What really bugs me when people try and compare 4s and 6s is their setups are very rarely comparable. Yes, there are lots of efficiency gains by going to 6s, but make the comparisons fair. They would be a lot closer if the setups were more comparable. The 6s setup Steele is using is comparable to a 1650mah 4s battery and 2550kv motors, so of course it's going to be more powerful and last longer. If it were a direct comparison between 4s and 6s he should have used approximately an 866mah 6s with 1563kv motors.

So I did try lower KV. Actually 1600 to be exact. And I found that the efficiency was essentially the same. Same flight times as 1700kv. But not the same top end extra power or the extra speed. For what I do both were fine but I preferred staying in the lower throttle range. And using the top end power in moments when I’ve wished I had more. Like chasing down cars or extreme sports athletes. Also. With a hero 6 and the added weight. The 1700s made it feel like you were running a Gopro at all

Hate to be the one to say it and maybe you say it yourself (still watching the vid).... but.... your 6s pack has way more watt hours than your 4s pack, hense the much longer flight time. 1500mah 4s compares close to 1050mah 6s

Power =. V x A. Raising V means lower A for a given power usage. Lower A results in your capacity lasting longer.

Question: You said the lower throtle resolution is worse with the 6s... isnt it possible to limit the throtle or change the mode to a different throttle curve to compensate for that?

Your reasoning for holding out on on 6s until now are the same reasons why I don't go out and always buy the first generation of new products that everybody a lot of times rave about. I always wait until the products are proven to work and work well and consistently. I hate throwing away money on unproven technology.

6s definitely just has some more balls, bigger punch and recovers closer to the ground. I still dont see the difference in a freestyle performance though overall, a 4s can still do anything a 6s can do and maybe even a little bit better. Now, as far as racing goes, I can see why people dont care about an extra 10 or 12 grams for a 6s battery, especially for a qualifying run...

More flight time is not true and you probably know it, so wth? In order to do a fair comparison the 6s battery needed to be 850 mAh (19,2 Wh). Of course you get more flight time with ~30% more capacity. Only Pro's of the 6s are less sag and less weight of the battery. The cons are obvious...

Why does 5s get skipped over? Lol I just bought some pyrodrone 5s packs 1250mah , 25 bucks. 175 grams. Get more power longer run time on those too, just not as dramatic as with 6s. Also I don’t have to change my hardware as much.

I usually get 4-5 minutes on 4s. Not sure I’m gonna switch yet only because all my rigs are 4s. I’ll probably start moving to 6s over time although I’m in no rush. Thanks for all your awesomeness Steele. Happy flying

Love your videos, it was your " why fly 800mw " video that inspired me to go build my own drone and learn to fly but, to be fair in this video I dont feel that as far as battery life is concerned this was a fair comparison between 4s and 6s, you were very clearly pushing the 4s harder then the 6s but I'm sure its difficult to be exact.

agree - 6s flight was like nothing compare to 4s. Actually amp draw was same on similar moves like circling around an object, forward flight. The only difference I saw was max current being lower on 6s during punch outs about 20% lower , but that won't give longer flight time by that much on its own

MC's Creations I can mathematically agree with you on this, but I'd have to say there seems to be something with lower amp draw and lower heat? making these seem more effecient? And with real world experience I 100% notice little to no sag on my 6s setup compared to my 4s even with matched watt hours. Which is why I personally run 6s instead of 4s now.

and let's not forget that 6s lipos don't heat up and puff as easily, which typically means they will have a longer lifespan too. 6s are a little more expensive, but worth it in my opinion.

DeCorK It could be less amps (current), but there's more volts (voltage). Power is current * voltage, in watts... So it's going to heat the same way. There's a nichrome calculator online where you can play with the values and see how to get some temperature, for example. You can use it to, in some limit, have an idea. 😊

droneXcursion If you use a bigger 4s battery it's going to be the same. Or a smaller 6s it's going to sag a lot too... Or even if you force your 6s, trying to fly for more time. The first video Joshua Bardwell did about that the guy said exactly that. And in the last he did about it he concluded that there's absolutely no difference.

The biggest issue with 6s tho is most people want the extra high end speed, you’ve flown two setups which almost deliver the same end result, smoothness/efficiency whilst maintaining your style of flying. You know most the noobs gonna get 6s smack some high kv motors on and fuck pack after pack because they spend 4 mins full throttle 😂😂😂😂😂

The watt/hr is what it is. Do you want to do it with voltage or current? There is (virtually)no penalty for voltage but there is a bell curve penalty for current. I suppose someone could suggest higher efficiency is a problem if the user is used to lower efficiency. Someone could prolly install a 500lb weight in their vehicle after upgrading a stock turbo to a modern aluminum compressor wheel turbo with an anti-surge inlet port cover to make it feel like the stock cast wheel because is doesn't feel as laggy as the original or they thought high rpm boost drop was actually a problem....but we got over that 15 years ago. Quads today are like drag cars were in the early 2000's. So much confusion over basic physics.People used to think boost pressure made horsepower. The smart guys selected the proper components so they never had to open the wastegate.

