We have a saying like that in India about falling from trees (often coconut trees) to describe people who forget contexts of situations. Maybe Kamala's Indian parent has said that thinking of it.

Harris literally started the sentence with "my mother used to say". And yes, her mother was Indian. If they bothered to listen to 10 seconds of the clip she clearly said we all come from somewhere/someone that has an impact on who we are, we don't just fall out of coconut trees.

If they bothered to listen to 10 seconds of the clip she clearly explains we all come from somewhere/someone, we don't just fall out of trees. Coconut because that is what is common in India. If it were an American saying it would be an apple tree e.g. the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I can't imagine why you would twist your brain to come up with a way to make it racist.

@@LadyChem half my family is Hispanic I’m not imagining anything I have experienced culture. It’s a pretty well known racial joke. It was poorly made and I did listen to the entire speech when it was made (it isn’t recent) when you travel, and you have a multi ethnic family you find out new things about the world and the culture. Unfortunately many people don’t have that experience though they fight and argue with strangers as if they did. My brother has been the victim of this slur as I have had more experience in Hispanic culture than he has although he is visibly Hispanic and I am not when I know more about how to cook and speak and be more culturally relevant they call him a coconut. So does the eastern Indian community. I’m not imagining actual life experience

One suggestion is if you don’t believe me travel to a Hispanic city (I have a feeling you probably may not live near one) and try calling a brown person a coconut and see what happens next. Social experiment your theory of imaginary racism

The saying existed in India long before people started using coconut as a slur. Words still have real meanings and if you actually listened to her she explained exactly what she meant.
