a Uncorking, a Bourbon Night episode or something else from our topic catch all playlist called The Bar Mat. We would like to increase this to twice a week in the future, if we can. We haven't implemented a number rating scale for our Uncorking episodes, but we may explore that. Right now we either recommend you buy a bottle, buy a taste at a bar, or don't bother with either, depending on the bourbon or rye we are tasting.
I'm with you. Town Branch is terrible. It's so thin and watered down. It's like the Bud Light of bourbon. If you like this, buy Kentucky Tavern. It's alot cheaper and also lacks flavor.
I came across this video while searching for a way to improve a bourbon at home. Bourbon in question? Town Branch. It is the worst bourbon I have had. That being said, I enjoy some cheaper bourbon; Evan Williams Black Label, Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, etc. I figured I couldn’t lose buying a bourbon from Lexington. I was wrong. I paid $35 for it and can’t dump it. I am currently trying some bourbon aging sticks. After three days, not much improvement. I’ve added water, and a splash of Old Forester. It is now going through another three days with a new bourbon stick. I am determined to make this drinkable.
I don't know if y'all watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (if not, you should!) but Sara, you look like Maureen Ponderosa when she was transitioning to full cat! Hahaha! Anyhow, we (me and the hubs) love your videos!
Not to be weird but your guy's "vibe" so to speak really threw me off at first for some reason, but has come to grow on me. I love the weirdness that other whiskey channels don't bring. thanks yal
Mittencamper Nah, she was just having allergies. She's allergic to cats. ;) But seriously, we were both looking forward to doing this episode, as unpleasant as it was.
I'll tell ya the best bourbon for $13 I'm able to still get here locally in Socal (for now at my shop until they're out anyway). And that would be.............*drum role*........................can ya guess? Get ready to smack your forehead!..........YES!!!!!! It's WT 101!!!! Pre 2015 bottles!!! Best bourbon cheap money can buy!!! 8D
Older doesn't always mean better. In fact, some bourbons can age past their sweet spot and start to degrade in taste. Of course, this is all subjective to your taste profile. Generally, I think it's safe to safe that the majority of bourbon drinkers find that bourbon is better when it has aged at least four years. There's always exceptions, of course, but the more time the bourbon spends in the barrel, the more time it can interact with the wood, making the bourbon darker, smoother and giving it more influences of the barrel.
Wait, I just re-read your comment and think I might have gone a different direction in my answer. Were you asking what makes a 2015 bottle better than the one of the shelf today? If so, the answer is also...maybe nothing! Sometimes, though, the older bottlings, like even older that 2015, represent a time before the Bourbon Boom, back when bourbon wasn't selling all that well. You had a better chance back then of a much older bourbon getting blended into the mix. So in this example with Wild Turkey 101, it could have some 8 year, some 10 or 12 year and maybe even some older juice blended in, which some people find more enticing than today's climate where they don't have that luxury.
What makes the older bottles "better" ya mean? ;] Wellp........besides the price I pay for them, nothing! I find that the last edition "little turkey" bottles (2015 and before) have a considerably different flavor profile from the newest "big turkey" edition bottles. I really like the flavor profile of the previous edition bottles (little turkey). However.......I think the juice in those bottles is actually YOUNGER than the juice in the newer big turkey bottles. Because if ya compare the two juices side by side, the newer stuff is ever so slightly darker! And the rye DEFINITELY stands out more in the newer WT juice and it's slightly sweeter than the 2015 and before juice! Basically I think the juice in the big turkey bottles is a lot more savory with rye and a tad sweeter, while the juice in the little turkey bottles is a little more leathery, a little less rye flavor (but same kick or maybe a tad more kick than big turkey bottles!) and a tad less sweet! It seems as if WT went the OPPOSITE of watering down juice as time went on even with the boom n all..............because the price did nearly double from $12 to around $21-$22 (here in SoCal) within the last few years or so.........and the only way I could see the Russells DOUBLING the price of WT 101 (for how cheap it has always sold) besides the boom........was to put slightly older bourbons in the new bottles! And.......if this is actually true I don't think any other bourbon distiller has done this and ever would do this (why would they...they're not the Russells!). Could be wrong about all this............get a bottle of little turkey 101 if ya can along with a new big turkey bottle and compare the two juices! It's great to share bourbon knowledge and experience! 8}}}