Best video imo covering the 6s topic by now. and i hate your facts. i have so many 2300 & 2600kv setups and 4s esc. what should i do with them now? just kidding ;) i personally ride the ultrlight/featherlight train the last couple months. AUWs under 450g incl. Session4 running 4s 1000 - 1300mah packs and 2205 on a light prop. 3-6min of energetic flight and also less voltage sag throughout the pack. I also discovered much lower damage on crashes due to lower forces on impact. The flight feel is not for everyone, i have been told... i like it. it is so different and responsive. and a new dimension of tightness. perhaps you already had the chance, if not, i highly recommend to give it a shot. thanks for all your effort. i love your van and all the craftswork you invested. keep on going!!

HHaha :). Thank you so much man yup lower the weight less damage. For sure. With a freestyle rig it’s a sweet spot. For me between 550-600g is the sweet spot. Any heavier and shit breaks and lighter and it doesn’t huck as nicely

Thats nothing to do with 6S vs 4S setup, his 6s rig is just way more powerfull with that kv than his 4S setup.

I suppose he could have calculated and stepped down the kv (1300-1400ish maybe?) to have made it have the same amount of thrust as his 4S setup? Either way, point taken.

It has everything to do with higher voltage. The more voltage and lower KV you have the more torque you have. Equaling more yaw authority..

Throttle resolution has only to do with his KV choice. Steele motors are at 2350KV and the 6s setup is 2550KV theoretically. May be as high as 2650... needs to be tested. Anyway, the lower the KV the more the resolution. You could also compensate by adjusting the max throttle in your flight software or radio by 10%. Problem solved.

14.8*2345=34706rpm 22.2*1700=37740rpm That's why you loose resolution. N48 on 14.8v vs N52 on 22.2v is huge different. 19.2Wh vs 24.4Wh is again huge different. 1300mah with 100C is 130Amp 130Amp * 14.8v is 1920watt 1100mah with 100C is 110Amp 110Amp * 22.2v is 2440watt 1650mah 100c can give you the same 2440watt! Just take 2550kv N52 motor on 4s 1650mah 100c and you give the same power, but not constat as on 6s. From 4.2 to 3.7 per cell 6s 1700kv 42840rpm to 37740rpm 4s 2345kv 39396rpm to 34706rpm

I keep seeing this lately but nobody explains why and its super simple, one of the most basic electrical calculations. P(watts) = I(Current/Amps) * V. I don't presume to preach to anyone who already knows this, just listing it for others who may not and want to understand it. So many components are measured in amps on drones I think it's overlooked that really, it's power that flys the drone, and that's constant for a given drone. If your flying style on a given 3" for example draws on average 300W, it will always draw 300W (unless you change something like add weight or change props!). This means there will be less amp draw and batteries are measured in how long they will last on a certain amp draw (mah!). So for example: 300W = 14.8V * 20.27A 300W = 22.2V * 13.51A Just about half the amp draw, so just about twice the time as shown in the video! This is also why there is less "sag" at the end of the pack. Since you have ~21V at the "end" of a 6s vs ~14.5V at the end of a 4S, you can maintain power with less A draw, squeak more P out of the mah left in the battery.

Mr Steele how much energy you have in the battery = amps x volts. The 6S has more watts, therefore it's bigger and you would expect more flight time. 1100mA 6S = 1650mA 4S. If you matched the watts you would be comparing apples with apples...

@@bandobandit353, another way to say this is by converting to watt-hours. the 6s that he used is 27.72 watt-hours, and the 4s is only 21.84 watt-hours. a 4s on 1650mah will get you the same amount of watt-hours as a 1100mah 6s. another way of putting this is saying that you would need an 850mah 6s to match the watt-hours of a 1300 4s. sorry Mr.Steele, I generally am a fan of your content, but I just had to take bando's side on this one.

wow can these lipos pull this high current ? up to 100A ! that's really impressive. But of course pulling this much shouldn't take time more than couple seconds. But in case of li-ion battery packs, how much I can pull from it in case if we say a 6S li-ion pack?

Hard to rate it as from the mathematical point of view it doesn't make so much sense as from practical. Torque depends on amps draw and kv. Lower kv - the higher Nm/A torque constant is. And when you draw the same current as on 4S, also because the motors are so different, then ofc it will generate more torque. You drain 81% of 4S mAh capacity and 89% from 6S one. Tunability differs only because different kv, overall quad power and weight. Also i don't know why throttle resolution is here, as you said it by yourself, it's from kv. It is also worth nothing that due to these voltage spikes, the hardware will probably fail easier, as many components get microdamages from exceeding their rating. With time they'll tend to damage completely and cause shorts - typical for MLCC capacitors. On some ESCs caps seem to be impossible for the specs, like for example those 1800uF for 18x ceramic caps and 6S rated - caps like these don't exist at all in this world. This is a comparison between 2 different setups, not really between 2 different battery voltages. Many things are not comparable here, but if it is all about the technology - I mean it's impossible to get the same results from 4S rig and 6S batteries are so capable within their weight - then i'm totally ok with it, didn't test it by myself, must be something about it.

Interesting stats. Lower max amps on 6S cuz Ohm said so. Lower temp on 6S as well, probably also due to the lower current. Thanks for the video.

Hello Sir I'm still learning and because of the shortage of stuff, and of course, crashes. I'm sat here droneless. with CPL long-range 4 inches on route a diatone 3 inch and an i flight 4s 5 inch.:) Soon I will have many qwads to crash, point is there all four s. Also I'm looking to get your build .However i didnt know you did a 4s version or that was what you always had. As you said a 4s would be good for beginners (also might get someone else to build it as I'm still learning to solder properly). Question is would it be very hard to upgade the steele 4s rig to 6s if I became awesome and could handle more power? Thanks man

I tryed 5s on my mr steele quad build by flitetest and i like it so much that i order one more pair of rebel 5s high-C for my quad.

4s or 6s? #firstworldproblems In all reality and real talk though, I like seeing the two side by side. 6s is beast, compared to 4s. That price tag tho... planning on buying your stout motors, Steele, just gotta get the cash together.

im prettty sure the higher voltage and capacitors are correcting your power factor. I.E. ohms law: higher volts = lower amps and better utilization of circuits... among circuit stability and a Big F*****g Battery.

I would rather try to lose some weight and gain some power instead of improving the flight time. However the issue seems to be that most 6S lipos have minimum 1300mAh which makes them very fat. The manufacturers have to produce smaller sizes for higher voltage lipos. They seem to just put some more cells on top for of the few people that want to use higher voltage. They really have to shrink the size and weight by Reducing mAh. Give us smaller cells please!

30% increase in watt hours between the packs doesn’t equal a 100% increase in flight time. The 4S quad would have to be burning off all that extra power in heat for it to make that much difference but nothing is getting that hot?!

If the new 25amp 4-in-1 is able to handle 6s, one can assume that the single 25amp esc's can also? With respect to their amp limitations of course. This would be good to hear.

Can I be a little picky about the flight footage? The DVR was a little transparent, fooling me into thinking there was a cut in the 4S footage. I also heard some talking, maybe from the stick cam.

Interesting comparison. - Side note, throttle expo can be used to decrease the steepness of the throttle curve around the hover/cruise point. The throttle-to-lift relationship is not linear to begin with.

4S feels better to you than 6S using Kiss. What about other flight software? Could it possibly also change behavior with highter voltage, just for the better and not worse.

I don't run because in my country 6s simply is not viable. The prices are a lot greater than 4s and you can't find it anywhere. Really sad.

The 6S LIPO has slightly more WH so obviously it will fly longer... Try to match the WH on both setup and give it another shot!

That's the point, for close to the same weight, you get longer flight time and more power at the same time, plus less amp draw.

You never mentioned the worse con to 6s is an extra 30% chance of a single cell failured and the inherent higher chance of cell rupture because they are wider and thinner more fragile cells.

Great explanation Steele. Been flying on 6s for a while & agree it does take some adjustment to get used to the decreased resolution + you definitely need the Low ESR Caps. I'm particularly liking 6s on my long-range 7" setups too. :)

What volt 470 caps are you using for 6s? Do you have to use caps on all 6s rigs? Even on betaflight?

Aren't 35V caps not enough for 6s? The Kiss ESC Manual says to use 50V (330 uF) low esr capacitors for 6s - why did you go with 35V? Any issues or benefits vs. 50V? See p1 and graphic on p3 of manual here: kiss.flyduino.net/download/kiss-esc32a-manual-english/#. Love your kwad!

You should have compared with 4s 1650mah....1300mha are bad anyway, you have to compare the same embarqued power. I have tryed 1800mah 4s, and results are Amazing!!!

That is AUW. as is All Up Weight. With everything as it was flying in the video. And all the time. Yes that includes Gopro and the battery.

Man perfect timing, I have been wondering about this myself. My motors are getting worn out and half my 4S packs are dying. I get 4-5 min on my 490g AUW w/1500 lipo no GoPro rig. I can get 7min when just super slow cruising. All my gear is 6S rated sow swapping motors and packs can certainly double my flight times. I really like your slow methodical pace in gear choice. Master what you have if you have good components and don't jump on the bandwagon too soon.
